    This article reports on the development and use of the Developmental Sentence Scoring for Japanese (DSSJ), a new morpho-syntactical measure for Japanese constructed after the model of Lee's English Developmental Sentence Scoring model. Using this measure, the authors calculated DSSJ scores for 84 children divided into six age groups between 2; 8 and 5; 2 on the basis of 100-sentence samples collected from free-play child-adult conversations. The analysis showed a high correlation of the DSSJ overall score with the Mean Length of Utterance. The analysis of the DSSJ sub-area scores revealed large variations between these sub-area scores for children with similar overall DSSJ scores. When investigating the high-scoring children (over 1 SD over group average), most children scored high in three to five sub-areas, but the combination of scores for these sub-areas varied from child to child. It is concluded that DSSJ is a valuable tool especially for language acquisition research. The overall DSSJ score reliably reflects the overall morpho-syntactic development of Japanese children, and the sub-area scores provide specific information on individual acquisition patterns.

    This paper presents two experimental studies that examine English-speaking learners' knowledge of unaccusativity in Japanese. Following Levin & Rappaport Hovav (1995) and Kageyama (1993), I distinguish between deep versus surface unaccusativity. Deep unaccusativity refers to a representation where the argument of an unaccusative verb is base-generated in the object position, whereas surface unaccusativity refers to a configuration where the unaccusative argument remains in the object position even at a later stage of derivation (i.e., it does not move to the subject position). It has been claimed that Japanese exhibits both deep and surface unaccusativity (Kageyama, 1993; Yatsushiro, 1999). Previous findings in second language (L2) literature suggest that learners of Japanese are sensitive to deep unaccusativity, based on the results of tests involving the takusan 'a lot' construction and quantifier floating (Hirakawa, 1999; Sorace Shomura, 2001). However, these studies failed to tap knowledge of surface unaccusativity where Case Drop was used as a diagnostic. The failure was due to the fact that even native speakers did not behave as the theory predicted. Following up on these studies, the present paper uses new constructions in order to examine the issue further : resultatives for deep unaccusativity and causative-passives for surface unaccusativity. Results confirm that deep unaccusativity is observed by both intermediate and advanced learners but that surface unaccusativity is observed only by advanced learners. I argue that L2 learners' grammars are constrained by the principles of UG but that the L1 also has some effects in the acquisition of the properties of unaccusative verbs in the L2 when they differ from those in the L1.

    This article reports an a small study investigating whether reaching second language learners the long-distance (LD) properties of the Japanese reflexive zibun 'self' leads to acquisition of its subject-oriented status. The study involved low intermediate level learners of Japanese who were instructed on zibun over a four-week period. The focus of the instruction was that the reflexive zibun can take long-distance antecedents. At the same time, subjects were never taught that the antecedent must be a subject. Subjects were tested using a truth-value judgment task. Results show that the learners initially rejected LD binding; they showed a significant increase in acceptance of LD antecedents after the teaching intervention. Analyses of individual learners show that about half of them successfully acquired the relevant properties of zibun. With one exception, learners did not generalize from their instruction to assume that ''anything goes'' as far as antecedents for zibun are concerned. Rather, they acquired grammars of reflexive binding that fall within the range permitted by Universal Grammar.

    I have shown that errors that L2 learners make are consistent with the theory of markedness, that we observe clear cases of L1 transfer, and that degrees of transfer differ based on their L2 proficiency. Overall, the results show that speakers with different L1 background show different developmental processes. Concretely, a comparative study of Japanese, English, and Chinese shows that they differ in terms of their syntactic properties of phonologically null elements, and that such differences can be explicated through the examination of their L2 error patterns.
    In addition to these theoretical contributions, I have also contributed to the development of effective teaching. Concretely, I have developed some teaching materials which can attract students’ interests, and examined quantitatively how effective these materials can be when used in introductory linguistics classes.
