    すべての子どもが学校に通い、知識や学歴を身につけることが当たり前とされる、「学校化」の進む南アジア。しかし都市と農村、私立と公立、公用語ミディアム、英語ミディアム、宗教的な学校、民族やカースト、ジェンダーによる格差など、多様性に富む南アジアの学校や子どもたちの経験は、日本での学校経験とは大きく異なる。社会階層と深く結びついた「多様性」や「格差」の中で、少しでもより良い教育機会を得ようとする「教育熱」の高まりは、この地域で共通してみられる。機会を手に入れたり、かえって苦悩を抱え込んだりしながらもがく人々や教育を通して見える社会の様子を、本著では写真と共に紹介している。

    From linguistic citizenship approach, this research looks to the purposes and motivations of the educators, coordinators, and learners involved in the educational activities in Santhali language, the language of one of the Scheduled Tribes (indigenous groups) in India. Through interviews and survey, it was found the educators and learners seek to constitute various forms of sociocultural connections that would improve their socioeconomic and sociocultural status as an individual and an indigenous group through the knowledge and activism through the language lessons.

    先住民の母語教育は、公平性と文化的多様性の両面で「持続可能な開発目標(SDGs)」達成のために重要な課題である。しかし公教育での導入は数まず、多くの先住民族の子どもたちは教育制度により周縁化され、彼らの社会経済活動への参加にも影響を与えている。本研究では、草の根で自律的な言語活動を行う人々の行為主体に着目したLinguistic Citizenship (LC)の理論的枠組みから、インドの「先住部族」サンタル族の民族組織が地域や地元企業の協力などを得て、オルタナティブなスペースを自ら構築し実施する教育活動に着目する。そして言語教育活動を通じた学習者の社会的な自己形成を捉えるとともに、市民社会を中心とした言語教育の可能性と課題を明らかにする。
