The purpose of this study is to clarify the current situation and characteristics of book indexes in Japanese book publishing and to examine research methods for book indexes. Of the 665 books in the field of society listed by Jinbunkai (the association of publishers for the humanities) in 2008, 556 books held by Chuo University Library were examined to determine whether they had book indexes. The conditions for the presence or absence of book indexes were analyzed in terms of subject field, number of pages, price, and publisher. The results indicated that approximately 60% of the books had a book index or more, suggesting that the availability of book indexes varied by subject field, number of pages, price, and publisher. These factors may have been influenced by the publishing policies of the publishers and the editorial policies of the editors. It is not possible to make a judgment based on this survey alone. In addition, the research methods remain an issue for further study.

This study aims to clarify the availability of the textbooks in the syllabus of 1,243 courses offered by the Faculty of Letters, Chuo University, in the academic year 2020. Three ways to obtain the textbooks were assumed: 1) borrowing them from the university library, 2) purchasing them from online bookstores, and 3) borrowing them from e-book services for libraries. As a result, about 90% of the textbooks were held by the library. About 80% of the Japanese books were available for purchase at online bookstores. On the other hand, only 20% were available as e-books. Even in the e-book services for libraries, less than 15% of the textbooks were provided as e-books. As online education becomes more and more popular, it is necessary to develop e-book services, whereas the conditions for expanding them are still insufficient. Libraries need to be prepared to provide both printed books and e-books in an appropriate manner.

This study aims to verify the validity of the article titled "65 out of the 100 most cited papers are paywalled." The article is published on the website in November 2017 and it got into the news in Japan. However, we don't know the difference between the characteristics of paywall papers and open access ones because it doesn't explain the details about those papers. This study examines 101 articles listed in this article and clarifies the features of them. As a result, 66 of the 101 papers were paid and 35 were open access, whereas there were 67 paid papers and 34 open access ones in the survey conducted by the author in February 2018. Both of them are almost the same as the numbers, but the breakdown varies. This study confirmed that the following four points are necessary to discuss the article: (1) insurance of verifiability, (2) provision of sufficient data, (3) lack of a point of view in cumulation, and (4) survey of green open access.

The Standing Committee for Research on Academic Libraries (SCREAL), in cooperation with 45 institutions in Japan, conducted a questionnaire survey from October to December 2011. As a result, 3,922 valid responses across various fields were collected. Following up this survey, we attempt here to clarify how usage and perception of ejournals and scholarly articles among researchers and graduate students in Japan changed. The basic findings were as follows. 1) More than 90% of respondents in natural sciences, including pharmaceutical science, chemistry, biology, physics and medicine, reported that they used e-journals at least once or twice a month. 2) Ejournals were not as heavily used in humanities and social sciences as in natural sciences, but the proportion of regular users turned out to be more than 4 times that of the 2001 survey. 3) This difference in e-journals usage by discipline is strongly associated with the degree of dependence on domestic documents written in Japanese. The two groups of respondents, users of international documents and users of domestic documents, showed a statistically significant difference in answering the question concerning "Frequency of e-journals use." 4) Attitude to the necessity of printed version drastically transmuted. 62.3% of respondents in natural sciences and 53.6% in humanities and social sciences thought "printed journals are unnecessary when e-journals are accessible." 5) Use of digital devices for e-books was not popular as yet, but the respondents expressed their high interest in the future use. Some preliminary discussion is made to identify the factors affecting the usage and/or perception of electronic resources by Japanese researchers.

By using a conceptual model of document demands and services, this paper aims to examine the present situation and future issues of ILL/DDS. It became clear that "Big Deal" contracts and the dissemination of digital contents have brought a change in the reduction of ILL requests, while the document demand itself seems to increase in general in academic institutions. Meanwhile, it seems that the decrease of photocopy requests in companies is due to the shrink of document demands. The digitization of scholarly journals has improved the availability of journal articles, though it is necessary to establish a nation-wide document supply system as quickly as possible.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to identify and examine the factors that affected the scale of ILL photocopy requests between Japanese university libraries from 1994 to 2008.
Design/methodology/approach - Based on the newly developed conceptual framework to interpret the rise and fall in ILL, more than 10 million requests, sent through a nation-wide system called NACSIS-ILL from 1994 to 2008 were quantitatively analyzed.
Findings - The number of photocopy requests for articles in foreign journals started to decrease in 2000, due to the dramatic increase of e-journal titles made accessible through "Big Deal" contracts that came into effect in 2002 as well as other similar trials prior to it. On the other hand, requests for articles in domestic journals, mostly written in Japanese, continued to increase until 2006. The main factor for this increase was the expansion of journal title coverage in bibliographic databases, which enabled users to retrieve more references. However, requests decreased in 2007, because of advances in digitization in the Japanese academic environment.
Research limitations/implications - This research proposes a conceptual model to understand document demand and service patterns observed in nation-wide ILL services. It also successfully draws a comprehensive picture of ILL in Japanese higher education institutions, based on more than 10 million request records over 15 years, and it shows how the number of ILL requests correlates with the availability of requested journals in electronic form.
Originality/value - This research proposes a conceptual model to understand document demand and service patterns observed in nation-wide ILL services. It also successfully draws a comprehensive picture of ILL in Japanese higher education institutions, based on more than 10 million request records over 15 years, and it shows how the number of ILL requests correlates with the availability of requested journals in electronic form.

By proposing a conceptual model of document demands and services, this paper aims to examine changes in scholarly communication with the advent and proliferation of electronic journals. It became clear that “Big Deal” contracts and the development of institutional repositories have brought a change in the reduction of ILL requests, while the document demand itself seems to increase in general, which are affected by such factors as the increase of user population and the improvement of discoverability of articles realized by the growth of bibliographic databases available via WWW. The digitization of scholarly journals has improved the availability of journal articles, though there remain some issues such as budgets for electronic resources and accessibility to non-digitized materials.

This paper explores the body of professional knowledge for academic librarians by researching library staff in Japanese colleges and universities. The research was undertaken in two ways. Initially 23 focus-group interviews were conducted at eight academic libraries from 2003 to 2005. Secondly a paper survey was carried out in 2004. Both of these targeted the whole body of the library staff, ranging from the chief librarian to junior staff. The authors have identified the knowledge and skills required for today's academic librarians and learning opportunities that they preferred. The body of professional knowledge and skills revealed through the analysis of the outcomes of the research is presented here.

The questionnaire was carried out on the situation of database services and librarians' roles in academic libraries. The results are as follows: Database services are provided in many academic libraries; End-user search has become the main method of those services. Having learned from such results, I suggest that librarians make more efforts to provide library-use-instruction, maintain an electronic information environment, and especially improve their skills and knowledge. However, they don't have the opportunities very much, and therefore, we need to expand the public educational system for librarians.

According to the survey of the ALA in 1926, academic 1ibraray-use-instruction was generally done by following three types; (1) library-use orientation, (2) library-use-instruction in relation with regular courses, e.g. English courses, (3) independent courses in regular curriculum, with lectures and practice works. Library handbook, textbook and even motion pictures were used as instruction tools. These types of instruction in 1920's and 1930's seemed to be a root of those in present day's.

This paper aims to discuss collection development and management in academic libraries in the digital age. The progress of information and communication technology (ICT) led to an increase in digital content and its various ways of distributions. While operating the "hybrid library" which has both print materials and electronic resources, academic libraries need to prepare the environment for information access and use suitable for user behaviors in the digital era.

The purpose of this study is to examine how college students' reading is promoted. A questionnaire survey on the reading behaviour of undergraduate students at Chuo University were conducted in July 2020, and 252 responses were received. The authors analyzed to what extent the amount of time spent reading and the advice given by teachers in class were related to students' attitude toward reading education. As a result, it was found that the presence and the amount of teachers' advice were more related to college students' attitude toward reading education than the amount of reading time.

Of the 665 books in the field of humanities and social sciences in the list published by JINBUNKAI (Organization of Japanese Publishers for Humanities) in 2008, 556 books which are held by Chuo University Library were analyzed for such characteristics as the presence of a book index, subject areas, number of pages, price, and publisher. As a result, it was found that about 60% of them have a book index. It was also clarified that there were some characteristics in the subject field and publisher. On the other hand, it became clear that the research method should be improved.

The purpose of this poster is to clarify students' attitudes and preferences toward online learning and to examine its issues. A questionnaire survey was conducted on students who took the lecture course "Introduction to Library and Information Science" in Spring Semester 2020. The questionnaire includes such questions as their opinions on remote learning in general, their views on three types of teaching methods, and the environment of remote learning. The results suggest that there may be some differences between first-year students who have never taken a class at a university and second-year or elder students.

The present project has aimed to make clear the roles of university libraries in the coming environments of scholarly communication, and provide diagnosis from the perspective of the innovations in education and research in university as well as identify requirements for the realization of innovations, and envision "the university library in 2020." Services and collections provided by Japanese university libraries as recorded in the NACSIS-ILL and NACSIS-CAT systems, respectively, have been quantatively and qualitatively analyzed and their temporal changes have been studied in terms of influencing factors. "The university library in 2020" has been presented based on these researches and the feedbacks from practicing librarians on occasions of symposia and workshops.
