The management of abandoned Satoyama which is the Japanese name for socio-ecological production landscape has become a difficult problem for biodiversity conservation in Japan. In order to conserve Satoyama and regional biodiversity, restoration of the relationships with local people is important. This study aims to discuss how we can sustain local people’s interaction with Satoyama in the present time. The study site Mt. Omine, which can be described as a typical Satoyama landscape, is located in Fukutsu city, Fukuoka, Japan. We investigated changes in the relationships between local people and Mt. Omine and the ecological condition of the abandoned forest on Mt. Omine. We found that ecosystem services provided from Mt. Omine declined in association with the reduction in use of the forest. In the abandoned forest, Moso-bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) has expanded and dense bamboo thickets have formed. However, new collaborative management has been started in order to implement city plans for the environment. The collaborative management project is trying to obtain ecosystem services through discussing how to utilize Satoyama and conducting workshops. The result of the workshops implies that the values of Mt. Omine for the present generation of local people are different from the past; however, people could obtain ecosystem services and conserve biodiversity through the management which is conducted in the same way as in the past. In addition, the process of restoring Satoyama could provide opportunities for local people to realize the values and functions of the surrounding natural environment. Therefore, the stakeholders of Satoyama restoration should explore its values in the present situation and learn from the past methods and wisdom in the relationship between people and Satoyama.

Bamboo forests are distributed across sites with various natural and social properties, although distribution patterns and site properties vary widely with regions and periods studied. Abandoned Bamboo Forests (ABFs) have been invading the adjacent lands since the bamboo industry had declined in 1980s. Bamboo can invade sites with various natural properties such as slope degree, slope position, land-use types and so on, leading that ABFs has increased their area largely. Expansion of ABFs also are affected by human impacts as well as the land-use types neighboring the ABFs. Studies on awareness about the expansion of bamboo forests for local residents showed that the many residents recognized that expanded bamboo forests have been abandoned but had less recognition that many bamboo forests have been expanding. Further, urban and suburban residents had different opinions about the ecosystem services bamboo forests provide. Ecosystem services such as habitats for wildlife and carbon stock have deteriorated in ABFs. To enhance ecosystem functions of ABFs, various techniques could be used such as constructing the new uses for bamboo culm and effective logging methods. In order to use ABFs as part of green infrastructure, establishment of long-term management systems that can be enhance ecosystem services of ABFs are important.

Ecosystem Services (ES) are the ecological characteristics, functions, or processes that directly or indirectly contribute to human well-being. Green Infrastructure (GI) is characterized by its multiple benefits. In Japan, GI is defined as infrastructure and land use planning which enhances regional and national sustainability. The ecological functions and use by people in the study site were limited. Consequently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism (MLIT) asked the Laboratory of Environmental Design at Kyushu Institute of Technology (KIT), to design a new river bank. This project started in 2008, and the restoration plan was developed in cooperation together with local residents. We also considered how to implement GI in local community and could provide ecosystem services for local residents. In the 1960s, the river was a familiar environment for people. Children who lived close to the river had the opportunity to learn about nature from the river; however, the present river bank covered in concrete does not provide natural experiences for children. Preserving areas such as wildlife habitats and spaces where children can play is a crucial issue nowadays. The planning site had the potential to be a place for children to learn local ecology. Therefore, we designed the riverbank fishway not only for nature restoration but also as a place for children’s ecological learning. This chapter demonstrates the process of GI construction on the river Onga estuary in Japan to contribute to regional biodiversity conservation and provide ecological learning for children. It also should be noted that the purpose of urban landscape design or planning is to connect nature and people’s daily lives. In other words, an integrated approach in terms of “nature rehabilitation” and “lifescape” will be essential to create vernacular (i.e., domestic and functional) places in the future.

There is a great and growing concern about the connection between children and nature in modern society. Conservation and management of natural areas is very important both for providing nature experiences for children and for wildlife. Therefore, improving quality of green spaces to preserve biodiversity as well as to promote children’s direct experiences of nature is required in urban areas. The main aim of this research is to explore the quality and management of the existing urban natural environment for children from the ecological perspective through a case study of a kindergarten in an urban forest in Kyoto, Japan. The data were collected focusing on (1) educational characteristics of the kindergarten, (2) physical environment of playground, (3) play activities, and (4) teacher’s awareness of nature through the environmental survey and interview. From the results, it was concluded that the substantial qualities that provide direct experience of nature for children are diverse affordances of nature, functions for play, and its ecosystems. This recognizes that children’s play activities and its outcomes from nature can be called ecosystem services. Thus playgrounds need to employ an approach for ecosystem management, and utilizing the existing natural places as a playground have the potential to be a new way of urban ecosystem conservation and management.
