This study examines the factors that influenced the role of Kuozui Motor – Toyota’s Taiwanese subsidiary ― in developing products and manufacturing for third countries. Employing a case-based exploratory research approach, this study reveals how Kuozui was able to become a regional hub with deep involvement in new product development. The study finds that while this change was partially crisis-driven, the major factor that leads to the acquisition of new roles related to new product development by this Taiwanese subsidiary of Toyota was capability building, particularly in manufacturing engineering. The case of Kuozui suggests that at subsidiaries of Toyota in small to medium-sized markets, while maintaining high factory performance, moving upstream from manufacturing excellence to process design and process improvement excellence is a major step toward the assignment of new product development work for third-country markets.

  • The benefits and constraints of temporary sourcing diversification in supply chain disruption and recovery Reviewed

Sourcing diversification is the preferred hedge to supply chain disruption risks, but many companies insist on single-sourcing for long-term strategic benefits. For rare-but-catastrophic disruptions of fortified supply chains, temporary sourcing diversification has been seen as a desirable response strategy. However, little is known about the conditions to temporary sourcing diversification and the situations where it is applicable. Our fieldwork and comparison of two disaster recoveries at Aisin Seiki and Riken Corporation shows that while temporary sourcing diversification worked in the Aisin Seiki case, it was impossible at Riken due to the high degree of specificity required in the design and manufacturing methods of the disrupted product item, suggesting product and process specificity limits recovery alternatives. Unawareness of such constraints to temporary sourcing diversification may result in over-optimism regarding its feasibility and insufficient disaster preparedness. In addition, the case of Riken's recovery from an earthquake in 2007 is systematically documented in this paper for the first time. (c) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Viewing the automobile industry as being made up of independent learning-organisations may reveal some tie-ups that can generate value not easily revealed by traditional financial metrics. The key question to be answered when considering M&amp
A activity between automakers from this perspective is how the formation of such a relationship (or its dissolution) may affect an automaker's organisational learning (e.g., the development of increasingly higher-performing organisational routines to shorten development lead times, improve a vehicle's overall customer satisfaction, improve the ease with which a vehicle can be assembled). We analyse three case studies to obtain insights into how M&amp
A activity may be used to enhance the learning organisations of automakers. The first two cases, Renault-Nissan and Ford-Mazda, involve very significant but still minority equity stakes between Western and Japanese automakers. The third case, Chrysler-AMC, was a full acquisition involving two US firms. Copyright © 2006 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

The present paper argues that the Ford-Mazda and Renault-Nissan relationships may represent a forerunning pattern of the learning alliance, whereby ongoing close interaction of horizontal alliance partners at multiple hierarchical levels can be used to facilitate the mutual accumulation of superior organizational capabilities within the alliance firms. Our observations suggest that for this pattern of cooperation to function effectively at least the following three conditions must be met. The alliance partners must: (1) co-exist as separate learning organizations, (2) be able to evaluate accurately a partners relative organizational capability strengths and weaknesses, and (3) have the motivation and ability to facilitate a partners inter-firm learning.

In order to more accurately represent the inter-firm learning process in a strategic alliance, this paper argues that, under certain conditions, it is necessary to incorporate a teaching perspective. A framework that does so is proposed and tested by a case-study analysis. Case findings largely support the framework.
