    Granger causality is a classical and important technique for measuring predictability from one group of time series to another by incorporating information of the variables described by a full vector autoregressive (VAR) process. However, in some applications economic forecasts need to be made based on information provided merely by a portion of variates (e.g., removal of a listed stock due to halting, suspension or delisting). This requires a new formulation of forecast based on an embedded subprocess of VAR, whose theoretical properties are often difficult to obtain. To avoid the issue of identifying the VAR subprocess, we propose a computation‐based approach so that sophisticated predictions can be made by utilizing a reduced variable information set estimated from sampled data. Such estimated information set allows us to develop a suitable statistical hypothesis testing procedure for characterizing all designated Granger causal relationships, as well as a useful graphical tool for presenting the causal structure over the prediction horizon. Finally, simulated data and a real example from the stock markets are used to illustrate the proposed method.

    Citation plays an important role in the bibliometrics analysis since the introduction of the impact factors, but traditional measures mainly focused on the direct citations between articles. In this work, we introduce a new metric, namely Article Network Influence (ANI), to measure the influence of an article by using broader citation elationships quantitatively. We prepare our article citation networks from one of the largest citation databases called the Web of Science, and we demonstrate the se of ANI on the analysis of these networks in the statistics research community. These analyses appear in the top-20 influential articles in statistics within every 11 years during 1981-2016. We consider differences between the new metric and several traditional measures, including the impact factor, PageRank, and Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI).

    We examined the characteristics of spontaneous movements at 9–20 weeks postterm age in very low birth-weight infants who later developed autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We analyzed video recordings of spontaneous movements of 39 children who had no clinical issues [typically developing (TD) group], 21 children who showed developmental delay, and 14 children who were diagnosed with ASD (ASD group) at 6 years of age. Head position in each video frame was classified by visual inspection. The percentage of midline head position (PMHP) and number of changes in head position were calculated. Spontaneous limb movements were quantified using six indices. The values of PMHP were significantly lower in the ASD group than in the TD group. The lower PMHP during early infancy is associated with later development of ASD. Poorer performance in maintaining midline position of the head at this period may distinguish infants who later develop ASD from those who show TD.

    The 18-year time-series shows in situ ultraviolet radiation (UVR) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) diffuse attenuation coefficient K-d(lambda) have recurrent seasonal variability of high/low attenuation during summer/winter months, respectively, dependent on variability in water column stratification and concentrations of bio-optical properties. The mid-latitude coastal survey station displayed significant seasonality of the mixed layer depth (MLD) between 12 and 82 m which modified the distribution of chlorophyll a (4.6-24.9 mg m(-2)) and absorption of colored dissolved organic matter [a(CDOM)(320 nm) 0.043-134 m(-1)]. The median K-d(320 nm) displayed significant seasonality at 0.19 -0.74 m(-1) (C.V. = 44.1%) and seasonal variability within the euphotic layer [Z(10%)(320 nm) = 7-20%]. High attenuation of UVR with relatively moderate attenuation of PAR was consistently observed during the summer months when increased concentrations of terrestrially derived CDOM coupled with a shallow MLD were present. The winter season showed the opposite of low UVR and PAR attenuation due to a relatively deeper MLD coupled with low concentrations of bio-optical properties. Although the long term K-d(lambda) did not vary significantly during the time-series, analysis of the interannual variability suggests there are positive and negative phases following the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) vis-a-vis variability in bio-optical properties (p < 0.001).     Nowadays, "big data" are almost automatically assembled and stored in all fields of human activities beacuse of the development of computation and communication technologies. Although the importance of utilizing "big data" and some examples describing the final results of their success are given in various books and references, details of the analysys processes are not easily accessible. This paper describes details of analysing "big data" given from an internet golf goods shopping site. We use interactive graphics and graph visualization software for analysing them and show the usefulness of these techniques.

    Symbolic data analysis (SDA) has gained popularity over the past few years because of its potential for handling data having a dependent and hierarchical nature. Amongst many methods for analyzing symbolic data, exploratory data analysis (EDA: Tukey, 1977) with graphical presentation is an important one. Recent developments of graphical and visualization tools for SDA include zoom star, closed shapes, and parallel-coordinate-plots. Other studies project high dimensional symbolic data into lower dimensional spaces using symbolic data versions of principal component analysis, multidimensional scaling, and self-organizing maps. Most graphical and visualization approaches for exploring symbolic data structure inherit the advantages of their counterparts for conventional (non-symbolic) data, but also their disadvantages. Here we introduce matrix visualization (MV) for visualizing and clustering symbolic data using interval-valued symbolic data as an example; it is by far the most popular symbolic data type in the literature and the most commonly encountered one in practice. Many MV techniques for visualizing and clustering conventional data are converted to symbolic data, and several techniques are newly developed for symbolic data. Various examples of data with simple to complex structures are brought in to illustrate the proposed methods. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

    Background: Assessment of spontaneous movements in infants has been a powerful predictor of cerebral palsy (CP). Recent advancements on computer-based video analysis can provide detailed information about the properties of spontaneous movements.
    Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between spontaneous movements of the 4 limbs at term age and the development of CP at 3 years of age by using a computer-based video analysis system.
    Study design and subjects: We analyzed video recordings of spontaneous movements at 36-44 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) for 145 preterm infants who were born preterm (22-36 weeks PMA with birthweights of 460-1498 g). Sixteen of the infants developed CP by 3 years of age, while 129 developed normally. We compared 6 movement indices calculated from 2-dimensional trajectories of all limbs between the 2 groups.
    Results: We found that the indices of jerkiness were higher in the CP group than in the normal group (p &lt; 0.1 for arms and p &lt; 0.01 for legs). No decline was observed in the average velocity and number of movement units in the CP group compared with to the normal group.
    Conclusions: Jerkiness of spontaneous movements at term age provides additional information for predicting CP in infants born preterm. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.

    AIM The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of spontaneous movements in preterm infants at term age and developmental delay at 3 years of age.
    METHOD We analysed video recordings of the spontaneous movements in the supine position of 124 preterm infants (44 males, 80 females) at 36 to 44 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA). The infants were born preterm (22-36wks PMA; birthweight 489-1696g) and had not received a diagnosis of a neurological or developmental disorder by the age of 3 years. The recorded spontaneous movements were quantified using six movement indices, which were calculated from two-dimensional trajectories of all limbs. The infants were divided into three developmental groups, normal, borderline, or delayed, based on their developmental quotient as calculated using the Kyoto Scale of Psychological Development 2001 (Kyoto Scale) at 3 years of age. Group differences in the movement indices were analysed.
    RESULTS In the delayed group, average velocity of arms and legs were significantly lower (p&lt;0.05 and p&lt;0.01 respectively), the numbers of movement units of arms and legs were significantly lower (p&lt;0.05 and p&lt;0.01 respectively), kurtosis of acceleration of arms and legs was significantly higher (p&lt;0.05 in each case), and correlation between limb velocities was higher (p&lt;0.05) than in the normal group.
    INTERPRETATION In children who exhibited developmental delay at 3 years of age, the spontaneous movements at term age can be described as less active with intermittent occurrences of abrupt and synchronized movements of the limbs. Recognition of these characteristics of spontaneous movements at term age may be used as a predictor for subsequent cognitive and behavioural development in preterm infants.

    Modern statistical data analysis often requires powerful computers. Parallel computing is a technique to realize such a computer system. Although many "low-level" software technologies for parallel computing have been developed, they are not easy to use for statisticians who are accustomed to "high-level" statistical languages. In this paper, we describe high-level parallel computing functions in a statistical analysis system called Jasp. We implemented them mainly considering ease of use.

    [Purpose] In this study, we quantitatively evaluated how the positioning program influenced the movement patterns of preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). [Subjects and Methods] Spontaneous movements of 12 low-risk preterm infants were video-recorded at 38 or 39 postmenstrual weeks of age (PMA). Six of them (positioning group) received a positioning program from birth to 35-36 weeks of PMA while the other 6 (non-positioning group) did not. We attached reflective markers on the infant's wrists and ankles in the supine position and filmed them from above. By using a two-dimensional image analysis system, we digitized the wrist and ankle trajectories and analyzed the data by calculating several statistics. [Results] Infants in the positioning group brought their hands to the midline or crossed their hands over the midline and showed more variation in velocity of movements than those in the nonpositioning group. We also noticed that infants in the positioning group exhibited and maintained a movement pattern similar to that of full-term infants at 1 month after the positioning program was terminated. [Conclusions] These results suggest that appropriate positioning of preterm infants facilitates flexion posture and movement patterns toward the centre of the body similar to foetuses in the uterus.

    In this paper, we introduce the notion of M-decomposability of probability density functions in one dimension. Using M-decomposability, we derive an inequality that applies to all symmetric unimodal densities. Our inequality involves only the standard deviation of the densities concerned. The concept of M-decomposability can be used as a non-parametric criterion for mode-finding and cluster analysis.

    Statistical models consist of mathematical expressions and algorithms. In a statistical system, such models are described in a statistical language. Therefore, a statistical language is useful if it can handle mathematical equations directly and connect them with algorithms seamlessly. This ability enables users to write and read programs intuitively and easily.     We propose to extend traditional 2 dimensional (21)) Parallel Coordinates plot (PCP) to the one in 3 dimensional (31)) space for showing relationships among many variables intuitively. We also illustrate that 3D PCP can be used for variable selection. In 2D PCP, we often use a brushing operation to sweep from small values to large values of one reference variable. This operation makes the relationships among the reference variable and other variables clear by using time axis. Our basic idea is to use spatial 3rd orthogonal axis instead of time. We locate line segments which show observations with respect to the values of a selected reference variable in 3D space. We show some rearrangements of order and directions of axes are useful to see the similarity between the reference variable and other variables clearly, so it can be used in the first step of variable selection. We also propose to divide values of one variable into several intervals and perform ordering with respect to the reference variable within each interval. This operation is useful to show non-linear interaction by two variables to the reference variable.

    Jasp is an experimental general purpose Java-based statistical system which adopts several new computing technologies. It has a function-based and object-oriented language, an advanced user interface, flexible extensibility and a server/client architecture with distributed computing abilities. DAVIS is, on the other hand, a stand-alone Java-based system, and is designed for providing advanced data visualization functions with easy operations by a GUI. In this paper, it is made possible to use tools of DAVIS from within Jasp, in order that the new integrated system can handle not only data filtering and statistical analysis but also data visualization. We develop a mechanism for extending the server/client system of Jasp to realize an efficient collaboration with DAVIS in the client-side. It is shown that the mechanism is straightforward and simple.

    A statistical system needs to be able to work with other systems in a flexible way and be easily extensible, because no one statistical system can implement all the features required by a wide variety of users. Recently, new ways of extending statistical systems have been brought about by the rapid development of software technologies, including the Java language. In this paper, we propose the use of several Java language techniques for realizing extensions of Jasp, a Java-based statistical system, and demonstrate three practical features of these extensions. The first practical feature is demonstrated in the ability to handle extensible Markup Language (XML) documents, which are the standard format for data transmission on the WWW. The second practical feature is the use of the Component Object Model (COM) interface of Microsoft Windows for communication, e.g., with Microsoft Excel. The third practical feature is the sharing of program resources from other statistical software products, and to perform this task we have extended Jasp by using a translator to execute functions written in the XploRe language.

    In this paper, we propose the use of the server/client system in statistical analysis. We show that the interactive response speed of a time series analysis system TISAS (Time Series Analysis Supporting system) has been improved by adding functions for distributed processing by using the Parallel Virtual Machine (PVM) library. TISAS was originally designed for building an object-based graphical user interface (GUI). The Tcl/Tk interpreter language was chosen as the main programming language, because it was designed especially for building GUI applications easily. We reconstruct TISAS by adopting a server/client system structure without changing the style of the GUI by using TkPVM, which is an implementation of the PVM library through Tcl/Tk.

    This paper describes the language for a statistical system named Jasp (JAva based Statistical Processor). Even if a statistical system has an advanced graphical user interface for operations, a language for it is still important in order to have complete control of it. The language is also used to implement new statistical procedures that are not realized in the system. For simplifying these, the Jasp language is designed as a procedural function-based scripting language especially for statistical analysis. The language, at the same time, can treat class-based objects for gathering related functions without difficulty. In addition, it can "glue" Java classes and routines written in native languages, and make them available simply.

    Nowadays a graphical user interface (GUI) is popular because it is easy and intuitive to use. A character user interface (CUI) is, however, still important for providing access to the full power of the system. A CUI allows users to write statistical programs to perform complicated analyses that are not realized in the built-in functions of the system. In this article, therefore, we insist on the significance of a "mixed user interface"' for utilizing both a GUI and a CUI together in a statistical system. We discuss the characteristics required for a mixed user interface, and describe its implementation in the statistical system Jasp (Java based statistical processor). Jasp is written in the Java language and adopts many recently developed computer technologies. We have designed the GUI and the CUI to be used independently: but able to be selected seamlessly and alternatively depending on the user's purposes and levels of expertise with the system.

    We propose a graphical user interface (GUI) of a statistical system largely based on direct icon operations. Our GUI adopts an object-oriented approach to represent data, statistics and models as instance objects and to depict them as icons on the screen, arranged as a tree to clearly record the history of one data analysis session. When we point at an icon that represents an object we wish to manipulate, a pop-up menu, whose items are statistical procedures available for the object, appears. Selecting an appropriate procedure produces a new object and an icon on the screen to record the process of the analysis. As we can perform all statistical analyses on the tree of icons visually, by following situation-sensitive menus and using simple mouse operations, our GUI is easy to use for many novice users and is useful for preventing the trivial misuse of statistical procedures. We implemented a prototype of the proposed GUI for a time series analysis system named TISAS.

    As computing technologies have been developed rapidly and continuously, statistical languages should be frequently improved by adopting them for realizing comfortable statistical environments. Although that work was a difficult task before, we can implement such languages easily by modern software techniques such as the Java language, which unifies recent computer technologies widely and neatly. In this paper, we describe the idea of a new Jasp (JAva based Statistical Processor) language, which is a function-based and object-oriented language, is suitable for interactive operation, and has fiexibilities and diverse extensibilities. Considering required characteristics for a statistical language, we decide to implement the Jasp language by Java technologies through the Pnuts language, which is a script language written in Java, and a preprocessing approach. This implementation brings several advantages such as reduction of development costs, effective uses of existing resources, and adequate reliabilities.

    This paper describes the procedure of testing the presence of a feedback loop for a scalar discrete dynamic stochastic system.<br>Box and Jenkins proposed a stochastic model for open-loop systems. They employed a transfer function model to describe the dynamics between the input and the output, and an autoregressive moving average model to characterize the input and the disturbance. They also obtained an identification and estimation method. But their method leads to inappropriate estimates if the generating process is a closed-loop system whose input is written as a linear combination of the output. Therefore, at the first stage of the data analysis, the existence of the closed-loop should be tested.<br>For that purpose, we use the portmanteaulike statistic, which is constructed from the input and the output prewhitened by an autoregressive model fitting with the FPE criterion. This statistic is shown to be asymptotically distributed according to the χ2 distribution of certain degrees of freedom. The test procedure is derived from this result. Two real data are analysed to demonstrate the usefulness of the present method.

    Jasp is a general purpose statistical system, which has been developed by using Java technologies. We have implemented data mining methods on it, by importing well-known data mining Java class library Weka and combining it in Jasp language. This approach can shorten the time of implementation work, keep consistency of the system, and make it easy to collaborate with other Jasp functions. Users can cleanse a dataset, make several graphs of the dataset by Jasp statistical functions, and apply data mining algorithms such as C4.5, PRISM, support vector machine, APRIORI, K-Means, by Weka functions. This version of Jasp is freely available from http://jasp.ism.ac.jp/.

    We have developed a multiple regression analysis supporting system named RASS2. The aim of the system is to provide consulting mechanisms with high flexibility and extendibility to users. RASS2 is constructed with original objects as its basic components. Objects in RASS2 are extended objects, which include rules for representing knowledge of regression analysis techniques. Rules are described within the class definition. Each object suggests the best procedure according to the state of the analysis and negotiates with other object to resolve conflicts among their suggestions. Users can follow the suggestion or can execute other procedures. Compared with the earlier version of RASS, the objects make the system structure simple and modifications of statistical knowledge embedded in the system easy.

    A language is one of the fundamental bases of a statistical system. We design and implement a language for our statistical system Jasp to realize simple and intuitive syntax, easy interactive operation, advanced GUI and quick accessibility to all Java libraries. To implement Jasp language, we use Pnuts script language written in and for Java. We show that the object oriented framework of Java is useful for building and extending Jasp language and the pre-processor approach is effective and less time-consuming for adding new features.

To do this, the followings are performed: gathering information in previous studies, reviewing dimension reduction (including variable selection), proposing dimension reduction and clustering dealing with mixed measurement level data, developing interactive interface, and improving computational efficiency. The study is successful to provide some methods that handle the complexity including mixture of measurement level in the context of principal components analysis, and that consider the features of data by heuristic thinking and trial and error using developed interactive interfaces and proposed acceleration algorithms in case where a huge number of computation is necessary such as large-scaled data processing and variable selection.

    We discussed heuristic representation methods and effective computational algorithms for large scaled and high dimensional data in information visu- alization, data reduction, and variable selection problems. We developed a web-based graphics application which has an interactive interface using finger gestures on the touch-screen, a colored face graph which can represent a part of multiple variables by color, and an interactive tool to find useful rules in association analysis. We also studied accel- eration techniques in non-linear principal component analysis by applying an acceleration algorithm to qualitative variable selection problem which needs high computation cost and proposed a two-stage acceleration algorithm to get estimations more speedy. We confirmed that all tools work well for heuristic and intuitive observations and that our proposed ac- celeration algorithms provide good performances in numerical experiments.

    The aim of this research is to build a statistical system which can support simulation and resampling methods with easy and simple operations through an advanced user interface and a useful programming language. Simulation and resampling methods are computer intensive statistical methods, and are especially useful for complicated statistical problems. However, few statistical analysis systems support these methods efficiently. Therefore, we have developed a prototype statistical system named Jasp (Java based Statistical System) that equips various effective features to support simulation and resampling methods.
    A Jasp language is a function-based programming language and has ability for object-oriented programming. Parallel and distributed computing abilities of Jasp can be easily used even by users who are not computer experts, and are especially useful for simulation and resampling methods to execute required huge amount of calculation by using several personal computer simultaneously by a simple program written in the Jasp language. The Jasp user interface, which has a graphical user interface and a character user interface, is designed for using the Jasp language easily. Jasp has a function to utilize statistical knowledge for analysis. Jasp has also flexible extensibility ; it is used, for example, to get a dataset in Microsoft Excel and to display graphs of other software packages.

    The aim of this research is to propose a statistical analysis system which can perform distributed processing using the Internet with easy and simple operations through an advanced graphical user interface. As statistical procedures should be used for real data by using computers, it is one of the important topics of statistics to make an easy and powerful statistical analysis system using recent progresses of computing technologies, especially the Internet related ones. Considering that amount of data have become very large in these days, distributed processing using many computers connected by the Internet is promising. In this research, we have made a prototype statistical system Jasp (JAva based Statistical Processor), which considered distributed processing abilities from the beginning of its design. Jasp is written in the Java language, a system construction language which has many recent developed computing technologies neatly, including functions for communications among remote computers. By using these Java technologies, we have realized a client/server architecture, distributed processing abilities, an easy graphical user interface and a simple statistical language. Therefore, Jasp has archived the airn of his research to some extent.
    .Jasp has, however, still some deficiencics : less reliability or lack of required functions. We will improve these deficiencies and will make Jasp a useful tool for statisticians.
