Mental health problems are prevalent among the working population and must be resolved. We conducted a web-based large-scale study of workers, including a baseline survey and two follow-up surveys, to investigate the associations between self-care behaviors in daily life (e.g., stress coping, sleep, diet, and exercise), work environment improvements, and mental health among Japanese employees from various industries. In this protocol, we demonstrate the study design and demographic data of the participants in the baseline survey. Invitations to participate in this study were sent to 421,825 internet monitor registrants in February 2022. Overall, 20,000 registrants who met the inclusion criteria participated in the survey. There were large variations in occupations and working styles (e.g., physical work, night work, and teleworking) among the participants, and we also found significant differences between male and female participants in the demographic data. An overview of the survey data suggests that the demographic characteristics of the participants in this study are comparable to those reported in previous studies on Japanese employees. We plan to use these survey data in the future to examine the associations of daily lifestyles and work environments with the mental health of Japanese employees.

勤務間インターバルとは,勤務終了後から翌始業までの休息時間のことを言う.本研究は,勤務間インターバルと睡眠時間の組み合わせと職業性ストレスおよび病気欠勤の関連を検討した.本横断調査は,WEB形式で2022年2月に実施した.日勤労働者13,306名に対して勤務間インターバル,睡眠時間,職業性の高ストレス(職業性ストレス簡易調査票),病気欠勤について尋ねた.参加者を勤務間インターバルと睡眠時間に基づき14群に分類し,これを独立変数,高ストレス判定と病気欠勤を従属変数としたロジスティック回帰分析を実施した.その結果,短いインターバル(<11時間)と通常睡眠(>6時間)や十分なインターバル(15時間)と短時間睡眠(<6時間)の組み合わせで,基準(十分なインターバルと通常睡眠)と比べてオッズ比が有意に高かった.これは,勤務間インターバルと睡眠時間を十分に確保することが職業性ストレスの低減に重要であり,勤務間インターバル制度によりインターバルが十分に確保されても,睡眠時間が短いと健康リスクが生じる可能性を示している.病気欠勤について,短いインターバルと短時間睡眠の組み合わせでオッズ比が有意に低かった.この原因として,勤務間インターバルが短い(長時間働かなければならない)人々は,忙しいために病気欠勤が必要な状況になっても休みを取れずあるいは取らず,結果的にオッズ比が低くなった可能性が考えられる.(著者抄録)

<p>Purpose: We developed a mental health promotion campaign program to promote psychiatric help-seeking behavior among university students by adopting a social marketing approach and nudge theory from behavioral economics. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the campaign. The campaign focused on the illustration of cognitive function-related symptoms and was called the “Fatigue of Brain” campaign.Methods: This study retrospectively compared the duration until psychiatric consultation at health care centers in a Japanese university between data obtained from our previous study (2016-2018) with data from our newly developed mental health campaign (2018-2020). The campaign program included a small leaflet, given to all students during their physical examinations, which directed them to a special website.Results: The results of logistic regression analysis using data that met the eligibility and inclusion/exclusion criteria showed that the proportion of students (40.3%) who visited psychiatric consultations within two weeks of the campaign’s onset was significantly higher than the proportion of students visiting before the campaign (37.6%; OR = .578, 95% CI = .343 - .972, p = .039). Multivariate analysis revealed that the proportion of students with depressive symptoms (31.6%) was significantly higher during the campaign than before the campaign (17.3%; OR = .444, 95%CI = .234–.843, p = .013).Conclusions: The results suggest that our cognitive function-focused mental health campaign promotes earlier psychiatric consultation.</p>

Previous studies among middle-aged and older adults have shown that engagement in exercise with others is more strongly associated with better mental health than engagement in exercise alone. However, the applicability of such findings to workers remains unclear. This study aimed to examine whether 1) engagement in exercise with others and time spent exercising with others were associated with lower stress response and mental distress among workers, and 2) self-determined motivation toward exercise mediated these associations among workers. This was a cross-sectional study. A web-based questionnaire survey was conducted among 810 workers aged 20 to 59 years. The survey measured respondents’ engagement and time spent exercising alone and with others, self-determined motivation toward exercise, psychological and physical stress responses, mental distress, and basic factors. Basic factors were treated as covariates. The analyses of covariance showed that engagement in exercise with others was significantly associated with lower psychological and physical stress responses and mental distress, while engagement in exercise alone was not. Multiple regression analyses revealed that longer time spent exercising with others was not associated with lower psychological and physical stress responses or mental distress. Path analyses showed that mediation effect of self-determined motivation on these associations was not significant. Although dose-response associations and the mediating role of self-determined motivation were not confirmed, this study found that engagement in exercise with others was associated with lower stress responses and mental distress among workers.

A daily rest period (DRP) is a daily inter-work interval that contains sleep opportunity. This study investigates the joint association of DRP and sleep duration with worker health and productivity. A total of 13,306 Japanese daytime workers participated in this web-based cross-sectional survey. Participants reported on their DRPs and sleep duration; moreover, sleep difficulties, mental health, and presenteeism were assessed by the standardized questionnaires. The participants were divided into 10 groups based on their DRPs and sleep duration. Logistic regression analyses showed that the combination of quick return (QR: DRP of &lt;11 h) and short sleep duration (&lt;6 h) was found to be significantly associated with sleep difficulties (odds ratio [OR] = 4.45, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 2.83–7.01), poor mental health (OR = 3.04, 95% CI = 1.79–5.15), and presenteeism (OR = 2.35, 95% CI = 1.47–3.77) compared with the reference group (the combination of adequate DRP [15 h] and a normal sleep duration [≥6 h]). The combination of QR and normal sleep duration or adequate DRP and short sleep duration was significantly associated with high ORs for the outcomes. QR, short sleep duration, or both negatively affect worker health and productivity.

OBJECTIVE: During the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, social isolation and impaired social interaction could be the factors that cause mental health problems. This study investigated the association between conversation time in daily life and mental health among Japanese employees. METHODS: In August 2021, a web-based cross-sectional survey was conducted with 1000 Japanese employees. Weekly conversation time was assessed in four domains (family members, friends, someone in the workplace, and others), and mental health was assessed using the Japanese version of the Kessler Psychological Distress Scale (K6 scale). Weekly total conversation time was calculated, and participants were assigned to one of the four conversation time categories based on quantile values to investigate the associations with poor mental health (K6 ≥ 13). RESULTS: The logistic regression analyses revealed that participants with short conversation times (<3.5 h per week) had poorer mental health compared to those with long conversation times (> 21.0 h per week), even after adjusting for confounders (OR = 2.48 [95% CI 1.31-4.71]). For the exploratory analyses of conversation time for each domain, the associations of short conversation time in the workplace with poor mental health was most robust (OR =2.02 [95% CI 1.13-3.63]). CONCLUSIONS: Japanese employees with conversation time of <3.5 h per week (i.e., 30 min per day) had poor mental health. During the COVID-19 pandemic, people have largely limited opportunities to have conversations with others, but a certain level of conversation time might be required to maintain mental health.

Appropriately estimating stress levels in daily life is important for motivating people to undertake stress-management behaviors or seek out information on stress management and mental health. People who exhibit high stress underestimation might not be interested in information on mental health, and would therefore have less knowledge of it. We investigated the association between stress underestimation tendency and mental health literacy of depression (i.e., knowledge of the recognition, prognosis, and usefulness of resources of depression) in Japanese workers. We cross-sectionally surveyed 3718 Japanese workers using a web-based questionnaire on stress underestimation, mental health literacy of depression (vignettes on people with depression), and covariates (age, education, depressive symptoms, income, and worksite size). After adjusting for covariates, high stress underestimation was associated with greater odds of not recognizing depression (i.e., choosing anything other than depression). Furthermore, these individuals had greater odds of expecting the case to improve without treatment and not selecting useful sources of support (e.g. talk over with friends/family, see a psychiatrist, take medication, see a counselor) compared to those with moderate stress underestimation. These relationships were all stronger among males than among females. Stress underestimation was related to poorer mental health literacy of depression.

&lt;p&gt;It is necessary to develop the effective psycho-educational concepts and materials to enhance the uptake behavior of appropriate specialized institutions of mental health care, such as psychiatric clinics or centers providing psychotherapy. In this research, we developed the core concepts and materials, which can be used for the Web sites, or pamphlets intended to enhance appropriate uptake behavior, by conducting internet-based research and a formative interview based on a social marketing approach. As a result of an analysis of 819 first-time users of mental health care services that met eligibility criteria, descriptive characteristics of the uptake behavior for mental health care were revealed and the differences in mental health care literacy between people with a shorter distribution of the untreated period (DUI) and a longer DUI were clarified.&lt;b&gt; &lt;/b&gt;By formative research based on the social marketing frame-work, we developed core concepts and materials consisting of the characteristics of the people with a shorter DUI (WHO), the messages about preventing a longer DUI (WHAT), and effective methods for presentation and communication (HOW).&lt;/p&gt;

Objective: Depression is a prevalent disorder that has a substantial impact on not only individuals but also society as a whole. Despite many effective depression interventions, delay in initial treatment contact is problematic. The Internet is a possible tool for low-cost dissemination of appropriate information and awareness raising about depressive disorders among the general public. This study aimed to identify factors associated with unwillingness to seek professional help for depression in Internet users. Results: This web-based cross-sectional study surveyed 595 participants who scored over the cutoff point for depression on a self-rated mental-health questionnaire for depression, had never been assessed or treated by a mental health professional, and were experiencing depressive symptoms for at least 6 months. Among the 595 participants, 329 (55.3%) reported they were unwilling to seek professional help for depression. Regression analysis indicated that unwillingness to seek professional help for depression was associated with male sex and financial issues as a depression trigger, and that willingness to seek professional help was associated with problems with interpersonal relationships. The Internet warrants further complementary investigation to elucidate factors associated with unwillingness to seek professional help for depression.

"Reality shock" is defined as the discrepancy between an individual's expectations established prior to joining to an organization and their perceptions after becoming a member of the organization. The purpose of this study was to develop a scale to measure factors leading to reality shock in first-year teachers, and to confirm its reliability and validity. A scale was developed based on factors leading to realty shock, and a survey was conducted on 219 first-year teachers (90 men, 129 women, mean age 25.18 years). Structure analysis based on factor analysis revealed that this scale consisted of four factors
"inter-personal relations in the workplace", "lack of experience", "relationship with students or parents", and "pressure at work". Given that high scores of the scale were associated with negative changes in perceptions of work, we showed that the scale was concurrently valid. Multiple regression analysis showed that realty shock significantly influenced stress responses, and that it had particular positive effects on anxiety and depression. Future studies will need to elucidate factors that buffer the effects of reality shock, and develop interventions to prevent worsening mental health in first-year teachers.

Being appropriately aware of the extent of stress experienced in daily life is essential in motivating stress management behaviours. Excessive stress underestimation obstructs this process, which is expected to exert adverse effects on health. We prospectively examined associations between stress underestimation and mental health outcomes in Japanese workers.
Web-based surveys were conducted twice with an interval of 1 year on 2359 Japanese male workers. Participants were asked to complete survey items concerning stress underestimation, depressive symptoms, sickness absence, and antidepressant use.
Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that high baseline levels of 'overgeneralization of stress' and 'insensitivity to stress' were significantly associated with new-onset depressive symptoms (OR = 2.66 [95 % CI, 1.54-4.59], p &lt; .01) and antidepressant use (OR = 4.91 [95 % CI, 1.22-19.74], p &lt; .05), respectively, during the 1-year follow-up period.
This study clearly demonstrated that stress underestimation, including stress insensitivity and the overgeneralization of stress, could exert adverse effects on mental health.

Purpose: The preference for dialysis modalities is not well understood in Japan. This study explored the subjective views of Japanese patients undergoing dialysis regarding their treatments. Methods: The participants were receiving in-center hemodialysis (CHD) or continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). In Study 1, 34 participants (17 CHD and 17 CAPD) were interviewed about the advantages and disadvantages of dialysis modalities. In Study 2, 454 dialysis patients (437 CHD and 17 CAPD) rated the advantages and disadvantages of CHD and CAPD in a cross-sectional survey. Results: Interviews showed that professional care and dialysis-free days were considered as advantages of CHD, while independence, less hospital visits, and flexibility were considered as advantages of CAPD. Disadvantages of CHD included restriction of food and fluids and unpleasant symptoms after each dialysis session. Catheter care was an additional disadvantage of CAPD. Survey showed that the highly ranked advantages were professional care in CHD and less frequent hospital visits in CAPD, while the highly ranked disadvantages were concerns about emergency and time restrictions in CHD, and catheter care and difficulty in soaking in a bath in CAPD. The total scores of advantages and disadvantages showed that CHD patients subjectively rated their own modality better CHD over CAPD, while CAPD patients had the opposite opinion. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that the factors affecting the decision-making process of Japanese patients are unique to Japanese culture, namely considering the trouble caused to the people around patients (e.g., families, spouses, and/or caregivers). © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht.

Stress estimation is involved in the production of stress management behavior. Stress underestimation could hinder efforts to adequately manage stress. This study developed a measure to assess stress underestimation beliefs. Questionnaire surveys were conducted by mail twice on 2,340 adults aged from 20 to 65 years. The data from the surveys were subject to factor analysis, from which we developed a 12-item scale to assess stress underestimation beliefs (SUB). The SUB included four subscales: "Excessive self-efficacy for managing stress," "Insensitivity to stress," " Overgeneralization of stress," and "Evasive attitude towards stress." The SUB had adequate internal consistency. Higher SUB scores were associated with being in the precontemplation stage of change in terms of stress management behaviors, working long overtime hours (more than 81 hours per month), and having fewer self-reported stress symptoms. The SUB is potentially useful for assessing stress underestimation in the context of stress management.

援助要請の先行研究と発達障害児の母親17名への半構造化面接内容から，援助を受ける際に抱く意識を抽出・分類し30カテゴリーを得た。発達障害児をもつ母親が初めて専門的援助を受けようと考えた際には，援助に対する戸惑いや期待，援助要請の結果をネガティブに予測するなど発達障害児をもつ母親特有の意識が生じることが示唆された。

The proper use of condoms is one of the most effective types of protection against HIV. One of the major factors that negatively affect the use of condoms is embarrassment caused by using or negotiating to use condoms. To clarify the causes and effects of embarrassment on using or negotiating to use condoms, 186 undergraduate student volunteers were investigated. The results showed that patterns of types of embarrassment were unclear when they used or negotiated to use condoms. Moreover, structural equation modeling revealed that the embarrassment felt by males was strongly promoted by apprehension of the partner's evaluation, while the embarrassment felt by females was strongly promoted by vagueness in the kind of guidelines aimed at behavior regarding condom use or negotiation to use condoms. Implications of this study on HIV prevention, especially the intervention method of promoting condom use or negotiation to use condoms, are also discussed.

The scores for embarrassment, and many factors of embarrassment, were lower in the "action" stage than in the other stages. However, the patterns of condom use scores were unclear. These results indicate that with regard to condom purchases, persons who are in the "preparation" or earlier stages (i.e., persons who are not purchasing condoms) are particularly susceptible to embarrassment.

Properly using condoms is one of the most effective types of protection against HIV. To clarify the contents of normative beliefs regarding purchasing and using condoms, 390 undergraduate student volunteers were surveyed. The exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that both males and females held two types of normative beliefs, namely formal normative beliefs and informal normative beliefs, regarding purchasing and using condoms. Formal normative beliefs were concerned with the necessity of condoms on the one hand, while informal normative beliefs were concerned with private norms within reference groups on the other. Moreover, a t-test revealed a significant gender difference in formal normative beliefs regarding purchasing condoms, with females regarding purchasing condoms as less necessary than males did. These results were discussed from the view of HIV prevention education.

The purpose of this study was to develop the self-efficacy (SE) scales and to examine the relationship between diet behavior and SE in junior high school girls. The Japanese version of the SE for Exercise Behavior Scales (JSEB) and the Situational Appetite Measure - Efficacy (SAM-EJ) were developed by collecting data from 387 students of junior high school girls. Principal component analysis yields a single meaningful exercise behavior SE principal component and factor analysis yields five control overeating SE factors (Reward, Negative Feelings, Hunger, Relax, and Food present) . The reliability of those scales were established using the Cronbach α test. The JSEB was significantly associated with reported exercise behavior and the SAM-EJ was significantly correlated with Japanese version Eating Attitude Test providing evidence of criterion-related validity.<BR>Based on their diet behavior, the subjects were assigned to four diet-behavior groups: no diet group, dieting group, exercise group, and dieting+exercise group. The present study examined individual differences in psychological and physiological stress responses to the same stressor. In Study 1, psychological stress responses were assessed at three time periods: four weeks before, the day before, and the middle day of the semester-end examination period (N = 69). Both stress coping and MPI were assessed once during the study. In Study 2, 15 subjects were exposed to the same psychological stressor in an experiment to measure heart rate. The stressors were memorization of material relevant to the examination (Test 1), and mental calculation irrelevant to the examination (Test 2). Subjects were divided into 2 groups on the basis of their Study 1 psychological stress response scores: the low stress group (LS, N = 10) and the high stress group (HS, N = 5). The results of Study 1 and Test 1 of Study 2 suggested that there were significant differences between LS and HS in stress responses. These findings were discussed in light of cognitive appraisal and controllability of time. Further studies are needed to clarify the aspect of time span in cognitive appraisal.
