In this narrative account I explore how university students see their linguistic repertoires and what connections they make to wider issues in society. The site for this exploration is a weekly general education lecture course on “Multilingual Issues in a Globalising World.” The main tools of this exploration are language portraits by four students, and interviews with the students about their portraits and written work for the course, as well as discussions with colleagues teaching the course, my “response community,” and two reviewers for this issue of The Learner Development Journal. These interactions lead me to focus on issues of linguistic discrimination, oppression and privilege, as well as to consider how a critical stance towards the multilingual turn in learner development may need to take account of the deep-rooted historical and political impacts of imperialism and nationalism.

  • Exploring Identity Conflict in Learners’ Linguistic Repertoires: Portraits, Stories, Poems, and Issues Reviewed

    The Learner Development Journal   3   111 - 134   2019.12

     More details

Language:English   Publishing type:Research paper (scientific journal)

n this paper I share critical perspectives on identity conflicts that emerged in interviews with three undergraduate students about how they understand their linguistic repertoires (Blommaert, 2008, 2010; Busch, 2014) and why they frame their understandings in particular ways to do with identity conflict. The exploratory process includes students’ reflections about the language portraits (Busch, 2012, 2018; Chik, 2014, 2017; Chik, Markose, & Alperstein, 2018; Wolf, 2014) that they drew of themselves as language users. It also makes use of various “I-poems” (Gilligan & Eddy, 2017) that are directly composed from what the students said in the interviews. Providing striking crystallisa- tions of significant incidents and episodes in the students’ languaged experiences, the I-poems not only illuminate their active agency in dealing with identity conflicts, but also point to wider issues of discrimination, inclusion, and power that each experienced. I relate these issues to language ideologies that are commonly reproduced in soci- ety and that can be seen to have significant impacts on learners’ identities and their linguistic repertoires.

In this jointly written review, we give an overview of the whole book before focusing on four chapters of particular interest to our lived experiences as multilinguals, language teachers or practitioner-researchers. The first part of this review explores the value of narrative analysis as a way to make sense of the struggles that transnationals face in living multilingually and multiculturally. We then focus on visual/multimodal approaches in combination with life-history inquiries to explore individuals’ linguistic repertoires and their lived experiences of language. The third part looks at ideas for investigating the interplay between language ideologies and the way that languages are used in different institutional linguistic landscapes. Lastly, we take up the benefits of team ethnography for teacher-researchers in investigating multilingual issues together. We conclude by briefly considering the relevance of this research anthology to the multilingual turn for learner development.

In Heisei 13, a corpus of about 100,000 words and a student-selected target list of relevant URLs were established. Students were interviewed in depth about (a) how they notice and retrieve collocations from their readings; (b) what difficulties they face in noticing, retrieving and analyzing collocations. A pilot study was also conducted with one class group as to which collocations learners retrieve from a common text and which collocations learners use in summarizing the same text. The pilot study was extended to include a total of 86 students at the start of Heisei 14. This study led to several insights about the connections between noticing, retrieving and producing collocations. Because of time limits, the research project in Heisei 14 focused on analyzing the data collected and on establishing solid research insights. These included the semantic transparency of different verb + noun collocations, and the central role that collocations play in carrying the information content of texts. Delexicalization was also identified as a key process in collocational development. A 100-page report was written summarizing and discussing the different research results. The focus on research meant that the production of web-based learning materials had to be delayed, but the theoretical basis for the production of such pedagogic materials is now clear.
