文部科学省は新英語学習指導要領で「英語を使ってできること」（=CAN-DO）を意識した学習到達目標の設定を行っているが、実際に教育現場で活用して効果的な言語活動を行うためには，CAN-DOと連携した語彙・文法を例文レベルまで具体化することが重要である。CEFRが示すような習熟度段階と言語タスクに適合したインプットの基となる例文を提示するためには，例文の特性・条件とその難易度調整に必要な客観的指標を特定することが肝要である。既存の学習材の例文は実際に用例が対象ユーザーに提供するインプットとして最適な難易度に調整されているという客観的な保証や基準がない。そのため、様々な学習材で良質な用例提供をする上で重要な研究である。
2020年度は、方法論的問題点の改善を行い、より詳細な既存の学習材を対象に行ったCEFRレベル別例文の特徴分析を行った。海外のCEFR準拠教科書からランダム抽出した各例文に(a) 語彙難易度, (b)統語的複雑度などの情報を付与し、各CEFRレベルで提供される文の特徴の探索とランダムフォレストを用いたCEFRレベル分類の精度を調査した。また、学習者の例文使用から例文の使用の正確さに影響しうる例文の特徴の探索を行った。例文の質や難易度に関する研究は、海外では辞書編纂との関連で論じられるものが多いため、辞書学的な視点からユーザー研究を行った。問題セットごとに，条件因子（用例の形式, 用例の長さ, ターゲットとなる語・形式の出現位置）を制御した用例群を熟達度レベルが異なる学習者に与え，異なる要因を含んだ用例からの情報抽出の正確さと用例から抽出した情報の和文英訳課題の中での適切な使用、の二点に着目して分析した。方法論的限界が残るため、研究デザインを練り直し、難易度調整による効果検証をより綿密に大規模に行うことが今後の課題である。
