    This study, situated at the crossroads of Cultural Studies, Postcolonial Studies and American Studies, investigates two short stories, "Barbie-Q" and "The Marlboro Man" (1991) by Sandra Cisneros and a novel, The God of Small Things (1997) by Arundhati Roy, in pursuit of a broader and deeper understanding of the complex correlations between American popular culture and diasporic/postcolonial circumstances. Through a comparative reading of different types of literary works, in particular the scenes containing American popular culture in the texts, this study strives to elucidate contemporary diasporic/postcolonial exposure to, struggle with, or engagement with globalizing consumerism, simultaneously shedding light on the other larger power structures at work, such as class system, racial/ethnic hegemony and patriarchy, in the diasporic/postcolonial milieu. Despite their differences in length, cultural backgrounds, approaches or themes, these texts share similar writing styles, that is to say hybrid languages and deviations from a formal rule. Those small details of writing embedded in their texts successfully accrue to finally present themselves as counterhegemonic existences. Scrutinizing the diasporic/postcolonial scenes that include American popular culture, the study also argues the small, yet paradoxical, moments in the texts, and concludes the necessity of both macro level and micro level analysis for the better understanding of the intricate relations between U.S. cultural formations and diasporic/postcolonial situations..
