    Abstract

    We examined the potential of environmental DNA (eDNA) for identifying tsunami deposits in the geological record using lake-bottom sediments in the Tohoku region, Japan. The presence of eDNA from marine organisms in a lacustrine event deposit provides very strong evidence that the deposit was formed by an influx of water from the ocean. The diverse DNA assemblage in the deposit formed by the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami included DNA of marine origin indicating that eDNA has potential as an identifying proxy for tsunami deposits. Subsequently, we examined the applicability of eDNA for recognizing paleo-tsunami events using the deposits formed by the 869 CE Jogan tsunami and a prehistoric event (2400–2900 cal year BP). The taxa detected in the tsunami deposits were markedly different from those of the background sediments. Many taxa that were represented in the Jogan tsunami deposit were also detected in the layer immediately above the tsunami deposit. This layer was indistinguishable from the overlying peat by visual observation, but the eDNA results suggest that it is likely to be a muddy tsunami deposit. The results of this study indicate that eDNA has the potential to elucidate the origin of event deposits that have been difficult to identify.

    Abstract

    This paper documents the sedimentary characteristics of the widespread deposits associated with the 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami on the lowlands along the Pacific coast of the Sendai and Fukushima regions, northern Japan, and observed tsunami inundation depths. In eight areas of the region, field observation was carried out at a total of 123 locations and sampling at a total of 49 locations. Grain-size analysis and soft X-ray imaging reveal that the tsunami deposits are usually composed of sheetlike sandy beds and generally show landward-thinning and landward-fining trends and a landward increase in mud content, although site-specific distributional patterns are apparent along each transect. These thickness and grain-size patterns indicate a landward decrease in flow capacity. This information on the sedimentology of tsunami deposits and observed inundation depths will assist with the identification of paleo-tsunami deposits in the geological record and provide valuable constraints for mathematical analyses of tsunami hydraulic conditions related to sedimentary characteristics.

    Abstract

    Coastal deposits at Tofino, Ucluelet, and Port Alberni in Vancouver Island along the Cascadia subduction zone were re-examined to improve the earthquake history of the southwest coast of Canada. We found sand sheets interbedded within peat and mud, suggesting deposition by strong flows in a low-energy environment. Based on limiting maximum and minimum ages derived from plant macrofossils, the age of one of the sand sheets below the tsunami deposits of the great Cascadia earthquake in 1700 CE was estimated to be 1330–1430 CE. Onshore paleoseismic evidence has been documented in Vancouver Island, northern Washington, and northern Oregon during this period. However, the newly constrained age is between those of coseismic subsidence Y and W events in southern Washington, which have been recognized as the 1700 CE and the penultimate Cascadia earthquakes, respectively. Moreover, the new age partly overlaps with the age of offshore paleoseismic evidence for T2, interpreted to have originated from the penultimate Cascadia earthquake, based on offshore turbidite records. The new chronology prior to the 1700 CE Cascadia tsunami deposit from Vancouver Island contributes to a better understand of the timing of the penultimate Cascadia earthquake.

    Sometimes tsunami transports large boulders (tsunami boulders). The movement of tsunami boulders could have directly related to the hydraulic force of tsunami. Our field observations clarified that long axes of boulders at Pakarang Cape, Thailand, which had been transported by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, were likely to be vertical against the tsunami flow direction. Moreover, our hydraulic experiment revealed that boulder movement is affected by their initial long axes orientations, suggesting that shapes and long axes orientations of boulders must be considered in the numerical simulation.

    本研究では,近未来の温暖化影響による北極域環境変化の予測を目的とし,太陽日射量増加によって引き起こされた温暖化が顕著であった時代(中世温暖期,完新世最温暖期,最終退氷期,最終間氷期最温暖期)の陸域,海域における環境変化を明らかとし,現在の北極環境変化との比較から,温暖化影響の有無やその可能性に関する知見の取得を行った.
    北極圏の陸域の環境変化の復元にはアラスカ中央部で得た全長67cmの泥炭堆積物を用いた.同コアの最下部は約1000年前に相当するものの,表層は堆積速度が非常に早く深度33cmで約60年前であったことを確認した.そこで,表層33cmで40点の炭素安定同位体比測定を行い,試料採取地点近郊の気象観測データと比較を行った.その結果,泥炭堆積物の炭素安定同位体比は6月の気温と高い正の相関を持っていることから(r=0.808),ミズゴケ泥炭の炭素安定同位体比は6月の気温に依存して決定している可能性が高く,また,その関係は+1.19℃/%_0であることがわかった.Kaislahti Tillman et al. (2010)は,カナダで得られたミズゴケ泥炭の炭素同位体比と7月の気温の関係を+0.90℃/%_0と報告しており,本研究結果は彼らの値と近い値である.以上の結果を踏まえ,同コアの炭素安定同位体比連続データから過去1000年間の気温変動を復元したところ,西暦1120~H80年に約10年で5.3℃の気温低下が起こり,その時期が約60年間続いていたことが推定された.グリーンランド西部の湖沼堆積物の分析から,同様の時期に-4.7士0.7℃の気温低下があったことが報告されており(D'Andrea et al., 2011),少なくとも12世紀は北極域が寒冷な気候であった可能性が高いことが明らかとなった.
