Increasing incidences of climate-change-related extreme weather is known to cause risk perception and anxiety. When these psychological reactions lead to proactive behaviors such as an intention to purchase a disaster insurance policy, the psychological reactions are regarded as adaptive. According to the deficit model, information contents should strongly affect psychological reactions and proactive behaviors. However, the causal model postulates that the processing depth of information should affect psychological reactions and proactive behaviors. These models led to an examination of the deficit model in Study 1 and of the causal model in Study 2. In Study 1, 505 participants, who did not have disaster insurance at the time of the study, were randomly assigned to either the informative or less informative condition. Then, they responded to an online questionnaire which included items for demographics, risk perceptions regarding climate-change-related disasters, efficacy in dealing with climate-change-related disasters, anxiety about climate-related disasters, absence of worry about a climate-related disasters, and intention to buy disaster insurance. The results revealed no significant difference between the informative and less informative conditions, implying that the deficit model was not supported. In Study 2, 445 participants, who did not have disaster insurance at the time, were randomly assigned to shallower or deeper processing conditions, and all participants responded to the same questionnaires used in Study 1. The results indicated that risk perception and insurance purchase intentions were higher in the deeper processing condition, implying that the deficit model is partially supported. Taken together, manipulating the manner in which information is processed can be an effective way to promote proactive behavior.

Within the context of urban planning in the 21st century, it is important to evaluate landscape design impressions, which can be stakeholders’ important criteria for selecting urban green space proposals in public offering processes. In this study, we aimed to establish a questionnaire for rating impressions of urban green spaces in public offering processes. First, we conducted a qualitative pilot survey collecting 127 items for expressing impressions of urban green spaces selected from recent cases of public offerings in Tokyo. Then, based on the results of two online questionnaires (N = 300 and 100, respectively) and exploratory factor analyses, we identified 22 items classified into 3 factors, such as beautiful sight, unsatisfactory maintenance, and accessibility. General structure of these 3 factors was reproduced by a confirmatory factor analysis, indicating that factors found in this study can be useful for rating impressions of urban green spaces in public offering processes.

Due to global population growth and economic development in emerging countries, worldwide meat demand is increasing. While, livestock farming poses various problems, meat alternatives are attracting increasing attention. There are signs that soy meat is becoming especially popular in Japan, reflecting its long cultural familiarity with soybean-based foods and making it a potential model for the promotion of meat alternatives. This study explored Japanese consumers’ motivators related to eating soy meat using logistic regression analysis to reveal a possible key to expanding the market. The results indicate that enhanced food neophilia, environmental consciousness, convenience, and sensory appeal lead to an increase in the frequency with which soy meat is eaten. Among these factors, convenience and sensory appeal can be managed by food companies. Thus, we expect that the market is likely to grow if food companies promote the convenience and sensory appeal of soy meat to Japanese consumers.

Hot springs are a major attraction for domestic tourists in Japan. Evoking a favorable impression of the experience during the information-gathering stage of travel is important in order to attract prospective tourists. Previous findings have suggested that the photographic presentation of a hot-spring hotel can serve as a medium for hotel managers to attract prospective tourists. In the current online questionnaire study, five hundred and eighteen prospective Japanese tourists were asked to rate their affective reactions, cognitive evaluations, behavioral intentions, and willingness to pay (WTP) for two sets of photographic images representing two hot-spring hotels in Japan with traditional and contemporary designs, respectively. The empirical results suggest that the photographic images reflecting a traditional design generated higher affective reactions, cognitive evaluations, behavioral intentions, and WTP. The findings extend the current knowledge on consumers’ perceptions and behavioral intentions and provide practical implications for hotel managers to promote their services and products.

Among diverse methods for estimating economic values of natural environments, CVM (Contingent Valuation Method) is used in various research projects, including valuations of urban parks. Traditionally, photographs are used in valuations via CVM for explaining valuation targets to participants, followed by questions about WTP (Willingness-to-Pay) values. The number of studies using VR (virtual reality) is increasing, while previous research has not evaluated effects of explanation methods (VR vs. photographs) on WTP values through control experiments. In this study, we evaluated effects of explanation methods (VR vs. photographs) on WTP values of an urban park, while collecting customer loyalty scores (revisit intentions, word-of-mouth intentions), mood measurements (BMC-J), semantic differential method scores, and eye-tracking data. We also evaluated effects of view angles (front views vs. all-round views) on the WTP values and eye-tracking data. We found no difference between explanation methods in WTP values, customer loyalty scores, mood measurements, or eye-tracking data. However, WTP values after showing all-round views were higher than WTP values after showing front views. These findings suggest that, in valuations of urban parks using CVM, there is little advantage of using VR, which is more expensive and harder to use than photographs. Also, it can be important to control view angles. Further research is needed to evaluate effects of VR technology and view angles on WTP values, using CVM for a broad range of urban landscape design and participants with diverse demographic backgrounds.

Objective: In the current study, we explored the neural substrate for acute effects of guanfacine extended release (GXR) on inhibitory control in school-aged children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS).
Methods: Following a GXR washout period, 12 AD HD children (6–10 years old) performed a go/no-go task before and 3 h after GXR or placebo administration, in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover design study. In the primary analysis, fNIRS was used to monitor the right prefrontal cortical hemodynamics of the participants, where our former studies showed consistent dysfunction and osmotic release oral system-methylphenidate (OROS-MPH) and atomoxetine hydrochloride (ATX) elicited recovery. We examined the inter-medication contrast, comparing the effect of GXR against the placebo. In the exploratory analysis, we explored neural responses in regions other than the right prefrontal cortex (PFC).
Results: In the primary analysis, we observed no significant main effects or interactions of medication type and age in month (two-way mixed ANCOVA, Fs &lt; 0.20, all ps &gt; .05). However, in the post-hoc analysis, we observed significant change in the oxy-Hb signal in the right angular gyrus (AG) for inter-medication (one sample t-test, p &lt; 0.05, uncorrected, Cohen's d = 0.71).
Conclusions: These results are different from the neuropharmacological effects of OROS-MPH and ATX, which, in an upregulated manner, reduced right PFC function in ADHD children during inhibitory tasks.
In the midst of globalization, English is regarded as an international language, or Lingua Franca, but learning it as a second language (L2) remains still difficult to speakers of other languages. This is true especially for the speakers of languages distantly related to English such as Japanese. In this sense, exploring neural basis for translation between the first language (L1) and L2 is of great interest. There have been relatively many previous researches revealing brain activation patterns during translations between L1 and English as L2. These studies, which focused on language translation with close or moderate linguistic distance (LD), have suggested that the Broca area (BA 44/45) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC; BA 46) may play an important role on translation. However, the neural mechanism of language translation between Japanese and English, having large LD, has not been clarified. Thus, we used functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate the brain activation patterns during word translation between Japanese and English. We also assessed the effects of translation directions and word familiarity. All participants’ first language was Japanese and they were learning English. Their English proficiency was advanced or elementary. We selected English and Japanese words as stimuli based on the familiarity for Japanese people. Our results showed that the brain activation patterns during word translation largely differed depending on their English proficiency. The advanced group elicited greater activation on the left prefrontal cortex around the Broca’s area while translating words with low familiarity, but no activation was observed while translating words with high familiarity. On the other hand, the elementary group evoked greater activation on the left temporal area including the superior temporal gyrus (STG) irrespective of the word familiarity. These results suggested that different cognitive process could be involved in word translation corresponding to English proficiency in Japanese learners of English. These difference on the brain activation patterns between the advanced and elementary group may reflect the difference on the cognitive loads depending on the levels of automatization in one’s language processing.

Abstract
The 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan was an extraordinarily stressful incident that caused harmful psychological reactions, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), among affected individuals. However, a proportion of exposed individuals experienced posttraumatic growth (PTG), characterized by a noticeable degree of personal strength, spirituality, life appreciation, perception of new possibilities in life, and enhanced relationships with others. Some researchers have argued that these positive reactions may be an illusory change related to coping with traumatic events. We examined trajectory patterns related to PTG Inventory (PTGI) subscales to elucidate the existence of both real and illusory growth regarding quality of life (QoL), utilizing group‐based trajectory models. Three online questionnaires were distributed at 6 months (N = 2,554; M age = 47.04 years, SD = 12.62), 12 months (N = 887; M age = 48.11 years, SD = 12.43), and 42 months (N = 560; M age = 48.86 years, SD = 12.25) postdisaster. Participants responded to items related to demographic characteristics, disaster experiences, posttraumatic stress symptoms, PTG, and QoL. Three main PTG trajectories emerged, characterized by growth, no growth, and illusory growth, with QoL as a time invariant covariate. Compared with the growth trajectory, the odds ratios (ORs) for no growth ranged from 2.27 to 5.04; for illusory growth, the ORs ranged from 2.09 to 4.67. To our knowledge, this was the first study to report growth trajectories related to PTGI subscales and their underlying differences in psychological mechanisms and processes following the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.

A market where the cooking is enjoyed as experiential consumption is being roared. Enjoyment eventually improves quality of life (QOL) via elevated positive feeling. Analogously, it is meaningful to elucidate the cooking-related factors that uplift feeling to enrich the eating habits. In this research, we tried to establish a questionnaire that measures the factors to represent uplifted feelings associated with cooking. First, a qualitative pilot survey was conducted. 104 items related to the uplifted feeling by cooking were collected. Then, 600 participants answered online-questionnaire to quantitatively evaluate the degree of uplifted feelings for each item. Exploratory factor analyses revealed that the items were classified into seven factors: special feeling, cooking characteristics, physical wellness, crowding, amount and stability, rationality, and appearance. Internal consistency for each factor was satisfactory. High convergent validity was indicated based on correlational analyses. These together indicated the factors are adequate to measure uplifted feeling regrading cooking.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are believed to share the symptom of neurocognitive dysfunction in executive functions. Regarding the components of executive functions, however, dysfunction of motor‐response inhibitory control in children with ASD remains unclear. Thus, using functional near‐infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), we investigated whether putative inhibitory brain dysfunctions are applicable to children with ASD by adopting a go/no‐go task, which has robustly evoked activation in typically developing (TD) children but not in ADHD children. Twenty‐four ASD and 24 TD children underwent a go/no‐go task, and their cortical hemodynamics were assessed using fNIRS. Relative to TD participants, ASD participants showed reduced activation in the right inferior frontal gyrus and middle frontal gyrus (IFG/MFG) during go/no‐go tasks. The current finding suggests that hypoactivation in the right IFG/MFG during a go/no‐go task would serve as a potential biomarker for identifying children with ASD.

The domestic food market has grown up to enter maturation stage with extensively diverse segments. In order for a product to survive in this “red-ocean” market, it should have a specific appeal to consumers with various psychological-attitudes. Thus, the current study aimed to segment the Japanese consumers according to their psychographical-characteristics toward foods, and evaluate their effects on the consumption motives of each segmented consumer groups. An on-line questionnaire-based survey targeting on married females revealed four distinct clusters with different food attitudes: 1) spending a lot of money on food 2) saving money and taking simple-food, 3) saving money but enjoying food life, and 4) treasuring time with their family but having simple-food. Further the four consumer groups exhibited different consumption motives on pork employing MANOVA. Based on these results, we suggest that consumer segmentation based on psychographical-characteristics would be valuable approach to produce food marketing strategies.

As the modern food market in Japan becomes highly competitive, there is growing need for differentially marketing products. To this end, a food company is supposed to convey clear characteristics of a product to consumers to facilitate their understanding of the product. Therefore, using an on-line survey, we investigated differences in Japanese consumers' valuation of two food products of the same category (i.e., frozen cooked rice products). We utilized the five scales which evaluate products, and based on multiple regression analyses, we explored value structure to represent consumers' valuation of the two food products. While they are perceived as similar products due to the fact that they hold major positions in the market, there were distinct difference in consumers' valuation of the two food products. We suggest that the current statistical approach to assess consumers' valuation of food products could serve as effective tools for enhancing differentiation of food products.

Postharvest fruits are susceptible to damage which eventually results in large product and financial losses. While abundant studies have been conducted to objectively index the severity of such damage, how consumers subjectively assess the severity of damaged apples has been understudied. Previous studies have indicated that consumers' aesthetic devaluation of product quality is reflected in estimated price. Thus, the current online questionnaire study was conducted to examine the effect of objectively indexed severity of damage on consumers' subjective price estimations. Four hundred thirty-nine consumers of apples were asked to estimate the market price for apples in photographic images of 1 or 3 "Orin" ("Golden Delicious" x "Indo") apples at 9 levels of severity of damage. A 2 (1- and 3-piece) x 9 (severity of damage) within ANCOVA with reference price as a covariate indicated significant two-way interaction between the number of apples and severity of damage on estimated price. Consequently, the 1- and 3-piece conditions were examined separately. The results of both analyses indicate a categorical rather than quantitative, continuous reduction in estimated price.

Abstract
The present study explored the possibility of generating a novel sensory evaluation instrument for describing comprehensive food palatability via its subdomains (rewarding, cultural, and informational) while keeping physiological factors constant. Seventy‐five Japanese participants were asked to taste cheese samples and to respond to a questionnaire that was developed to dissect the distinct subdomains of palatability. The subsequent factor analyses revealed that three major factors may serve as distinct subdomains of palatability: rewarding, cultural, and informational, although the informational factor was not sufficiently robust. Multivariate regression analysis on cheese samples with exactly the same ingredients but sold in different packages led to different comprehensive palatability ratings due to the contribution of the cultural, but not the rewarding, factor. These results suggest that palatability is not merely determined by the physical and chemical properties that are intrinsic to a food product itself, but also depends on psychological properties that can arise through interaction between humans and the food product. The current study presents the first experimental demonstration that palatability could be dissociated to its subdomains.

Several studies have reported that experts outperform novices in specific domains. However, the superiority of experts in accuracy, taking both trueness and precision into consideration, has not yet been explored. Here, we examined differences between expert and novice performances by evaluating the accuracy of their estimations of physical concentrations of sodium chloride in solutions while employing a visual analog scale. In Experiment 1, 14 experts and 13 novices tasted 6 concentrations of the solutions until they had learned their intensities. Subsequently, they repeatedly rated the concentration of 3 other solutions in random order. Although we did not find a difference between the performances of the 2 groups in trueness (difference between rating and correct concentration), the precision (consistency of ratings for each participant) of experts was higher than that of novices. In Experiment 2, 13 experts who had participated in Experiment 1 and 10 experts and 12 novices who had not participated in Experiment 1 rated the salt concentration in sodium chloride/sucrose mixtures in the same way as in Experiment 1. Both trueness and precision of performance were higher in both expert groups than in the novice group. By introducing precision and trueness parameters, we succeeded in quantifying the estimations of experts and novices in rating the concentration of solutions, revealing experts' superiority even for a task they had not been trained for. © The Author 2013.

To investigate the participation of allelopathy in the injury by continuous cropping of soybean, we seeded lettuce in the field where soybean had been cropped for 0, 1, 2, 3 and 5 years, and examined the growth of the lettuce plants. The lettuce growth was inhibited by continuous soybean cultivation and adding activated carbon to the soil alleviated the inhibition. However, the effect of the activated carbon decreased as the duration of continuous cropping increased. Therefore, the growth-inhibitory activity of the soil was considered to increase with increasing duration of the continuous cropping. In the analysis of the root-zone soil, we could not observe any significant differences in pH and nutrient elements, which suggested that the main factor causing injury by continuous soybean cropping might be allelopathy. Hence, we investigated the effect of adding activated carbon to the field where five been cultivars, ‘Tachinagaha’, ‘Enrei’, ‘Tamadaikoku’, ‘Komaki-dadacha’ and ‘Natsunokoe’ had been cultivated continuously. The growth reduction of soybean by continuous cropping of ‘Tachinagaha’, ‘Tamadaikoku’ and ‘Natsunokoe’, was significantly alleviated by the addition of activated carbon.

Six attributes with 2 levels each were chosen and manipulated: price (high compared with low), the country of origin of the soybeans (domestic compared with imported), stickiness (strong compared with moderate), smell (rich compared with moderate), attached seasonings (attached compared with no attached seasonings), and the environmental friendliness of the packaging (high compared with low). A fractional factorial design was applied and 8 hypothetical product labels were produced. A sample of 479 Japanese housewives ranked these product labels based on their purchase intentions. Overall purchase intention was affected by country of origin, attached seasonings, and price; those attributes accounted for 81.0%, while the sensory attributes of the product accounted for 19.0% of purchase intents. Purple asparagus is becoming popular among consumers in Japan because of its unique appearance, thickness, sweetness, tenderness of the spears, and quality of vitamins and minerals. The growing area for purple varieties such as ‘Purple Passion’ is spreading, particularly in cool regions of Japan. However, lower yields compared to those of major green varieties have been regarded as a serious problem. Therefore, some growers hesitate to cultivate the purple varieties. In order to improve the yield of ‘Purple Passion’, we investigated the effect of high density planting on mother fern cultivation between 1999 and 2005. The yield of plots with a normal planting of ‘Purple Passion’ was lower than that of ‘UC157’ which is a green asparagus variety cultured in Japan. However, the yield of ‘Purple Passion’ in the plot with dense planting showed yields as high as those with normal planting of ‘UC157’. The spear weight of ‘Purple Passion’ in all treatments was larger than that of ‘UC157’, although the number of harvested spears of ‘Purple Passion’ per unit area was decreased compared to that from a normal planting of ‘UC157’. This advantage might contribute to labor-saving. These findings suggest that ‘Purple Passion’ can achieve a sufficient yield when cultivated by dense planting. The aptitude for dense planting and its unique properties are key factors in achieving stable cultivation and promoting the consumption of purple varieties in Japan.<br>

The effects of storage temperature (5°C, 10°C, and 15°C) on the appearance, weight, and ascorbic acid content of 3 asparagus cultivars—‘UC157’, ‘Gijnlim’, and ‘Purple Passion’—cultivated as green asparagus in open fields were investigated over a 4-day storage period. In addition, we investigated the respiration rate (CO2 production rate), which is closely related to the qualitative deterioration of fresh produce. Among the 3 cultivars, ‘Gijnlim’ had the loosest spear-head and the highest ascorbic acid content immediately after harvest. The extent of opening of the spear-head during the 4-day storage period varied among the cultivars, and was most marked in ‘Gijnlim’ and was least in ‘Purple Passion’. Discoloration of the cut end of the spear was found to be dependent upon the storage temperature to a greater extent than the individual cultivars. ‘Gijnlim’ had marked discoloration at 10°C. Moreover, ‘Gijnlim’ had the largest decline in weight among the 3 cultivars at each of the 3 temperatures examined. A similar tendency was observed in the decline in ascorbic acid content. The respiration rate of ‘Purple Passion’ within 2–8 h after harvest tended to be smaller than that of ‘UC157’ and ‘Gijnlim’. These findings suggested that there are differences among the cultivars with respect to the rates of changes in postharvest quality. ‘Gijnlim’ tended to deteriorate faster than ‘UC157’ and ‘Purple Passion’, suggesting that strict temperature control and/or packaging might be required to maintain the quality of ‘Gijnlim’ harvested in the spring.<br>

Objective: To evaluate psychometric properties and comparability ability of the Montgomery-Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) vs. the Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology-Clinician-rated (QIDS-C16) and Self-report (QIDS-SR16) scales to detect a current major depressive episode in the elderly. Method: Community and clinic subjects (age ≥60 years) were administered the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) for DSM-IV and three depression scales randomly. Statistics included classical test and Samejima item response theories, factor analyzes, and receiver operating characteristic methods. Results: In 229 elderly patients (mean age = 73 years, 39% male, 54% current depression), all three scales were unidimensional and with nearly equal Cronbach α reliability (0.85-0.89). Each scale discriminated persons with major depression from the non-depressed, but the QIDS-C 16 was slightly more accurate. Conclusion: All three tests are valid for detecting geriatric major depression with the QIDS-C16 being slightly better. Self-rated QIDS-SR16 is recommended as a screening tool as it is least expensive and least time consuming. © 2010 John Wiley & Sons A/S.

The clinician-rated, 16-item Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-C16) has been extensively evaluated in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This report assesses the psychometric properties of the QIDS-C16 in outpatients with bipolar disorder (BD, N = 405) and MDD (N = 547) and in bipolar patients in the depressed phase only (BD-D) (N = 99) enrolled in the Texas Medication Algorithm Project (TMAP) using classical test theory (CTT) and the Samejima graded item response theory (IRT) model. Values of coefficient alpha were very similar in BD, MDD, and BD-D groups at baseline (α = 0.80-0.81) and at exit (α = 0.82-0.85). The QIDS-C16 was unidimensional for all three groups. MDD and BD-D patients (n = 99) had comparable symptom levels. The BD-D patients (n = 99) had the most, and bipolar patients in the manic phase had the least depressive symptoms at baseline. IRT analyses indicated that the QIDS-C16 was most sensitive to the measurement of depression for both MDD patients and for BD-D patients in the average range. The QIDS-C16 is suitable for use with patients with BD and can be used as an outcome measure in trials enrolling both BD and MDD patients. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Based on the model that the researchers in this project, we aimed to enhance quality of life (QoL) through improvements in Posttraumatic growth (PTG) following the potentially traumtic event (PTE). In 2017 and 2018, we found the existence of illusory PTG group by examining PTG trajectory patterns. In 2019, we also found that illusory PTG menbership is associated with lowered state of QoL. In 2020, we published the findings above in Journal of Traumatic Stress. Finally, we developed a method to predict illusory PTG trajectory membership. These findings contributed to find out existence of multiple PTG trajectory patterns and its relationship with QoL. Also, the findings suggested the importance of eraly intervention.

A huge complex disaster such as 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami evokes large stress among victims. Well known psychological reactions include posttraumatic stress (PTS) and posttraumatic growth (PTG). In the current study, we examined the following three research topics using online questionnaire. First, the current longitudinal study replicated the psychological adjustment model established in seeds study where cross-sectional design was used. Second, we identified the PTS vulnerable group and its correlated variable such as daily dysfunction prolonged more than three months. Finally, we found that different pattern of relationship between PTS and PTG would be captured depending on duration between the measurements.

It is difficult to define damage to fresh produce compared to damage to industrial products. We consider the purchasing behaviour of consumers, such as whether they would like to purchase a fresh produce product, in defining damage to fresh produce. Thus, this study, which uses apples as the fresh product, surveyed the relationship between the damaged areas resulting from several shock conditions and the price that consumers thought reasonable. The results showed that the price that the consumers judged to be reasonable did not change markedly even if the damage area increased to a certain degree. This finding contributes to optimizing cushioning packaging and/or to establishing a reasonable price for fresh produce.

The subjective quality of life regarding food (Food QoL) is not met in developed countries. In the current project, the combination of psychometric measurements and multivariate analyses were devised to gain insights to improve Food QoL among Japanese.
The first phase of the current project started in 2011 when psychometric properties of the questionnaires were examined. Using the questionnaires in conjunction with multivariate analyses made it possible to probe the discrepancy between desirable meals and actual consumed ones. Then, the association among the desirable and actual meal properties, and Food QoL were quantitatively modeled. Further, the devised methods were applied to model QoL including food life after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, to model consumers’ loyalty to a restaurant menu, to model conceptualization of cooking, to evaluate the appearance of a restaurant before and after renovation, and to model consumers’evaluation of hot spring locations.
