In a sentence like Tom ate an apple/apples, (a)telicity of the event expressed by the verb phrase is determined by number and definiteness features of the object. This article discusses the second language (L2) acquisition of such formal features in terms of L1 transfer and semantic/pragmatic computation, based on the interpretation of telicity by Japanese learners of English (JLEs). Following Filip (2008), who proposes that telicity is derived by scalar implicature, it is argued that the insensitivity to formal features by elementary learners arises from a failure in the application of scalar implicature. Further, it is also argued that the difficulty intermediate learners have with the interpretation of definite plurals lies in lexical learning of formal features (definiteness) because of the lack of the lexical item the in their first language (L1).

This discussion article tries to explain the variability commonly observed in second language learners' use of grammatical morphemes. For almost two decades, second language studies have tried to specify THE right answer for why (even very advanced) L2 learners exhibit persistent difficulty in using inflectional morphemes, typically substituting bare forms for inflected forms. This line of inquiry is in fact misguided, as argued in previous work (e.g., Wakabayashi, 2013). We advance the present study in a more principled ‘analytic’ way, building on the framework of Distributed Morphology (Halle & Marantz, 1993), and it will be made clear that variability in second language use arises at multiple levels, due to incompleteness at Numeration within the Lexicon, at operations within morphosyntax, at Vocabulary Insertion, and at mechanisms of performance that function after linguistic operations have concluded.

Lardiere suggests that second language acquisition (SLA) researchers should pay more attention to the distribution of a given feature in source and target languages, using the distribution of [plural] in English, Chinese and Korean to illustrate. I argue that the distribution of [definite] in English shows a similar complexity, and that this has largely been ignored in existing second language studies. I propose that it is distributional complexity of this kind that underlies the gradual development and variability observed in second language (L2) performance. A four-stage model is outlined, attributing gradual development/variability (partly) to optionality in the numeration.

It has been widely reported that even advanced level second language learners have problems with grammatical morphemes. Recently, especially in the minimalist framework, a number of studies have focused on the sources of this problem and discussed whether they are at the syntax level or not. In order to contribute to this discussion, we collected neuro-physiological data (the event related potentials) of Japanese learners' sensitivity to ungrammaticality caused by the lack of subject-verb agreement in their L2 English. Our data showed that Japanese learners showed sensitivity to ungrammaticality of the given sentence (P600) when subjects and verbs did not agree in terms of person (e.g., *I answers your letter) and that P600 did not appear when subjects and verbs did not agree in terms of number, even when 3rd person singular-was overused (e.g., *The teachers answers our questions; *Sam and Adam answers our questions). Based on this finding, it will be suggested that the difficulty of the correct use of morphemes is not solely attributed to mapping from syntax tomorphology; Japanese learners are likely to have problems with taking features in the numeration; and the asymmetry between person and number is attributable to the difference (s) of these two features : the former is inherent but the latter is optional; and/or the former is available in learners' first language but the latter is not.

Eighty-one seventh- and eighth-grade students (age 12-14) learning English in Japanese classrooms were tested on their knowledge of English case-marked pronouns in sentences like He likes her, *He likes she and *Him likes her. The aim of the study was to evaluate the predictions of three theories of second language (L2) development against the results obtained. Given the case-marking properties of Japanese, the Full Transfer/Full Access model of Schwartz (1998) and Schwartz and Sprouse (1994; 1996; 2000), the Minimal Trees model of Vainikka and Young-Scholten (1994; 1996a; 1996b; 1998) and the Lexical Learning/Lexical Transfer model of Wakabayashi (1997; 2002) make different predictions about the kinds of patterns of case-marked pronouns that will be found in the second language English of early learners with Japanese first language (L1). It is argued that the results are consistent with the predictions of the Lexical Learning/Lexical Transfer model, but with neither Full Transfer/Full Access nor Minimal Trees.

Japanese allows null subjects and null objects, while English allows neither. This difference implies that the acquisition of obligatory objects is as difficult as the acquisition of obligatory subjects for Japanese learners of English. Contrary to this prediction, data in this study suggest that obligatory objects are far more difficult than obligatory subjects for Japanese learners of English (JLEs). With the same kind of data from Chinese learners of English, Yuan (1997) suggests that this asymmetry is attributable to the availability of triggering data in input : the availability of morphological evidence of subject-verb agreement triggers the acquisition of obligatory subjects in Chinese learners' L2 grammar, while there are no such triggering data for the acquisition of obligatory objects. We argue that although Yuan's explanation, with his assumption that learners' use of morphemes does not reflect syntactic knowledge, cannot be refuted, it is not supported by experimental data. Davies (1996), for example, showed that the acquisition of morphological subject-verb agreement and the acquisition of obligatory subjects are independent of each other. We suggest three factors for the asymmetry. One is the difference in the consistency in L2 input. Namely, subject noun phrases are consistently phonetically realized in every sentence in English, while object noun phrases are not; i.e., sentences with intransitive verbs lack object noun phrases. With this kind of input, JLEs may believe null objects to be allowed in English. In addition, the verbs that can be used as both transitive and intransitive may lead JLEs to take a wrong track. Moreover, the lack of morphological markings for transitivity on English verbs may make it difficult for JLEs to learn the syntactic properties of each verb.

Second language acquisition (SLA) research in the last 20 years appears to have shown that Universal Grammar (UG) constrains SLA, and a number of specific models of SLA have been offered. However, some crucial problems have been left unsolved in previous models suggested by the Principles and Parameters Approach
the Minimalist Program is likely to provide a better account of the data. The acquisition of the obligatoriness of overt subjects in English is one such problem. The Minimalist approach suggests that first language (L1) transfer is realized as the transfer of lexical items and their features. This further implies that some cross-linguistic effects do not exist at the initial stage of development, but may emerge gradually in the course of second language (L2) development in accordance with the expansion of L2 lexicon and the number of lexical items to be placed in the sentence structure. With these considerations, the Minimalist Program provides us with a new framework for explaining data concerning the L2 acquisition of non-null subjects in English, especially the developmental changes of interlanguage grammar and L1 influences on it. © 2002, Sage Publications. In this project we examined Japanese EFL learners' development in interlanguage grammar by conducting three separate experiments. The first study investigated the difficulty order of 36 grammatical items with oral and written discourse completion tests. Results showed that grammatical items requiring complex sentence processing were difficult for Japanese EFL learners. In the second study, effects of three different pedagogical interventions were compared using a pretest-post-test design. It turned out that explicit form-focused instruction was relatively effective for the acquisition of complex grammatical items. In the third study, the processes of grammatical development of Japanese junior high school students were extensively examined.

English compound nouns (Noun+Verb+-er,e.g.,cat eater) are productive. It has been reported that children learning English as their mother tongue and Spanish speaking learners of English as a second language produce errors in places where this kind of compound should be used. The results of two experiments in this study showed that Japanese speaking learners of English also make errors but the kinds of errors are different from those produced by other learners. Based on data from previous studies and from this study, it was suggested that the errors are attributable to : 1) the application of syntactic rules to morphological operations, and 2) errors in the use of other morphemes (i.e.,-ing).

We carried out a review of theoretical works and empirical studies, including investigations into a learner corpus and conducting an experiment. In the review, we mainly focused on Nishiyama's (2003) description of Japanese genitive no and Rappaport's (2004) and Rozwadowska's (2006) works on the English pre-nominal genitive-'s and the post-nominal genitive of. Based on these studies, we described similarities and differences among these three morphemes. With regard to the learner corpus, we used the NICT JLE Corpus (Izumi, Uchimoto, and Isahara, 2004), and illustrated some characteristics in Japanese learners' production of English genitive-'s and of. Our findings showed that i) Japanese learners tend to use of more often than-'s; ii) they differentiate these two morphemes in a similar way as native speakers do; iii) they produce errors which are likely to be due to their first language grammar; iv)learners tend to frequently produce the genitive of when their general proficiency in English becomes higher; but v) the same tendency was not observed with regard to pre-nominal genitive marker-'s. We carried out an experiment with seventy-four Japanese learners of English and twenty-one native speakers of English. The purpose of this experiment was to examine their knowledge of constraints involving the use of the two genitive markers with the arguments of de-Verbal nouns. We set up our material based on Haegeman and Gueron (1999), but native speakers did not behave as we had expected, and hence we failed to obtain data relevant to answer our questions. This is because native speakers' interpretation and judgment of sentences were highly sensitive to semantic and pragmatic aspects which we did not anticipate. We intend to carry out further research after this project.

In the fourth year and final year of the project, the team focused on five areas in compiling the Japanese version of CEFR : (1) Analysis of English Textbooks in Asia, (2) Corporate Survey, (3) English Competency Survey, (4) Competency Index Survey using Linguistic Tests, and (5) Survey of Elementary, Junior High, and Senior High School Students in Japan. The survey results were tabulated and analyzed to draft a prototype Japanese version of CEFR.
The various levels of competency on the CEFR scale were further sub-divided so that the framework would be more functional. The Finnish model was used as a base reference, to which can-do statements, concrete vocabulary, and grammar items were added, taking into consideration the four skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), settings, functions and other factors. A model syllabus was compiled based on this new framework.
A survey of Japanese business people became the basis for defining the levels. The survey asked people in the workforce what level of English they need in order to function at their jobs. The comparative textbook survey of four Asian countries (China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Japan) indicates there are absolutely fewer vocabulary words in Japanese English textbooks, compared with the other countries. A concrete vocabulary list is being compiled to check proficiency levels more accurately.
Elementary school curricula and other concrete syllabi and teaching plans are currently being drafted for the CEFR preA1 level. The materials needed to compile such curricula and syllabi have been collected. It is significant that the group has been able to issue a proposal on setting objectives for English education in Japan, based on concrete and empirical data
It is especially significant that the team was able to determine what aspects of second language acquisition are effective and what features of CEFR need to be supplemented for Japanese learners, when it drafted the Japanese version of CEFR. The team was able to clarify the process for drafting the English achievement standard and has completed a prototype framework of the Japanese version of CEFR.

Studies in second language acquisition in 1980s and 1990s revealed that learners know more than what is available in input and what can be learned with general learning strategies. On the other hand, the question why some specific items are extremely difficult to acquire did not attract researchers until late 90s. Researchers have tried to answer this question since, but their arguments generally rely on naturalistic data, which were not completely suitable to the purpose. This study has carried out a series of experiments in which syntactic contexts were controlled. The results show that the proportion of errors varies in accordance with certain syntactic contexts, and that this variation is not totally attributable to the linear distance between the subject and the verb.
The whole study is divided into five. In the first study (Chapter 1 in the technical report), I pointed out the importance of the theoretical framework and suggested that the linguistic theory is the most appropriate. In the second study (Chapter 2), three sets of experimental data were presented. The first two were production data collected with an oral translation task, and the other was comprehension data with a self-paced reading task. In the third study (Chapter 3), another oral translation task was carried out. In the fourth study (Chapter 4), event-related brain potentials (ERP) were collected. In the fifth study (Chapter 5), data were collected to investigate the system of verb inflections, and this time, the material was English past tense inflection instead of 3rd person singular -s.
As discussed in the report, we need to carry out further experiments, where a number of variables, such as phonology, syntax, and discourse, are controlled. Some relevant items, such as be-verb and auxiliary have/has, were not dealt with in this study, and hence further research is certainly required.
