This joint-research project was designed to shed light on the beginning and early development of teaching of political economy in higher education institutions in England and India. The focus of research was placed on the East India College (Haileybury College), where Thomas Robert Malthus held the first professorship in political economy from 1805, and after his death, Richard Jones succeeded, and the University of Oxford, where, on the foundation of the professorship of political economy in 1825, Nassau William Senior was appointed to it. A few decades later in the mid-nineteenth century, teaching of political economy was launched in schools and universities in India. An example is Elphinstone Institution, where Mahadev Govind Ranade, the father of Indian economics, was taught British classical political economy. This made another object of this research project.

This study seeks to clarify the contents, features, and backgrounds of teaching political economy at the East India College and Oxford University in nineteenth century England. Malthus, Jones, and Stephen delivered lectures on political economy and history at the College, which had the purpose of providing recruits for the civil service in India. On the other hand, Whatley, who was one of the earliest professors of political economy at Oxford University, had the responsibility for establishing political economy as a discipline in England.
This study focuses on the professors’ teachings of political economy at the college and university, and demonstrates the significance of their views on political economy. In order to attain the aim, we surveyed many manuscripts collected in the British Library, Bodleian Library, and Cambridge University. We also shed light on the features of Dugald Stewart’s and James Mill’s view on political economy, as precursors of the above economists

We held international conferences and workshops on David Ricardo, with over 40 overseas researchers from 15 countries, 20 times in total within the past 5 years. We clarified the modernity of Ricardo in the history of economic thought and his impact on economics, while building an international network of joint research.
