Profile

Prof. Yukinobu Abe received his Ph.D. in East Asian History from the University of Tokyo in 2002 and has been serving as Professor of Chinese History at Chuo University, Japan, since 2009. In 2018, he was a visiting professor at the School of Humanities, Tsinghua University, where he taught courses on Japanese Oriental studies and the Han Dynasty’s seal and sash system for an academic year. He has delivered more than forty lectures in Chinese at leading universities across East Asia, including Peking University, Fudan University, Wuhan University, and National Taiwan University. In 2022, he participated in a research project at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science. His research explores royal authority and worldviews from the Han to Tang dynasties through archaeological materials such as official seals, Buddhist bells, and tomb guardians, and more recently examines migration and changes in mentality during the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties from environmental and intellectual perspectives.

    It is well known that granting yinshou 印綬 (a seal with a sash attached) indicated an official appointment during the Han 漢 period, but the actual function of yinshou and the system by which it was granted are not very clear.This paper examines why the Han dynasty granted yinshou to its bureaucrats and what kind of function yinshou performed. The key to examing the meaning behind the granting of yinshou is cigao 賜告 (sick leave specially allowed bureaucrats of the erqianshi 二千石 class).Bureaucrats with cigao were allowed to return home (guijia 帰家) holding yinshou and lead their subordinates.OGATA Isamu 尾形勇, who has verified the idea of an oppositional structure between gong 公 (the public sector) and si 私 (the private sector), explains that the word 'guijia' means leaving the gong-sector and returning to the si-sector.It is said that yinshou was the mark of appointment, in the gong-sector, but this view conflicts with holding yinshou while on cigao.Therefore, the author argues that yinshou was not granted in order to indicate official appointment.On the other hand, appointments that did not indicate class differences was not granted yinshou. Eventually, to lead subordinates in the gong-sector, bureaucrats a llowed cigao had to hold yinshou despite being in the si-sector. Holding yinshou while on cigao shows us that a person who belonged to si-sector could lead subordinates in the gong-sector by virtue of yinshou-i.e., sikokukouzou (a constitution resembling cigao) according to the author.All feng-jun 封君 of the Han dynasty were under the same system structure, indicating that the Han empire ran in contradiction, since it formally governed based on the fengianzhi 封建制 system, but in reality was based on the junxianzhi 郡県制 system.

    1) The Wu-Jian excavated from ChangSha-ZouMaLou can be classed 17types by forms and function. They were gathered by the department of land and cencus of Lin-Xinag district.
    2) We make the value lists of big wooden tablets "LiMin-TianJlaBie", and by watching the tablets, we suppose each big tablet was owned only by the department and a person in charge of the village "Xiang".
    3) Little bamboo tablets, especially cencus registers can be classed some types by writing styles. And we restore each cencus register, and find the diversity of families in scale and structure. In addition to it, the general cencus regisiter called "LiMin-Bu" resembled to cencus regisiters and various ledgers in the later dynasties.
    4) We analyzed the contents of little bamboo tablets, especially receipts of tax payment, and found the process of tax payment and warehousing system. We also found that the receipts can be classed 3 types by writing forms.
    5) We watched all wooden seal-cases, and through measurement and observation to forms, we found they had many functions.
    6) We also watched wooden wide tablets, and understood the form as document. In addition to it, we found that a person in charge of the village "Xiang" took charge of two villages.
    7) At last We watched wooden tablet which was normal size drawing the picture of deer. The leather of deer was one of tax object, because it was written on little bamboo tablets of tax payment. We suppose in this age, the ChangSha district was fortunate with natural environment.
    8) We made databases of texts of big wooden tablets and some little bamboo tablets.
