    U-PARL (Uehiro Project for the Asian Research Library) at the University of Tokyo Library System has opened on Flickr a collection of digital images of rare Chinese books and calligraphic models selected from the library holdings. U-PARL chose Flickr with the aim of constructing a digital archive that was not only compact and inexpensive, but that also held the potential for aggregation by much larger database networks as well as usage by a wide-ranging audience. This paper explains how U-PARL made this choice, and shows the current status and agenda facing the archive. The focus of the paper is placed on newly designed metadata categories and cataloging conventions, the use of Creative Commons licenses and the construction of a research environment using Omeka.

    In 1831, a shrine which was called "Taet'ong haengmyo（大統行廟）", where T'ai Tsu （太祖）, the first Emperor of Ming（明） Dynasty, was worshiped, has been established in Kap'yŏng-gun （加平郡） of the Kyŏnggi（京畿） Province in Chosŏn , and an altar which was called "Kuwui haengsa（九義行祀）" was attached there in order to worship "Nine Loyalists（九義士）". Based on "Hwangjo yuminnok（皇朝遺民録）" written by Wang Tŏkku（王徳九）, who was one of the descendent of "Nine Loyalists", in 1818, they were the nine people of Ming（明） Dynasty who came to Chosŏn following Hyojong （孝宗） , the seventeenth King of Chosŏn Dynasty, when Hyojong returned from Qing（清） Dynasty in 1645. After coming to Chosŏn, they still remembered Ming （明） Dynasty, their mother country, what is more, discussed the defeat of Qing Dynasty, so called "Pukppŏl（北伐）, with Hyojong. That is the reason why they were considered as loyalists（義士）. But it was after 19th century that they began to be called as "Nine Loyalists", so we cannot just receive that they were actual loyalists. This article is going to clarify how they had been called "Nine Loyalists" from 19th century, by using historical materials made before 19th century as much as possible. Through the all examination of this article, we may draw a conclusion that behind the formation of "Nine Loyalists" there was the ideology of honoring Ming Dynasty as if it existed in Chosŏn, which was advocated in order to strengthen the king's power, and there was also the claim made by the descendent of "Nine Loyalists" behind it, that their lineage should be respected.

    From the 15^<th> century on, the Korean Choson Dynasty used the monarch's personal royal seal inscribed with the phrase "governance through virtue" (為政以徳) on the documents it dispatched to Japan. Then in 1624, the monarch's official state seal, inscribed "seal of execution" (施命之宝) appeared replacing the former seal, thus marking a change from personal correspondence to official diplomatic notification. This change came about against the backdrop of the weakening of the Ming Dynasty's commonwealth protection of Korea and the latter's reorganization of foreign diplomacy in accordance with its direct mandate under "heaven" (天). Only a few decades previous, during Toyotomi Hideyoshi's attempted invasions of Korea (1592-98), the Koreans had relied heavily on Ming China to avoid Japanese demands; but beginning in 1620, China's inability to fend off the Jurchen kingdom of Aisin Gurun became all too clear, and in response, Choson Korea had no alternative but to seek friendly relations with Japan. It was in 1624 that Korea first informed Japan of its sovereignty under heaven (天の申命), without any details about the situation in China, and made official gestures of friendship as the master of its own diplomatic fate. Furthermore, despite the fact that the Korea remained in a tributary relationship with China, by its international pronouncement that it stood was responsible only to heaven in foreign policy decision making, the tributary relationship was relativized by the independent diplomatic stance towards Japan, symbolized by a conscious substitution of the Korean monarch's official seal of state for his personal one.
