Daishi OKADA is a professor at Chuo University, Tokyo. his PhD dissertation titled “Post-War Reform program at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, ” was awarded a PhD degree by the Tokyo Institute of Technology in April, 2005. His dissertation attempts to analyze the post-war reform program at the Tokyo institute of technology (Tokyo Tech) by placing it in its social, political and historical contexts by drawing on official and unofficial records, other primary sources and interviews with surviving actors. He shows the connection between the postwar university reforms in Japan and those of the U.S during the interwar period. In the 1930s, Massachusetts Institute of Technology had reformed its education programs and become an advanced science and engineering university. At Tokyo tech, some faculty members visited MIT and learned about the MIT curricula in chemical engineering at the very time when MIT has just completed its major reform program. To advance his study of the connection between the reforms programs of these two countries, he would like explore the issue further both in Japan and in the United States, and has identified the theme "university reform in the interwar U. S. and its impact on the postwar Japanese universities" as his postdoctoral research project.
