    本年度は,始新統音無川層群の生痕化石群集の記載,および露頭画像から生痕化石の領域を自動抽出し,生物撹拌強度を推定する手法の構築,の2つのテーマに取り組んだ.昨年度の研究によって,白亜紀の海底扇状地堆積物の生痕化石群集は,分類群組成や生物撹拌強度の点で一般的な生痕化石相モデルと異なることが判明した.そこで,本年度は新生代の生痕化石群集の例として,紀伊半島南西部に分布する始新統音無川層群を対象とし,堆積環境を復元して生痕化石群集を記載した.調査地域には,音無川層群瓜谷層の最上部と羽六層の下部が露出する.堆積相の特徴から,瓜谷層は堆積盆底堆積物,羽六層は海底扇状地のフロンタルスプレイ下流部から分流チャネルを伴う上流部の堆積物と解釈された.瓜谷層からは体幅1 cm程度の堆積物食者による摂食痕が産出した.一方,羽六層の最下部からは体幅数mm程度の底生動物による多様な形態の摂食痕,居住痕からなる生痕化石群集が産出した.また,調査層準上部からは甲殻類の巣穴化石が多産し,生物撹拌強度も非常に高かった.この生痕化石相の違いは,堆積環境変化に伴う物理的撹乱の頻度の変化に対する底生動物群集の応答を反映した可能性がある.
    また,露頭画像からの生痕化石の自動抽出モデルを畳み込みニューラルネットワークを用いて構築し,生物撹拌強度の推定に援用する方法を提案した.教師および検証データには国際深海科学掘削計画により公開されているインド洋の中新世の海底扇状地堆積物のコア画像を用いた.自動抽出モデルとして畳み込み層を8層もつU-Netを作成した.このモデルにコア画像と手動で生痕化石を抽出した画像との関係を学習させたところ,未知のデータに対して約88%の精度で生痕化石を分類するモデルが生成された.今後,このモデルにより大量の生物撹拌強度のデータを収集可能になり,生物撹拌強度変動の一般的傾向の解明が期待される.
