「小説知」という新しい概念を提唱する本研究は、人間が世界をいかに認識するかを文学研究の立場から検討する認知詩学・認知物語論の研究をさらに一歩押し進め、「物語」からは区別され「近代」に特有の文学形式たる「小説」という観点から、近代人の世界との関わり方をとらえ直すことを目的としている。
新型コロナウイルスの影響から、プロジェクト三年目となる2020年度（令和2年度）では、資料収集や学会参加のための国内外への新たな出張は取り消しとなった。しかし、すでに2年分の資料の蓄積もあったことから、2020年度は、個別作家の事例研究を中心に、それぞれの研究環境が許すかたちで実施可能な限りの研究を遂行した。
研究代表者の諏訪部による一連の論考「薄れゆく境界線――現代アメリカ小説探訪」（2020年6月～）は、本研究が掲げる「小説知」概念の構築に資するべく、ノワール小説、ゴシック小説など、さまざまなジャンル小説を検証するものである。直接の考察対象は第二次世界大戦後のアメリカ文学だが、個々の論考においては、戦後文学という共時性だけではなく、各ジャンルの通時性にも十分な意識を払っており、研究分担者たちの研究にも接続可能となる包括的・立体的なアプローチがとられている。本研究は物語論・認知詩学、ジャンル論・アダプテーション論の関連書の整理をもっとも基礎的な作業として位置づけているが、その具体的な成果としてこの論考を挙げることができる。
また、本研究は、「関係の構想」「情動の喚起」「教育的機能」という三つのサブテーマを掲げているが、「教育的機能」については、分担者阿部の著書（2020年10月）を挙げることができる。語学スキルの関連書と見える本書だが、第二言語習得論の基本と、文学者ならではの観点を両立した研究成果となっている。 -
