    We proposed an analytical framework from the perspective of dynamic capabilities (DC) to examine how a Japanese retail company had obtained and sustained competitive advantages in an overseas market. We expanded the DC framework of Teece (2007, 2014a) to analyze the case of Chengdu Ito-Yokado (CIY), particularly on how DC factors had influenced CIY’s business model (BM) from the introduction to growth stages, and to explore the relationship among those factors. We confirmed that the differentiated BM was due to DC which (re)generated BM’s transformation in sustaining the competitive advantage. Therefore, we have validated the preliminary analytical framework through the case study.

    There are some companies which had fallen into critical states and regained their CAs (Competitive Advantages) through CT (Corporate Transformation). After that, however, while some companies maintain those CAs, others don't. This paper defines capability to conduct CT as a dynamic capability and analyzed three CT cases; Nissan, Panasonic and Asahi. The analyses deal with not only CT measures and results but post-CT performances as well. From this study, hypotheses have been developed on (1) kick-off approach of CT to regain a CA, (2) embedment of organizational processes at the point of the CT and (3) facilitation to evolve those organizational processes after the CT to sustain the regained CA. While this study primarily focuses on discontinuous CT, it analyses evolution of the embedded organizational process in post-CT period (as a continuous CT), which makes this study unique.
