    Monitoring of the wave run-up heights on beaches becomes a useful tool in the analysis of shore protection. However, there is no method appropriate for long-term monitoring. Wave run-up height increases when a steep profile is formed due to offshore sand transport after the action of storm waves. Thus, the understanding of the topographic changes near the shoreline is important in coastal protection. A method to estimate the change in longitudinal profile below the mean sea level from the wave run-up height was proposed in this method using an image analysis taking the Chigasaki coast as an example. When comparing the wave run-up height under the condition with similar wave conditions, the run-up height decreased by 1.2 m after the condition that the trough was refilled, whereas it increased by 1.0 m when a trough was formed. The wave run-up height obtained by image analysis showed the same characteristics of that estimated from the longitudinal profile of the beach. It was concluded that the present method is effective for estimating the change in longitudinal profile near the shoreline from the wave run-up height.

    <jats:p>There are from 2,000 to 3,000 rescues every summer at bathing beaches in Japan, and the main cause of drowning accidents is rip currents. To analyze the rip current, a method for visualizing rip currents with average images can be used. However, in case of the investigation over a long period, such as several months, it is necessary to confirm the occurrence of rip currents through thousands of averaged images by human eyes. In this study, we suggested a new method for detecting the occurrence of rip currents automatically by analyzing the pixel values of averaged images. Images for the analysis were created from video data recorded in March and April 2021 by a camera overviewing the study beach located on the west coast of Japan. The accuracy results of this method were 99 percent for the validation dataset and 57 percent for the verification dataset, respectively. When the wave height was 0.5 m and higher for the verification dataset, the accuracy was 75percent. Therefore, it was considered that this method can detect the occurrence of rip currents when the wave height is 0.5 m and higher. As a result of applying this method to the 3-month image data recorded from October to December 2021, it was found that wave steepness was occurring lower under the conditions of rip currents. In conclusion, this method was able to automatically detect the rip currents from the images, and the conditions of waves when the rip currents that occurred could be investigated using this method.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>In Japan, 2,000 to 3,000 drowning accidents occur every summer season at major bathing beaches. In order to prevent drowning accidents, beachgoers themselves need to be aware of the dangers and avoid them. As a way to do this, bathing beaches provide daily risk levels regarding swimming conditions to beachgoers using three levels of beach safety flags. However, the risk levels are determined subjectively and empirically by lifesavers and beach administrators based on weather and sea conditions. The characteristics of past drowning accidents are not taken into account. In this study, we suggest an objective method of determining the risk levels based on the probability of drowning accidents. We have created an AI model that can predict the probability of drowning accidents with high accuracy using a total of 53 features such as usage, weather and sea conditions of a study beach in Japan. This method enables appropriate judgment of swimming conditions to prevent many drowning accidents. The reliability of the model was examined using XAI, and it was found that time series of rescue factors were important in predictions. On the other hand, the accuracy decreased when the created AI model was applied to other beaches. It was thought to be caused by differences in the natural environment such as waves and wind.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>Beach topography quickly responds to the action of storm waves, resulting in foreshore erosion and accretion under calm wave conditions after a storm. Field observations were carried out on the Chigasaki coast to investigate these beach changes. It was found that the seabed shallower than 3 m depth was rapidly eroded by offshore sand transport during a storm event with the deposition of sand in a zone at depths between 3 and 5 m, and then the beach recovered within 1–2 years after the storm. Topographic changes immediately after the storm and subsequent recovery under calm wave conditions were calculated using the BG model (a model for predicting three-dimensional beach changes based on Bagnold’s concept). Given the equilibrium slope of fine sand d1 and medium-size sand d2 to be 1/120 during high waves, the erosion of the foreshore zone was numerically reproduced. Moreover, the recovery of the beach topography to a gentle slope under calm wave conditions after the storm was successfully reproduced.</jats:p>

    The occurrence of drowning accidents on the beaches is mainly caused by rip currents. In this study, we created an AI model that can detect rip currents in Yuigahama beach. As a result of creating the AI model under various conditions, the accuracy, the precision and the recall rates of the rip current detection were 88 %, 17 % and 100 %, respectively at the final point. As a result of actually operating this AI model on the study beach during summer season, except for stormy wave conditions caused by typhoons, the number of detected rip currents tended in the center of the pocket beach to increase with the wave height and wave energy flux. Also, the number of detected rip currents was 10 % or less per hour in most cases. In these cases, because the wave height and the wave energy flux were relatively small, it was considered that flash rip currents occur on the study beach even under calm wave conditions.

    <jats:p>Beach topography quickly changes in response to the action of storm waves, resulting in erosion of the foreshore with accretion under a calm wave condition after a storm. These seasonal beach changes may occur on beaches with protective measures or artificial beaches produced by beach nourishment. On these beaches, the shore protection function of a sandy beach is reduced when a trough is formed immediately offshore of the shoreline and the foreshore slope increases, indicating the importance of the study on topographic changes. Moreover, the time required for a beach recovery in response to wave conditions has not been sufficiently studied, along with the 3-D topographic changes associated with beach cycles. In this study, we aim to investigate these issues using the Narrow Multi-Beam survey data, wave data, and seabed materials data, taking the Chigasaki coast as an example. It was found that a seabed shallower than 2 and 3 m depths was eroded by rapid offshore sand transport during a storm event with the deposition of sand in a zone between 3 and 5 m depths, and then the beach recovered within 1-2 years after the storm. It was also confirmed that a bar and trough disappeared in 1-2 months under the conditions of HE = 0.5 m, TE = 8 s, and H/L = 0.005 when the crown depth of the bar was smaller than approximately 2 m.     In Japan, the main cause of drowning accidents are rip currents which account for more than 40 percent of the natural factors of drowning. This is because almost all beach users cannot recognize the rip current areas. On the other hand, an analysis of image averaging using consecutive photo data can research the rip current over a long period of time, but it requires a huge amount of image data. A suitable analysis period of time required for detecting the rip current, however, has not been studied. This study aims to investigate this. As a result, in case of H1/3=0.7 m, T1/3=6.6 s, H1/3=0.5 m, T1/3=7.4 s, H1/3=0.6 m, T1/3=6.9 s, it was found that an analysis period of 1, 2, 3 and 4 minutes was suitable for detecting the flash rip current. In addition, that of 15, 25, 30, 40 and 80 minutes was suitable for detecting the fixed rip current.

    In Japan, there are many beaches which are supervised by lifesavers. However, it is difficult to prevent drowning accidents completely because the number of lifesavers is small at around 1 lifesaver compared to the thousands of beach users. In order to prevent drowning accidents, flexible changing of monitoring systems by lifesavers depending on the number of beach users is required. On the other hand, the main factor of outbreak drowning is the rip current, however, the relationship between an increase or decrease in the number of beach users and their entering the rip current areas that cause drowning accidents is not investigated. In this study, we calculated the number of beach users using AI from beach images of fixed-point shooting and, revealed that the relationship between fluctuations in the number of beach users and probability of their entering rip currents areas.

    The rip current is a main cause of drowning accidents in Japan. To prevent drowning accidents, lifesavers detect the rip current, and give a caution to beach users. However, rip current accidents are not prevented completely because of not only difficulty of finding rip currents, but also the lack number of lifesavers compared with total number of beach users. Therefore, it is highly important to estimate in advance the occurrence of rip current accidents. In this study, we studied outbreak factors of rip current accidents at Onjuku beach using the statistical analysis. As a result, the rip current accident happened in following conditions; Fine whether, a large number of beach users, the sea condition is not so good for a sea bathing, the wave height is from 1.5 to 2 m, the wave period is from 10 to 11 s, and the wave direction is between S and SE according to data from the Japan Meteorological Agency.

    <jats:p>On the Shonan coast facing Sagami Bay, part of the nourishment sand was considered to be transported offshore, devaluing the effect of beach nourishment. Beach changes after the beach nourishment were investigated using the Narrow Multi-Beam survey data, which have been collected since 2002. Analysis of the sand volume and grain size composition in the subareas showed that the effect of the beach nourishment on the deposition of fine sediment in the offshore zone was negligible, and that the fine material in the offshore zone was mainly brought from the erosion of the river mouth terrace.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>The closure mechanism of the mouth of a floodway owing to the deposition of gravel by waves was investigated, taking the Shin-nakagawa floodway flowing into the Fuji coast as an example. A movable bed experiment with a model scale of 1/50 using a two-dimensional wave channel was carried out, while changing the discharge of the floodway. It was found that the berm height and foreshore slope were reduced owing to the filtration flow on the gravel beach. A model for predicting beach changes with filtration flow based on the contour-line-change model was proposed. The effect of the filtration flow on the cross-shore sand transport was incorporated in the model, and the calculation results were in good agreement with the experimental results.</jats:p>

The characteristics of rip current drowning on the shores of Japan was investigated using the analysis of the lifesaver's rescue reports of 2013 and field observations of some beaches. Although the necessary rescue equipment and the water safety information such as signboards were mostly prepared, a large amount of rip current drowning occurred. On most re-occurring rip current drowning beaches, there are permanent rips and fixed rips associated with the characteristic of topography and the coastal structures at most beaches under the relatively high wave condition. Especially, in the case lifesavers cannot determine the swimming areas, swimming areas are generally determined by the local regulations from local governments and shop owners on most beaches.     <jats:p>The concept of the moving gravel body (MGB) method, in which topographic changes are controlled by beach nourishment using gravel, was introduced, using the contour-line-change model considering changes in grain size. The model was applied to the Fuji coast, assuming that coarse materials were nourished on a straight coast wherein a predominant longshore sand transport develops. The grain size that is effective for the recovery and maintenance of the shoreline and that does not cause further downcoast erosion was d, which is 5-10 times larger than that of the original sand, d0.</jats:p>

    <jats:p>Several submarine canyons have developed offshore of the Aramata region of the Shimoni-ikawa coast in Toyama Bay, which is one of the three deep bays in Japan. The Kurobe River with a steep bed slope flows into the sea immediately north of this region, and a large amount of sediment has been supplied to this area, which has been transported by southward longshore sand transport. However, beach erosion has occurred owing to the decrease in sediment supply from the Kurobe River. Furthermore, since the construction of detached breakwaters as a measure against beach erosion, offshore sand transport has accelerated and beach erosion has become more severe. In this study, aerial photographs and bathymetric survey data were analyzed, then the mechanism of offshore sand transport was investigated using the BG model proposed by Serizawa et al. (2007).</jats:p>

    Method controlling the diffusion of gravel in foreshore nourishment using short groins and small-scale detached breakwaters were investigated, taking into consideration the fact that the gravel movement concentrates on the foreshore. When beach material composed of mixed grain sizes is nourished on the foreshore, the discharge of the gravel component may be reduced when these structures are installed, while supplying fine sediment to downcoast. The mechanism was investigated using the contour-line-change model considering the change in grain size under the conditions beach nourishment is carried out on a dynamically equilibrium beach with a constant longshore sand transport.

    <jats:p>Some 1.1 km of the Seisho Bypass along the Seisho coast was severely damaged on September 7, 2007, due to Typhoon 0709 storm waves, closing the road to traffic for emergency repairs. Damage to the highway, caused primarily through wave impact and secondarily by long-term shoreline recession due to decreased fluvial sand supply from the Sakawa River and sand loss into a submarine canyon, was investigated through field observations. A factor contributing further to shoreline recession was the obstruction of eastward longshore sand transport by the Ninomiya fishing port breakwater. Storm waves hit the coastline counterclockwise to normal to the shoreline, causing offshore and westward longshore sand transport with part of the sand transported by the longshore sand transport flowing into the submarine canyon, causing a net sand loss.</jats:p>

    Coastal characteristics of the construction site of Hitachi Bypass Road were investigated by using aerial photographs and topographic chart as well as field observation of the coastline. Existing seawall of the reclaimed land, where a new road is constructed, was found to be damaged by wave action because of protrusion of this seawall into the sea. Causes of the failure of this structure were studied to obtain useful information for the planning of the new road.
