The cone-convex hull by complement (ccc-hull) is a generalized convex hull created from Poincare Cones. We propose a new approach with the ccc-hull for the simulation of the extent of damage by a tsunami, and simulate the damaged area at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake for approximate damage by samples from a two-dimensional Non-homogeneous Poisson Process. Then, we consider the problem of the estimation of the parameter rho, which corresponds to the opening angle of the Poincare Cones. We believe our suggestion can be used to predict the extent of a tsunami in a specified area in Japan.

We aim at improving the accuracy of indoor position estimation through a statistical approach. In this study, we propose a position estimation method based on Time-of-Arrival (ToA). ToA data are often useful. However, ToA data include a positive bias due to the reflection of radio waves. Therefore, it is difficult to estimate the TAG position from ToA data directly without an accurate bias correction. In this paper, we propose a maximum likelihood estimation method for the TAG position using gamma regression and a rotated distribution, and we show that the estimation with bias correction is more accurate than the estimation without bias correction. In addition, we show that our method also provides a confidence region for the TAG position.

In this study, we consider a process where states 0 and 1 appear alternately. Rootzén & Zholud (2016) developed methods to estimate the parameters of the distribution of length of 0-interval in the alternating renewal process. Abe & Kamakura (2016) derived the likelihood function corresponding to window censored alternating renewal process. Such a 0-1 process has been observed in the observation window. The specific events can only be observed in this window. When the event does not occur until the window end, the right censoring can be observed. The left censored observation is defined when the event occurs at the left end of the window.<br> Rootzén & Zholud (2016) only focused on the distribution of length of state 0 and discussed this problem based on the conditional likelihood. Abe & Kamakura (2016) proposed joint estimators of parameters of the distribution of length of state 1 and 0 based on the maximum likelihood. For a short observation window, Rootzén & Zholud (2016) suggested that the joint parameter estimation of the distribution of length of states 0 and 1 is preferable. However, there are no theoretical considerations or numerical comparisons performed in this regard. In this article, we investigate the properties of theses parameters, which specify the distribution of the two-state length. When the length has an exponential distribution, we can derive the asymptotic relative efficiency of our estimator to the estimator proposed by Rootzén & Zholud (2016). Even though the distribution of lengths of states 0 and 1 is independent, the joint estimation approach yields better performance. In the case of Weibull and exponential distributions we illustrate usefulness of the unconditional method (Abe & Kamakura, 2016) via simulations. As an example of application, we analyze the heat seal data observed by a microscope.

We proposed a modified non-overlapping template matching test and a method for specifying a pattern that appears too many times, in Takeda et al. (2014). The method that we proposed was effective for the most part, but had some difficulties. Our new contribution in this paper is to propose an improved method of identifying a pattern that appears too many times, in the non-overlapping template matching test for resolving these difficulties and to show how this identification test works effectively by some simulation studies.

An alternating renewal process is used as modeling of various phenomena, such as two state system machine that periodically fails and repair. The reliability engineering the availability of system is of interest. That is defined by a probability that a system is on at any given time t. On-times and off-times appear alternately. We can sometimes obtain only partial observations through the limited observation windows. Only in this window we can observe the occurrence the specified events. In this article we propose a new estimation procedure for an availability parameter based on the window-censored observations. We derive the likelihood function corresponding to the window-censoring mechanism. In the case of Weibull distribution we show the usefulness of the proposed method. When the shape parameter is equal to one which is corresponding, the simple estimator (the ratio of total on-times to window size) that is easy calculated, is can be used practically. ML estimation has a good performance in other shape parameter values.

We study the problem of analyzing and classifying frontal view gait video data. In this study, we focus on the shape scale changing in the frontal view human gait, we estimate scale parameters using the statistical registration and modeling on a video data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we apply our model to young and elderly, normal and pathological gait analysis. As a result, our model shows good performance for the scale estimation and gait analysis.

We study the problem of analyzing indoor location estimation by statistical radial distribution model. In this study, we suppose the observed distance data between transmitter and receiver as a radial log-normal distribution. We estimate the subject's location using marginal likelihoods of radial log-normal distribution. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conducted two sets of experiments, assessing the accuracy of location estimation of static case and dynamic case. In static experiment, subject is stationary state in some places in the chamber. This experiment is able to measure the precise performance of proposed method. In dynamic experiment, subject is move around in the chamber. This experiment is able to measure the suitability for practical use of proposed method. As a result, our method shows high accuracy for the static case indoor spatial location estimation.

The extended cumulative exposure model (ECEM) includes features of the cumulative exposure model (CEM) and the memoryless model (MM). These often used to express the failure probability model in step-stress accelerated life test (SSALT). The CEM is widely accepted in reliability fields because accumulation of fatigue is considered to be reasonable. The MM is also used in electrical engineering because accumulation of fatigue is not observed in some cases. The ECEM includes features of both models. However, this model is sometimes difficult to estimate their parameters. We propose here a modulated ECEM model based on the time-scale. A simulation study supports the applicability of the proposed model.

We will derive the LM test statistic for the conditional von Mises distribution for detecting non-uniformity of line segments spread on the two dimensional plane, which has relatively high performance even for small samples as the extension of V-test to half circle. We illuminate the performance of this test by conducting simulation studies and also apply to Japanese active faults. Finally, we will propose a new non-hierarchical clustering method based on angular dispersions.

We present the design of recommendation system for real-estate e-commerce site based on the co-occurrence relation analysis of search criterion. A study on design of recommendation system is very important role in the field of e-commerce business. In this paper, We focus on the search criterion in the e-commerce site. Rukhin et al. (2010) proposed the non-overlapping template matching test as one of methods for statistical testing of randomness in cryptographic applications. This test is the very interesting, but statistical properties of this test and any methods on setting the template have not been shown. Our new contribution in this paper is to propose a modified version of this test including the setting of the template and to show how this modified test works effectively by some simulation studies.

For the three-parameter gamma distribution, it is known that the method of moments as well as the maximum likelihood method have difficulties such as non-existence in some range of the parameters, convergence problems, and large variability. For this reason, in this article, we propose a method of estimation based on a transformation involving order statistics from the sample. In this method, the estimates always exist uniquely over the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. The bias and mean squared error of the estimators are also examined by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study, and the empirical results show the small-sample superiority in addition to the desirable large sample properties.

We study the problem of web site classification for purchase or non-purchase customer estimation. A study on data mining of web site access log data is very important role in the field of e-commerce and web site design. In this study, we focus on the customer's behavior in the e-commerce web site. Firstly, we detect the difference between purchase and non-purchase customer's behavior based on the graph model. Secondly, we reconstruct the web site classification based on the graph model's result. Finally, we estimate the purchase or non-purchase customer's behavior using HMM by the reconstructed web site classification. As a result, our classification method shows better performance than other method.

A study on the healthcare application is very important for the solitary death in aging society. Many previous works had been proposed a detection method of aspiration using the non-contact radar. But the works are only in subjects with sitting in a chair. We consider that user falls down in the state when he happen abnormal situation as daily life. In this study, we focus on the detection of "aspiration" or "apnea" for the lying position, because the final decision of the life or death is aspiration. As initial stage of the system, we propose the recognition method for the presence of aspiration with lying position under the low-disturbance environment from microwave Doppler signals by using support vector machine (SVM). © 2014 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

We study the problem of analyzing and classifying frontal view gait video data. The video data filmed from the frontal view is difficult to analyze, because the subject getting close in to the camera, and data includes the scale-changing parameters (Barnich and Droogenbroeck 2009, Lee et al. 2008). To cope with this, Okusa et al. (2011) and Okusa & Kamakura (2012) proposed a registration for scales of moving object using the method of nonlinear least squares, but Okusa et al. (2011) and Okusa & Kamakura (2012) did not focus on the human leg swing. Okusa & Kamakura (2013c) focus on the gait analysis using arm and leg swing model with estimated parameters and application to the normal/abnormal gait analysis. However, their models have many of parameters, and it raise calculation cost and instability of parameter estimation. Okusa & Kamakura (2013a) focus on the calculation cost and parameter estimation stability. The performance of Okusa & Kamakura (2013a) model is able to speed up the parameter estimation. However, the problem of parameter estimation stability still remains to be solved. Okusa & Kamakura (2013b) proposed simplified gait model based on the Okusa & Kamakura (2013a)'s model, it settled stability of parameter estimation. In this article, we focus on the behavior of Okusa & Kamakura (2013b) model's parameters. We validate the Okusa & Kamakura (2013b)'s model from the stand point of stability of the parameter estimation based on the numerical simulation. As a result, Okusa & Kamakura (2013b)'s gait model is stable to estimate the arm swim amplitude, subjects walking speed, gait frequency. However, on the other hand, this model is difficult to estimate the phase parameters. This result indicates Okusa & Kamakura (2013b) model is difficult to apply for the frontal view gait authentication.

In this paper, we propose a new method for the estimation of parameters of the three-parameter Weibull distribution. The method is based on a data transformation, which avoids the problem of unbounded likelihood. In the proposed method, under mild conditions, the estimates always exist uniquely in the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we further show that the proposed method performs better than some existing methods in terms of bias and root mean squared error (RMSE). Finally, two examples based on real data sets are presented to illustrate the proposed method. © 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Although a Doppler radar detects the respiratory motion in the non-contact way, there is a problem of the performance decrement in proportion to the distance between a radar and a human body due to the reduction of the reflected rate. A model-based method is proposed to evaluate the respiratory presence in such cases. This model expresses the chest-wall displacement. The expression is composed of the periodic function which has five parameters. This model has a new property that the inspiration and the expiration are given by each of the two independent parameters. Therefore the problem is solved by tracking the radar outputs using the particle filter framework. The experiment was carried out to the six subjects at the distance 3.25m. The result showed that there was the statistically significant difference between the evaluation value of the unattended state and that of the attended one. In addition, the estimated model was favorably compared with the reference data which was measured by the high-precision displacement sensor. Consequently, the efficacy of the proposed method for the long distance (>3.00m) and that of the proposed respiratory model are established.

We study the problem of analyzing and classifying frontal view gait video data. In this study, we suppose that frontal view gait data as a mixing of scale changing, human movements and speed changing parameters. We estimate these parameters using the statistical registration and modeling on a video data. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conducted experiment, assessing the proposed method for frontal view human gait authentication. We apply K-nearest-neighbor classifier, using the estimated parameters, to perform the human gait authentication, and present results from an experiment involving 120 subjects. As a result, our method shows high recognition rate and low calculation cost.

We study the problems of the structure model and speed parameter estimation for scales of moving object on the video data with application to gait analysis. A study on the human gait is important in the fields of the biometrics study and the sports/health managements for planning optimal trainings. The motion capture system can give the precise measurements of trajectories of moving objects, but it requires the laboratory environments and this cannot be used in the field study. On the other hand, the video camera is handy to observe the gait motion in the field study, but such data has many restrictions on analysis based on the filming conditions. In particular, the video data filmed from the frontal-view is difficult to analyze, because the subject getting closer to the camera, and observed data includes the scale-changing parameters. To cope with this, Okusa et al. (2010) proposed a registration algorithm for scales of moving object using the method of nonlinear least squares with application to the gait analysis assuming constant speed. In this article, focusing on the human gait cycles and speeds, we consider the human gait modeling based on simple gait structure. We estimate the parameters of the human gait cycles and speeds using the method of nonlinear least squares (Okusa et al., 2010). We also show that estimated parameters may be used for the human gait analysis.

Recently, the study with microwave Doppler radar is paid attention to. Microwave Doppler radar is one of the non-contact sensor, and detects the action of objects. The study focused on indoor human behavior has been developed. However, disturbance environment that pet and electronic device are moving in the room is considered in real daily life. We considered that an oscillating electric fan is most difficult disturbance environment to discriminate from human breathing, because the frequency range of which each signature appears is similar. In this paper, we propose a method to simulate the moving of an oscillating electric fan based on the data obtained from microwave Doppler radar. Finally, we evaluate the modelization of the moving of an oscillating electric fan. We compare computer simulation with metering experiment by residual sum of squares. As a result, our model shows good performance.

Using a Doppler radar as a motion sensor is promising for monitoring human daily activities. Various detection algorithms for human activities and vital signs have been proposed
however, most require a controlled environment and do not allow for the presence of moving objects in the sensing area. In actuality, motor-actuated appliances such as electric fans and heaters are often noise sources in homes. The velocities of such appliances overlap with those of a person and can cause a Doppler effect even without human presence. We resolve this issue in the current study by analyzing motion regularity. To detect the irregular motions that characterize a person's presence, we utilize the prediction errors from an autoregressive model. A performance evaluation of the proposed algorithm shows that high accuracy is achieved for human detection under disturbances caused by electric appliance motions. Moreover, our method outperforms the conventional frequency-based method that uses power spectra of the Doppler signal. © 2012 IEEE.

Doppler radar can detect an object movement from a change of ratio reflection. In many cases, a radar with a single receiver could receive multiple reflections as a single mixed signal because of a variety of moving objects. Therefore, the source separation techniques are required to detect each object. In this paper, we extract the features from a mixed radar signal composed of two different period using Fourier analysis and independent component analysis (ICA). Then, we recognize the number of signal sources by using support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Performance evaluation results show that our approach can achieve a detection accuracy of 96.2%.

We study the problem of analyzing and classifying frontal view gait video data. In this study, we suppose that frontal view gait data as a mixing of scale changing, human movements and speed changing parameters. We estimate these parameters using the statistical registration and modeling on a video data. Our gait model is based on human gait structure and temporal-spatial relations between camera and subject. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conducted two sets of experiments, assessing the proposed method in gait analysis for young/elderly person and abnormal gait detection. In abnormal gait detection experiment, we apply K-nearest neighbor classifier, using the estimated parameters, to perform normal/abnormal gait detect, and present results from an experiment involving 120 subjects (young person), and 60 subjects (elderly person). As a result, our method shows high detection rate.

A study on the healthcare application is very important for the solitary death in aging society. Many previous works had been proposed a detection method of aspiration using the non -contact radar. But the works are only in subjects with sitting in a chair. We consider that user falls down in the state when he happen abnormal situation as daily life.
In this study, we focus on the detection of "aspiration" or "apnea" for the lying position, because the final decision of the life or death is aspiration. As initial stage of the system, we propose the recognition method for the presence of aspiration with lying position under the low-disturbance environment from microwave Doppler signals by using support vector machine (SVM).

Recently, a study which recognize human activity by acceleration and angular speed sensor have been actively done. Service deployment of these studies expands medical, sport, security and variable fields. In recognizing human activity, suport vector machine(SVM) is considered as one of best learning machine in many one which is known now, because SVM has high recognition accuracy and needs less computation time. But, SVM has a defect which issues with recognition of the outlier and missing value. Therefore, we focused on Conditional Random Field (CRF) which recognizes the activity while maximizing likelihood of the interval. CRF has been often used in the field such as natural language processing, and the data used in CRF is limited to one-dimensional and categorical data. In this paper, we form an opinion of a method which transfers multidimensional time series data to the data which can be analyzed by CRF and evaluate feature selection.

A study on the human gait is important in the fields of the biometrics study and the sports/health managements for planning optimal trainings. Gait analysis is mainly based on motion capture system and video data. However, from the standpoint of gait recognition, motion capture system is distant idea for biometrics. Video camera based approach is the realistic way. However, video camera is highly visible in the monitoring environment. If the subjects notice the camera system, subjects may change the behavior. In this study, we focusing on the doppler sensor based gait recognition. The purpose of this study is human gait modeling and parameter estimation based on the doppler sensor system.

In recent years, the monitoring system for the elderly are increasing an interest because of the aging society. The non-contact sensors are attracted an attention because the system requires that daily life of user doesn't interfere. Many of these sensors (e.g. infrared sensor, sound sensor, Doppler sensor) has used in the system, especially a microwave Doppler sensor has the advantage against the noise, light and temperature than another sensors. In this paper, as perspective of monitoring for the elderly, we are focusing on the detection of heartbeat and respiration because human state of life or death is finally able to judge. As initial stage of the system, this paper proposes the detection method about the component of respiration and heartbeat under the low-disturbance environment using the microwave Doppler sonsor.

A study on the motion picture plays an important role in the fields of authentication technology and sports managements for planning optimal trainings. However, such works depend on filming situation, and its difficult to analyze frontal view of scale-changing objects. The standard motion analysis software like "Dartfish" cannot handle the objects approaching to the camera. In this case, such software only shows series of picture image and it is hard to get numerical information from them. In this article we propose a statistical methodology that manage to extract information from the scale-changing objects based on the movie data by a consumer video camera and also apply this to real walking data.

We investigate a null distribution of the test statistics when the counting process of recurrent events is modeled as a homogenous Poisson process. We give lower bound and upper bound theoretically and consider to approximate the null distribution by linear combinations of lower bound and upper bound, since it is difficult to derive exact distribution of the test statistics which is a distribution of maximum value of dependent chi-square distributions with 1 degrees of freedom (χ^2_1 distribution) in case of n-recurrent events. The lower bound and the upper bound are given by the distribution of a maximum value of independent n-2 χ^2_1 distributions and χ^2_1 distribution, respectively. Furthermore, we investigate approximation by the empirical distribution since the approximations using the bounds cannot provide good approximation of the null distribution. Our simulation study suggests that the null distribution of the test statistics can be well approximated by gamma distribution corresponding to the number of events over the entire region. The regression formula is also developed to determine the parameters of gamma distribution corresponding to the number of events. Our study shows that the gamma distribution is more appropriate approximation than the approximation using the bounds since it could be possible to keep significant level as a nominal level in the hypothesis testing.

Bayesian estimation of the end point of a distribution is proposed and examined. For this problem, it is well known that the maximum likelihood method does not work well. By modifying the prior density in Hall and Wang (2005) and applying marginal inference, we derive estimators superior to existing ones. The proposed estimators are closely related to the estimating functions which are known to outperform maximum likelihood equations. Another advantage of the proposed method is to resolve the convergence problem. Our simulation results strongly support the superiority of the proposed estimators over the existing ones under the mean squared error. Illustrative examples are also given.

The gamma distribution, having location (threshold), scale and shape parameters, is used as a model for distributions of life spans, reaction time, and for other types of non-symmetrical data. It has been said that the inference for the three-parameter gamma distribution is difficult because of nonregularity in maximum likelihood estimation although numerous papers have appeared over the years. It is usual to avoid fitting the three-parameter gamma distribution and to fit the two-parameter gamma distribution to data in practice. The fitting, however, becomes poor if the threshold exists. In this article, for avoiding this problem, we propose a new estimator of the shape parameter of the gamma distribution, which does not depend on the location parameter. A simulation study shows that the proposed estimator performs better than the Nagatsuka et al. (2006) estimator when the threshold exists even though that is close to zero. The proposed method is also illustrated by an example of a maximum flood level data.

Inference for point processes is more efficient when the exact event occurrence times are known. However, collecting exact times is sometimes difficult due to a study design or practical restrictions. Yet, even then, the grouped number of events, that is, the number of events in intervals of the observation period, is available. Having only the grouped number of recurrent events with time-dependent covariates available, we investigate the precision in estimation of a parameter representing a treatment effect. The study includes only time-dependent covariate which is a function of the cumulative number of recurrent events. The time-dependent covariate is observed at a designated design point and the observation period is divided into two or three intervals. Our results suggest that the lowest bias in estimation of the treatment effect is obtained when the design-point coincides with one of the partition points. High efficiency in parameter estimation is obtained when we take the design-point as the partition point for division of the observation period into two intervals. Additionally, in the case of the division into three intervals, high efficiency is obtained when dividing the first half of the observation period equally into two intervals and setting the design point at the second partition point.

In general, the maximum likelihood method is used to estimate regression parameters in logistic regression model. However, a maximum likelihood estimator does not exist in case of near separation. Furthermore, if the probability of occurring event is extremely small (or large) or the sample size is small compared with the number of regression parameters, a maximum likelihood estimator is not appropriate. In this situation, the exact logistic regression is useful. However, statistical softwares do not always support the exact logistic regression method. Firth (1993) suggested the method to remove bias of a maximum likelihood estimator, but unfortunately, this is not investigated well under near separation. The aim of this paper is to discuss the method to approximate a maximum likelihood estimator or an estimator using Firth's method to an estimator using the exact logistic regression. We also investigate the approximation method with relation to the data structure for improving regression estimates based on simulation study. It is shown that we can approximate a maximum likelihood estimator or an estimator using Firth's method to an estimator using the exact logistic regression. Furthermore, it is possible to improve accuracy of approximation for maximum likelihood estimator if we consider the data structure in the approximation.

Rukhin et al. (2000) proposed 16 methods for statistical testing of randomness for cryptographic applications. We examined some of these methods from statistical point of view. In 16 methods, the autocorrelation test was not included. In this paper, we introduce these 16 methods briefly, point out some problems related to these methods by a practical example and show that the autocorrelation test is also important for cryptographic applications. A modified method for Bayesian image restoration using varying neighborhood structure is proposed. The method reduces computational burden for yielding a restored image due to the dynamical change of structural forms of neighborhood, which should be iteratively and adaptively composed through the process of the restoration calculation. Although, in practice, the results of restoration generally depend on given data, our simulation results show that the method is effective for some given gray-scale images with moderate additive Gaussian noise.

Prescription sequence analysis is based on the observation that a subset of adverse drug reactions are themselves indications for the prescription of another drug. We propose an approach to the analysis of clustering of prescriptions in medication histories that contain records of a presumed side-effect-causing drug A and a side-effect-alleviating drug B. This set of histories with records of both A and B is analysed in a logistic regression model that considers the start of B against exposure and non-exposure of A, stratified on the level of the individual histories. A correction is presented for the periods of B use, during which a new start of B cannot occur. Prescription sequence analysis is demonstrated with a set of histories of use of inhaled steroids (A) and topical oral anticandida drugs (B). A can cause oral candidiasis, B is therapy for this condition. An odds ratio of 1.43 was found for the association of A use and the initiation of therapy with B.

Records on every 6 hour symptom were kept for the period from July 15 through November 30, 1983 by 19, 19 and 26 patients who were outpatients at the Sapporo Civil Hospital, the University of Tokyo Hospital and the University of Ryukyu Hospital. Every 6 hour fluctuations in percentage of asthmatic symptoms were calculated from these records.<br>Meteorological conditions prevailing each city were classified into 9 patterns, i. e., west-high-east-low pattern, north-high pattern, south-high-north-low pattern, east-high-west-low pattern, ridge pattern, trough pattern (east-west), migratory anticyclone pattern, trough pattern (south-north) and tropical depression pattern.<br>An asthma frequency (AF)in days under a certain type of meteorological conditions was compared with that in all the other days. Asthmatic symptoms were more frequent in the days under west-high-east-low pattern and those under migratory anticyclone pattern were also higher. An AF in days under south-high-north-low pattern and that in days under trough pattern (east-west) were lower.<br>Most of days under west-high-east-low pattern were in late autumn in each of the 3 cities. The temperature of the days in Tokyo under this pattern were lower than the control days which belonged to the same period. Days under migratory anticyclone pattern were in the whole period of this study in Sapporo, in autumn in Tokyo and Naha. The temperature of these days in Sapporo and Tokyo was significantly lower than those of the control days.<br>Most of days under south-high-north-low pattern were in summer in each of the 3 cities. The temperature of the days in Tokyo under this pattern was significantly higher than those of the controls. Days under trough pattern (east-west) were from late summer to autumn in Naha. There was no difference in the temperature between the days under this pattern and the control days.<br>In summary, some of meteorological conditions had acute effects on asthma frequencies. When significant differences were observed in the temperature, it was lower (higher) in the days under a meteorological condition, under which the asthma frequency was high (low), than in the control days which belonged to the same period.

In the modified non-overlapping template matching test that we have proposed, we can find some differences in the behaviors of success-ratio among templates. And these differences are caused by the patterns which are embedded. To investigate this cause, we derive the distribution under the null and alternative hypotheses of the number of occurrences of the template.

Human monitoring services are promising for aging society. In this area, falling is considered as high-risk incident for elderly person. It is reported that more than the half of adults 65 and older gets injured. To address this problem, we propose the fall detection method using Radio-type Sensor which provides a nonbinding way to recognize human activity. In this method, acceleration estimated using particle filter with the statistics value summarized from sensor beat signal is used to recognize 3 kinds of human activities include falling.

In reliability engineering, robust methods of estimation and tests play important roles. The MAD (Median Absolute Deviation) is one of the well-known robust estimators of scale. Various papers have appeared over the years dealing with the asymptotic properties of the MAD and these applications. However, surprisingly, the exact distribution of the MAD has never been derived. We then derive the exact distribution of the MAD for any continuous distribution. We furthermore propose a robust test of the equality of two variances using the MAD. Numerical studies are conducted to investigate the properties of the proposed test in terms of robustness.

Efficient methods for parameter estimation of the three-parameter Weibull distribution under censored data have not existed yet. Although it is the Cohen and Whitten's modified maximum likelihood method that is best known, there is information loss in this method, because of including a moment equation. In this paper we propose two methods for parameter estimation of the three-parameter Weibull distribution based on the type-II right censored samples.

The three-parameter gamma distribution, having location (threshold), scale and shape parameters, is frequently used as a model for distributions of life spans, reaction time, and for other types of non-symmetrical data. It is well known that the usual regularity conditions for the ML estimation of distribution which has threshold do not hold for some combinations of parameter values. In this paper, we propose a method for parameter estimation of the three-parameter gamma distribution. The proposed method has the following properties: (1) the estimates exist uniquely, (2) the estimators are consistent estimators, (3) the estimates can be obtained sequentially.
