    I argue how cooperative behaviors are influenced by employment protection legislation (EPL), which is viewed in terms of two types of firing costs: administrative costs (such as notification procedures) and monetary transfers (such as severance pay). I focus on the minimum discount factor for mutual cooperation under trigger strategies in a relational contract model, where a firm has two payment options: a formal wage and an informal bonus. It will be shown that administrative costs enhance cooperation when they are low, whereas monetary transfers dampen cooperation when they are high. In addition, I show under what wage scheme cooperation is most likely self-enforced.

    This study examines the effects of guilty conscience on incentive in the situation where an agent performance assessment has errors. There are two types of assessment error: undervaluation and overvaluation. In overvaluation, agents will not correct the assessment because their wages would then decrease. Although agents will want their undervaluation corrected, principals will not correct the error due to increased wage cost. Hence, correcting errors is complicated. However, this type of selfish behavior by agents and principals produces feelings of guilt, particularly when others trust them. In this situation, a high incentive is desirable for conscientious people with a strong sense of guilt or for nonconscientious people who do not feel guilt, but it is undesirable for intermediate-type people who are conscientious only to a certain extent.     I consider the effects of employment protection (EP) on worker incentives in the labor market with search friction, where EP is categorized into severance pay (SP) and procedural inconvenience (PI). When firms cannot distinguish shirkers, EP seems to negatively affect worker incentives, because shirkers are unlikely to be fired. However, EP can have a positive effect on worker incentives because diligent workers are protected by EP. It is shown that the positive effect can dominate the negative one when EP is moderate. In particular, PI tends to improve the unemployment rate and welfare, while SP has a somewhat unclear effect. J. Japanese Int. Economies 34 (2014) 272-290.     This paper examines how a minimum wage, viewed as an incentive to trainers, would affect the informal help provided through on-the-job training. In the work environment, experienced employees play a significant role in training new employees. However, the more help they provide to trainees, the less likely that the trainers themselves will be promoted. This is the trainer's dilemma: help trainees or work for promotion. We show that a minimum wage alleviates the trainer's dilemma, as it increases the earnings of non-promoted workers and reduces the net benefit of promotion for experienced employees. Hence, minimum wage regulation encourages informal help and enhances welfare, although it reduces the firm's profit. © 2010 CEIS, Fondazione Giacomo Brodolini and Blackwell Publishing Ltd.

    We consider a simple employment contract model to analyze the difference between two remedies for unjust dismissals: damages vs. reinstatement. The bargaining power of workers in the reinstatement case is stronger in severe recessions than it is in the damages case. In contrast, reinstatement worsens the bargaining position of workers in moderately severe recessions than do damages, and hence, the payoff for workers in the reinstatement case is greater in severe recessions and lower in moderately severe recessions than it is in the damages case. A higher payoff in the severe state causes serious damage to workers' incentives because shirking behavior is more attractive under the reinstatement policy. Firms are more likely to fire workers in the reinstatement case than in the damages case. Since there is a transaction cost with employment adjustment, damages are better than reinstatement from the viewpoint of workers' incentives. © 2008 by bepress.

    There are two types of legal remedies for unjust dismissal, damages or reinstatement. Although workers' motivation is negatively influenced by employment adjustments such as a wage cut or layoffs, fired workers can receive a remedy when they are protected by dismissal regulations. We consider which legal remedy policy is better, damages or reinstatement, from the viewpoint of workers' motivation at workplaces. Under a reinstatement policy, firms are more likely to make an employment adjustment, and reinstatement is dominated by damages from the viewpoint of social welfare when the productivity loss caused by employment adjustment is minor. On the other hand, when the productivity loss is serious, employment adjustment is more likely made under the damages policy, and reinstatement can be desirable. J. Japanese Int.     I consider the relationship between workers' performance measurement errors and the duration of job assignments when workers can engage in influence activities. Job transfer plays a significant role in preventing workers from performing influence activities for private benefit. I show that the difficulty in measuring workers' performance leads to frequent job transfers, which is consistent with the occupations of bank employee, journalist, and bureaucrat, among others, whose private job performances are difficult to observe.     In the work environment, older employees play a significant role in training younger employees. Why do older employees provide this training when they are rivals competing for promotion? Is it because the more training they provide to trainees, the less likely those trainers will be promoted? We show that the fostering of generalists rather than specialists can soften the trainers' dilemma of choosing between training and promotion because the amount of training provided by a trainer decreases that trainer's promotion probability to a greater extent when training specialists than when training generalists. Hence, even if the productivity of the generalist is lower than that of the specialist, the generalist scheme can still lead to a higher level of training and improve a firm's profit and social welfare.     Under incompleteness of contracts, we consider one role of unions is to function as commitment devices. When wage and dismissal rates contingent on the states are not specified in labor contracts, firms cannot promise ex ante to maintain employment. Thus, firms must offer a high wage to encourage workers in accumulating skills. However, if unions resist firms' dismissal policies, unions can play a significant role as commitment devices for job security. As a result, since firms can decrease wage and increase employment level, we can expect the profit of the unionized firms to be higher than that of non-union firms. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.     I consider the effects of monitoring costs on the wage profile and employment adjustment of older white-collar workers under asymmetric information on workers' efforts towards skill acquisition. A firm has two options to encourage employees to acquire skills: delayed compensation tan upward-sloping wage profile), and monitoring. I show that the high monitoring costs common in white-collar jobs result in a more upward-sloping wage profile and fewer dismissals under a larger "hostage repayment", which is the difference between the wage payment and productivity of older employees.
