    European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL, 2007) contains a wide spectrum of knowledge about language learning. We have adapted this document into Japanese Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (J-POSTL, 2014) intended for use by student teaches and middle school teachers. From 2016 we have started drawing up Japanese Portfolio for elementary school teachers of languages (J-POSTL Elementary). We have published the trial version of J-POSTL
    Elementary in August, 2018. We also have confirmed the self-evaluation descriptors for elementary school teachers in March, 2019. Now we are preparing the full version of J-POSTL Elementaty. Before its publication, we will conduct a nation-wide survey on the feasibility of selected descriptors.

    The goal of this research is to develop a language learning portfolio and a method of its practical use as a promotion tool of Communicative Language Teaching. Based on an idea that language should be learned through using the target language, we developed a portfolio which encourages learners’ independent learning. We mainly focused on developing an efficient teaching method using this portfolio as a main goal of this research. Considering points which possibly give language learners good chances to improve their learning, project-based learning is one of the appropriate methods for conducting classes using an portfolio because it can enhance learners' effective reflection of their language learning, which possibly leads to establish each learner’s appropriate language learning. For examples, collaborating learning and CLIL style learning are recommended as efficient styles of project-based learning.

    In 2014 we completed the adaptation of the European Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (EPOSTL) and published three variants of Japanese Portfolio for Student Teachers of Languages (J-POSTL).There are mainly four reasons for the creation of J-POSTL: to induce paradigm shift in language teaching, to enhance didactic as well as language competencies of teachers, to encourage collaborative learning and teaching, and to highlight the importance of establishing standards for teacher education. The J-POSTL was used in methodology classes at many universities and in workshops and seminars for in-service training for the past few years. The J-POSTL was found to be very effective as a reflection tool to help prepare them for their future and present profession in a variety of teaching contexts.

    This research focused on development of a language learning portfolio as a tool to enhance autonomous English learning. The primary purpose of this portfolio is to enhance learners’ motivation through using this tool. From the viewpoint of learners' needs for language learning, they confirm their learning goals, and evaluate their own attainment with the portfolio, which relates to establishing their English autonomous learning cycle. Through the one year experimental project using this portfolio at a high school, it has been confirmed that students’ motivation has been improved significantly. Moreover, it has been also confirmed that teachers’ awareness toward teaching skills has deepened.
