An online survey was conducted to clarify the connotative meanings of the cute and the attitudes toward cuteness in three countries: Japan ( n = 1,000), the United States ( n = 718), and Israel ( n = 437). The results show a remarkable resemblance in respondents’ conceptions of the cute ( kawaii in Japanese and hamud in Hebrew) across countries. Except for slight cultural differences, the following common tendencies were found: (a) Cuteness is highly appreciated and believed to induce positive affective responses, (b) women tend to find things cute more frequently and strongly than men do, (c) animal babies are thought to be cuter than human babies, and (d) infants are found to be cuter when people get older, while older people generally show less positive attitudes toward cuteness. This study provides some evidence that the concept of cuteness and the feelings connected to its perception are universal.

A BBC Radio 4 'Book of the Week' Why are some things cute, and others not? What happens to our brains when we see something cute? And how did cuteness go global, from Hello Kitty to Disney characters? Cuteness is an area where culture and biology get tangled up. Seeing a cute animal triggers some of the most powerful psychological instincts we have - the ones that elicit our care and protection - but there is a deeper story behind the broad appeal of Japanese cats and saccharine greetings cards. Joshua Paul Dale, a pioneer in the burgeoning field of cuteness studies, explains how the cute aesthetic spread around the globe, from pop brands to Lolita fashion, kids' cartoons and the unstoppable rise of Hello Kitty. Irresistible delves into the surprisingly ancient origins of Japan's kawaii culture, and uncovers the cross-cultural pollination of the globalised world. Understanding the psychology of cuteness can help answer some of the biggest questions in evolutionary history and the mysterious origins of animal domestication. This is the fascinating cultural history of cuteness, and a revealing look at how our most powerful psychological impulses have remade global style and culture.

    Joshua Paul Dale: ‘Cute Adjacent’
I propose the category of cute adjacency as a useful way of outlining issues of concern in cute studies as a whole and cute ecologies in particular. We must define cuteness before we can talk about proximity to it. There’s a line from Daniel Harris’s essay on cuteness that is often quoted in academic articles: “Cuteness is not something we find in our children, but something we do to them.” This only partially fits the evidence, which suggests that cuteness is both inborn and created: an affective response and an aesthetic. We find cuteness in children because it is a biological phenomenon. And when we make something cute, we’re building from this biological response. This means that cute affect—what we find (or rather, feel) to be cute—is a key factor in aesthetics, which include the actions we take to “do” or create the cute. Feeling that something is cute is a rather straightforward response. But this response is also influenced by individual and cultural factors, which means that people often disagree about what is cute. Cute adjacency is useful within this interpersonal conflict because it describes the proximity of something that could be cute but just misses the mark, and/or instances when something gestures towards the cute without triggering cute affect. To more fully define cute adjacent, I’ll consider propinquity, meaning closeness, nearness or
even kinship. In psychology, the propinquity effect is the tendency of individuals to form close
relationships with people they repeatedly encounter. This strikes me as a useful term for use
within cute ecologies. When considering cute vs. non-cute animals, or whether or not to “cutify” flora or fauna, it’s helpful to consider propinquity because it reflects our tendency to feel cuteness based on relationships that accrue through repeated encounters or iterations rather than mere appearance.

Why are some things cute, and others not?

Understanding the psychology of cuteness can help answer some of the biggest questions in evolutionary history and the mysterious origins of animal domestication. This is the first cultural history of cuteness, and offers a revealing look at how our most powerful psychological impulses have remade global style and culture.

In his talk, Joshua will explore the science behind cuteness using examples ranging from the annual "Pikachu Outbreak" parade of Pokémon characters in Yokohama to the free-roaming foxes of Zao Fox Village in Miyagi Prefecture. Then, he'll speak on how Japan's kawaii culture influenced emoji; fan conventions of "furries" who dress in head-to-toe animal costumes; and the latest in cute robots, the LOVOT.

  • Daily Cuts - The Labubu frenzy: When a cuteness overload goes into overdrive

    Andrea Heng, Hairianto Diman

    2024.11 -

     More details

It all started with a photograph of Lisa from mega K-pop girl band Blackpink, carrying a bag with an “ugly” doll accessory strapped to her bag. The demand for Labubu exploded to epic proportions thereafter and the craze has led to thousands of dollars spent – and sometimes lost through scams. Labubu isn’t the first (remember Hello Kitty?) and it certainly won’t be the last. So why is it that “cute” sells so well? Andrea Heng and Hairianto Diman speak to Dr Joshua Paul Dale, Professor, Department of British and American Literature Culture, Chuo University, to find out more.

Can Cuteness Make You a Better Person? This Expert in Japan says ‘Yes!’

We're in Harajuku, Japan's capital of cuteness, to meet Joshua Paul Dale, a professor in Cuteness Studies and a leading authority on everything cute. Everywhere we turn, something adorable catches our eye. We can't resist smiling at the bunny-shaped cotton candy, and when we pass a mini pig café, Vanessa exclaims, "I just want to squish them!" Joshua assures us this reaction is completely normal. He breaks down what happens in our brains when we see something cute, how it charms us, and its influence on our everyday lives.

Why are some things cute, and others not? What happens to our brains when we see something cute? And how did cuteness go global, from Hello Kitty to Disney characters?
Cuteness is an area where culture and biology get tangled up. Seeing a cute animal triggers some of the most powerful psychological instincts we have - the ones that elicit our care and protection - but there is a deeper story behind the broad appeal of Japanese cats and saccharine greetings cards.
In Irresistible: How Cuteness Wired our Brains and Conquered the World (Profile Books, 2023) Dr.

    Authorship:Principal investigator

    Grant amount: \3770000 ( Direct Cost: \2900000 、 Indirect Cost: \870000 )

Everyday aesthetics are a growing subfield within the study of aesthetics. Two of these
aesthetics, American cute and Japanese kawaii, are significant because they speak to powerful needs and shape contemporary sensibilities. However, historical studies of the cute and kawaii aesthetics are extremely limited, as are direct comparisons between them. In addition, the former aesthetic contains a fundamental ambivalence that is lacking in the latter. As a result, the interplay between the two on the world stage is poorly understood, even though kawaii is one of Japan’s most significant cultural exports. This project will address these shortcomings. This is the first project to examine the emergence, development and interrelationship of both the cute and kawaii aesthetics. Research outcomes will benefit scholars from a variety of fields who are studying these two aesthetics.
