This study investigated how a learner’s native language phoneme inventory affects the perception and production of second language speech sounds. We sought to determine whether the addition of novel phonemes through L2 acquisition causes a restructuring of the perceptual map, thereby altering the perceptual space and the mapping of acoustic features to segmental categories, including native language phonemes. Perceptual experiments with L1 Chinese- and L1 Japanese-speakers showed that native language inventories dictate L2 perceptual confusion and further suggested that learning an L2 leads to restructuring of the perceptual map. In addition, spectrographic analysis of acoustic features in the production of L2 sounds that are similar to L1 segments showed that the precise acoustic features change depending on a learner’s stage of acquisition.

We have investigated how L2 learners build new phonological categories by assembling novel weightings of acoustic cues and mapping them onto new segmental representations. The series of experimental studies we have conducted has shown that the use of particular acoustic cues changes over the course of L2 acquisition. We have also shown that resulting refinements in selective attention improve L2 perceptual accuracy, although the precise effect of such selective attention differs across phonological categories.

Focusing on the Japanese, English, Chinese, and Tagalog languages, our research project has explored similarities and differences in linguistic knowledge and language processing among heritage language speakers, native speakers, and second language learners through various empirical methodologies. In particular, we have examined the production and comprehension of relative clauses in Chinese, Japanese and Tagalog, the interpretation of reflexive pronouns in Japanese through a look-while-listening eye tracking experiment (Eye Link 1000, SR Research, Inc.), and the second language acquisition of English articles and multiple adjective ordering, and found evidence of both cross-linguistic effects as well as universal properties.

The purpose of the investigation was to conduct research on the following issues: The influence of a second language on one's first language (L1); the maintenance and/or the loss of proficiency in the L1 and the acquisition, maintenance and possible loss of proficiency in the second language (L2). We have investigated the causes of change (if any change has taken place) and proposed the type of education a child or a language learner needs for further language development. The main findings are the following:
    (1) Regarding the L1 loss of foreign children who reside in Japan, some children showed gain while others showed loss in their cognitive ability. Chinese children generally observed development in L2 Japanese but there was a variation among Filipino children. (2) Japanese returnees showed no loss in their listening abilities and grammar in L2 English. (3) Japanese and Spanish learners of English and English and Chinese learners of Japanese observed some L1 effects in their L2.

Our previous research has revealed that L2 learners use acoustic cues that are not phonologically relevant for segmental perception in their L1. As a result, we have proposed a model for phonological perception we term the Category Activation Threshold Model. This model maintains that sensitivity to acoustic details not used for categorical distinction is actively suppressed in the course of mapping acoustic cues to phonological categories.
