本研究は19世紀末から20世紀初頭にかけてのアイルランドの大衆音楽文化とその文学的表象を研究対象としているが、今年度は特に家庭音楽(domestic music)に焦点を当て、アイルランドおよびイギリスにおける私的空間でいかに音楽が享受されていたか分析した。使用した資料は文学作品や新聞記事、作家や著名人の日記などで、主に書籍として出版されているものとデジタル化されているものを調査対象とした。とりわけピアノの所有がヴィクトリア朝のrespectabilityの概念と深く結びついていたことを、英国の貴族・上流階級の会員制クラブの歴史との関連で考察し、例えばジェイムズ・ジョイスの『ユリシーズ』第十一挿話に描かれているような音楽会が、アイルランドというよりはイギリスの伝統に連なることを確認した。そのうえで、それとは別に考えられるアイルランド特有の音楽的文脈としてケイリー(ceili)に着目した。ケイリーは世紀転換期のアイルランドでは、ダグラス・ハイド率いるゲーリック・リーグの強力なプロモーションによってアイルランドのダンスを楽しむ場として知られるようになっていたが、その起源は隣人の家を訪問し、ダンスのみならず様々なパフォーマンスに興じることを指した。domestic ceili特徴として、その場にいる者すべてが何かを披露することを求められ、事前に決められたプログラムはなく、インフォーマルであることが挙げられる。同時に、矛盾するようではあるが、インフォーマルさは参加者間に共有される一種の「暗黙の了解」に依ることで可能になるものである。アイルランドの家庭音楽シーンにおいては、先に述べたイギリスの家庭音楽の伝統のほかに、ケイリーが一つの型を提供していたことを明らかにした。
