    A falling weight deflectometer (FWD) is widely used to make pavement structural evaluation. It is dynamic testing equipment which applies impulse force at a surface of pavement and measures surface deflections. However, only peak load and peak surface deflections are commonly recorded. And by regarding them as pseudo-static load and deflections, static backcalculation is employed to estimate layer moduli. Static backcalculation disregards rich information that time series data may possess. This paper presents backcalculated results of all layers from time series data. Also it demonstrates that dynamic backcalculation can estimate the modulus and damping coefficient of all layers from even a set of load and deflection time histories at one location.

    it is said that the influence of the permanent deformation characteristics of subgrade materials on the development of rutting in lightly trafficked asphalt pavements is larger than that in heavily trafficked ones. in this study, relationships among cohesion (c), angle of internal friction (0) and CBR of a subgrade material were obtained by the tri-axial compression test and the CBR test. Then rutting simulations of lightly trafficked asphalt pavements designed by the CBR method were carried out using the elasto-plastic model for cyclic loading based on the modified Cam-Clay model. As a result, it was found that the depth of rutting increases with increasing CRB; of the sugrade, because the thickness of each pavement layer is designed to be thinner as the CBR increases. A thin pavement structure yields higher stresses at the top of the subgrade due to traffic loading and generates large plastic deformations in the subgrade leading to deep rutting at the pavement surface.

    An analytical model for predicting mechanical behavior of asphalt pavement on steel deck plate has been developed being based on the Finite Strip Method (FSM) using overlaid strip element. Overlaid strip elements which are connected to underneath strip elements by link elements represent the pavement on the deck plate. This model is also able to acommodate longitudinal joint in the pavement. Comaprisons of the computed starins with the ones measured on an actual pavement on deck plate showed the validity of the model.

    A condition survey was conducted to investigate surface condition of pavement on steel plate deck of bridge. The results of the survey showed that main distress mode of the pavement are longitudinal cracks which occur at web of longitudinal rib as well as at the position between the webs. To make clear the causes of the crack, we performed strain analysis using overlaid FSM. The strain analysis indicated that, although large tensile strains appeared in the pavement at the web of rib, the strains between the webs were basically compressive. These results can not explain the cracks between the webs. Laboratory experiment modeling the pavement on plate deck was conducted and the results indicated the possibility of occurrence of the cracks by repetition of compressive strain.

    The field excavation of asphalt pavement was conducted in the expressways where East Nippon Expressway Company manage, to investigate how the aging effects from surface to subgrade layer. From the result of this investigations, it is evidenced that the aging of asphalt has attained to not only the surface but also the asphalt stabilization subgrade, and the penetration of asphalt in porous asphalt mixture decreased more rapidly than that of dense-graded asphalt mixture. As a result of further laboratory test based on the aforementioned investigation results, it is indicated that conducting accelerated aging test considering mixture type is necessary to simulate the aging ofthe asphalt arising on the actual road.

    The rheological properties of asphalt are important in the characteristics of pavement used for long periods. The rheological properties of asphalt might be affected by repeat traffic loading or environmental factors such as ambient temperature, air, or UV radiation. This study investigated the effects of traffic and environmental factors on the aging of the asphalt and established an aging index based on the rheological properties of asphalt. Stiffness of asphalt was calculated with a nomograph and measured using a dynamic shear rheometer (DSR). The findings showed a very high correlation between stiffness calculated by nomograph and complex modulus measured by DSR regardless of the loading time and measurement temperature, as well as a very high correlation between complex modulus and loss modulus regardless of loading time, temperature, type of binder, field sample and accelerated aging sample. The relationship between damaged asphalt pavement and the rheological properties of asphalt is discussed.

    It is known that asphalt pavement is subject to longitudinal cracking that begin at the surface and propagate downward. The main mechanism involved is considered to be bending-induced tensile strain away from the tire or shear-induced near-surface tensile strain at the tire edge. It is difficult to specify the location where such cracks occur because vehicles do not follow precisely the same path. Some cracks might form beneath the tire of a vehicle. However, no reliable method has yet been established. The purpose of the present study was to identify the mechanism involved in longitudinal cracking in asphalt mixtures using an improved wheel tracking test. By varying the temperature and loading conditions, it was determined that cracking occurred beneath the tire. The cracks had similar shapes to the longitudinal cracks that occur in road surfaces. The bottom surface of the asphalt showed no evidence of cracking. To determine the reason for this, stress relaxation in an asphalt mixture was investigated using compression tests. As the results, the stress-relaxation performance of an asphalt mixture becomes higher as temperature increases. Moreover the compressive stress was reduced immediately to about half of its maximum value. This suggests that if the compressive stress in the surface layer is released, the residual strain in the binder course layer would act as a tensile strain, which gives rise to the formation of cracks.

    The GIS data of sewerage system are made by map digitization. The map digitization could utilize the drawings registers on pages effectively and make the GIS data at low cost. But the map digitization could not get higher precision than the original drawings registers, and the survey method of original drawings registers might be the low precision method that is out of the general standard of operation specifications for public surveys. Authors considered the high precision 3D data consistent with feature to be needed. Therefore, authors made the 3D coordinate values of feature, that were surveyed from the detail survey (map information level 250) utilized the control points produced from the 4th class control point survey, into the high precision 3D vector data using GIS. It was investigated the validity of positional precision surveyed from the detail survey and the control point survey through the discrepancy between the centers of manhole, one is the detail survey result, other one is the geometrically corrected drawings register. Further, it became possible the underground space such as the earth covering and slope of pipe to be grasped visually by using the 3D expression in GIS.

    A uniaxial fatigue test was used to investigate whether an endurance limit exists in asphalt mixtures. The level of strain at which no increase in fatigue damage occurs was estimated from changes in phase angle during the fatigue test, and investigation was performed at strain levels above and below this level. The number of load applications to failure was estimated from the rate of stiffness change observed in the present test on the basis of the relationship between the rate and the number obtained from existing studies. The test results indicate that there is no endurance limit in dense-graded asphalt mixtures (13) at 10 degrees C when strain is 20 mu m/m or greater.

    The four point bending fatigue tests were carried out for dense graded asphalt mixtures under various wave patterns in repeated loading: sinusoidal, triangular, twin peaks, sinusoidal with one second rest period, sinusoidal with ten second rest period. Analyzing the results using classical fatigue analysis, energy approach and ENTPE fatigue damage approach, it was found 1) that the fatigue damage subjected in asphalt Mixtures differs significantly depending on the wave patterns of repeated loading, giving much difference in the number of load applications to failure, 2) that the number of load applications to failure is depending considerably on the rest period 3) that there are linear relations between the rate of dissipated energy change and the number of load applications to failure without the rest period, showing approximately constant relations even if loading wave pattern is different, 4) that there are linear relations between the rate of stiffness change and the number of load applications to failure, showing approximately constant relations even if loading wave pattern and rest period are different.

    SASW has been well known as one of nondestructive testing methods for pavements. This method makes use of the dispersion characteristics to estimate the thickness and modulus of pavement layers. It is difficult to obtain accurate dispersion curves even if the analytical surface wave fields are used, where only the stiffness proportional damping is considered. However, the good agreement of dispersion curves has been found for the analytical surface wave fields if Rayleigh damping is adopted in the numerical simulation. In this paper, a dynamic general FEM software was developed to inverse the layer moduli and Rayleigh damping coefficient of the tested pavement structure using the portable FWD data. It shows that the predicted dispersion curves are well approximately to ones obtained from experimental SASW.

    It has been indicated, during FWD test, that variations of loading time and time integration of load have influences on the estimated elastic modulus and K-value of subgrade even if the peak load is same. The above indication could not be found from the impact numerical FE analysis of elastic model for the portable FWD. In this study, analytical study has been carried out to investigate the influences of various parameters, such as the rigidity of subgrade, the mass and drop height of falling weight, on the loading time and time integration of load from the numerical analysis of viscoelastic subgrade model.

    A difference in level, incline and closs slope on sidewalks are serious barriers for aged and physically handicapped persons. However, even if they are small, roughness of sidewalk would increase wheelchair traveling load in case of rough sidewalk.<BR>In this study, measurements of longitudinal profile and torque of wheelchair traveling at a constant speed were conducted at 5m length test sections on steep and rough sidewalks. The relationship between the longitudinal profile and the wheelchair traveling load was also analyzed. It was found that the wheelchair traveling load cased by roughness could be estimated from the longitudinal profile.

    The purpose of this study is to develop roughness criteria of airport pavements based on aircraft response to ensure the safety in operation and the ride comfortability of aircraft. As the results, relationship between aircraft vertical acceleration and roughness of pavement was clarified using simulation program of aircraft response, APRas, and the roughness criteria in order to keep aircraft vertical acceleration under 0.4g for both runway and taxiway were obtained. To verify these roughness criteria, longitudinal profile was measured on runway of major domestic airport for three years, and roughness evaluation of the airport pavements was carried out using these criteria.

    In this study, the generalized Voigt model is employed to represent the dynamic behavior of asphalt mixtures. Parameter values of the rheological model were identified using a method based on a system identification approach. From the results of parameter identification using dynamic flexural test data, it was found that the frequency range that the model covers broadens with increasing the number of elements and that the eight elements model covers the range of 0.01 to 100Hz. The estimated parameters showed that the elastic moduli of the model are independent on temperature, while viscous moduli decrease with temperature rising.

    Runway roughness affects primarily ride quality and dynamic wheel loads. The forces applied onto the airport pavement by aircraft vary instantaneously above and blow the static weight, which in turn increase the runway roughness. One method to effectively assess the ride quality of the airport runway is to measure its longitudinal profile and numerical simulate aircraft response performing a takeoff, landing or taxiing on that profile data. In this study the aircraft responses excited as the aircraft accelerates or moves at a constant speed on the runway during takeoff and taxi are computed by using the improved computer program TAXI. This procedure is capable of taking into account both the effects of discrete runway bumps and runway roughness. Thus, sections of significant dynamic response can be determined, and the maintenance and rehabilitation works for airport runways will be conducted.

    It is indispensable to know the establishment of material property evaluation method and the material influence proportion in order to understand the flow deformation resistance of the asphalt mixture. In this study, focusing on the viscoelasticity of the polymer modified bitumen and geometrical properties of coarse aggregates, their measuring and evaluation methods were examined. The examination of relation between the obtained material property values and porous mixture properties revealed that mortar consisting of asphalt and aggregate granules is highly correlated with the dynamic stability of mixture and that the flow deformation of mixture is more influenced by the microtexture of coarse aggregate surface rather than large geometrical properties such as coarse aggregate flatness.

    空港内における航空機の安全な,あるいは乗員乗客にとっての快適な運行を考慮した場合,離着陸の行われる滑走路は,重要な役割を担っている.本研究では,非接触型路面プロファイラを用いて空港滑走路の縦断プロファイルを測定し,得られたプロファイルにウェーブレット解析を適用していくつかの仮想プロファイルを設定することで,航空機の離発着時の鉛直方向加速度をシミュレートした.その結果,鉛直方向加速度,すなわち,航空機の乗り心地に影響を与える波長が存在することがわかった.その航空機の種別による差を検討するとともに,これらをふまえた滑走路の補修方法についての簡単な検討を行った.

    排水性舗装は高空隙率であるために使用されている高粘度改質アスファルトの劣化が激しく,施工後5~7年で針入度が10(1/10mm)程度にまで劣化している場合が多い.そこで,本研究では高粘度改質アスファルトの劣化に関する検討を行い,劣化した高粘度改質アスファルトを回復させるにはオイル成分と改質材成分の補充が必要であることを明らかにした.次に,排水性アスファルト混合物の再生を目的に実験的検討を行い,SBSエマルジョンが排水性アスファルト混合物発生材への分散性に優れていることを見出した.また,SBSエマルジョンを改良することで劣化した高粘度バインダへの相溶性を向上させることができることを示した.

    従来,空港舗装は維持・修繕という管理者側の視点により,評価・工事が実施されている.これに対して,本研究では快適で安全な走行面を提供するという利用者側の見地に立った空港舗装機能評価を目的としており,1)空港舗装の乗り心地・安全性への主要影響因子に関する意識調査,2)使用頻度の高い国内一空港における舗装状況評価,3)空港舗装のプロファイルと意識調査結果との関係から構成されている.最初に,エプロン,誘導路,滑走路においてパイロットによる安全性・快適性評価を行い,評価に影響を及ぼす空港舗装の主要影響因子を明らかにした.次に,滑走路プロファイルの実測値に対するwavelet解析により路面性状評価を行い,意識調査との比較・検討からパイロットの評価に対応する路面周波数帯を特定した.

A newly developed link element models the insulation layer that bonds the pavement to the steel deck plate.     Airport pavement roughness is studied including both the subjective evaluation and digital simulation. Pilots' subjective evaluation on surface characteristics is clarified by questionnaires, which indicates that the roughness is one of the most highly influential factors on riding quality and safety. The response of aircraft motion to the longitudinal profiles of airport pavements when departing on runways and taxiing on taxiways was simulated using the program TAXI. The results indicate that the aircraft response varies not only with the surface characteristics (i. e., the amplitudes and wavelengths of the profile), but also with aircraft speed. Finally, roughness criteria for runways and taxiways are proposed.

    Development of a new non-contact profilometer using a laser interferometer has made measurement possible at the normal speed of vehicles and enabled a huge volume of data to be processed rapidly. Employment of the &ldquo;sequential two point method (STP method)&rdquo; has made measurement of the profile at intervals of 1mm and with accuracy of &plusmn;1.2mm. The new profilometer can be used to analyze even the macrotexture and obtain the profile quite accurately. The acquired data can be used as basic materials for evaluating the geometrical characteristics of pavement and a wide range of approach is now possible to solve various problems.

    When layer moduli are backcalculated from a set of surface deflections measured by FWD, it has been known that the backcalculated moduli are affected by measurement errors as well as model link error. This paper presents a genetic algorithm based method that minimize the effect of measurement errors on the moduli.<BR>To confirm the validity of the method presented herein, layer moduli are backcalculated by using Monte Carlo simulation and a set of measurement locations which is different from the optimal set. Finally, this paper examines how sensor locations affect to backcalculated layer moduli using FWD data measured on test road.

    In the design of concrete pavement, curling stresses caused by the temperature difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the slab should be calculated at the transverse joint edge in some cases. However, no such equation has been developed in the past. Accordingly, a curling stress equation was developed based on stress analysis using the finite-element method (FEM). In this FEM analysis, a concrete pavement and its transverse joint were expressed by means of a thin plate-Winkler foundation model and a spring joint model, respectively. Multiregression analysis was applied to the results of the FEM numerical calculation and, consequently, a curling stress equation was obtained. After comparing the calculated results of the equation with curling stress equations developed in the past, it was confirmed that the equation was valid and practical.

    The surface of a rapidly urbanized city has been covered by asphalt pavements, concrete buildings, and other heat retaining structures. This coverage causes its higher temperatures even in the evening and so-called a heat island phenomenum can be found. The accumulated heat makes ambient air warmer and causes an updraft of the air, being followed by a localized torrential downpour. The materials used for these structures are usually unpearmeable and help the rain water run off quickly into sewer pipe through their surfaces.<BR>This study places an emphases on porous asphalt mixtures that can keep the water in themselves and discharge it gradually. The effect of porous asphalt pavements preventing the flood is examined by a case study in Meguro area where an actual flood took place and wide area was covered by water.<BR>It was found that it is very effective to employ the porous asphalt pavements to prevent this kind of flood. The void is recommended to be larger than 20%.

    A fundamental investigation was made on void structures of porous and coarse graded asphalt mixtures to combine their geometrical and physical characteristics. The voids in the mixture were visualized by filling them up with colored epoxy resin. The mixture was then cut after hardening and the sections were carefully imaged by a scanner connected to a personal computer system.<BR>Every pixel of the scanned image of each section was digitized into three values and geometrical distributions of void, mineral aggregate, and binder are characterized as well as each content is quantified. It was found that each mixture has its own specific characteristics in images in cross sections, which is presumably related to its mixture properties.

    FWD is one of the nondestructive test equipment commonly used for evaluating pavement structural adequacy, and it is usually combined with some backcalculation method of pavement layer moduli. The calculated moduli are affected by the type of the analyzing model as well as the accuracy of the measurement.<BR>This paper places an emphasis on determining the optimal position of each deflection sensor of FWD. The simulation was performed using Genetic Algorithms that is a powerful method for obtaining the optimal value among the huge number of combinations. It is found that determination of measuring positions of pavement deflections affects the estimated layer moduli significantly, and a careful selection of adequate measuring positions from the loading point is strongly recommended.

    FWD is one of the nondestructive test equipment used for evaluation of pavement structural adequacy, which is usually aided by some backcalculation method of pavement layer moduli. Application of the genetic algorithms (GA) to the backcalculation of pavement layer moduli is discussed in this paper. GA is a relatively new optimization technique and is based on the process of natural selection, peculiar to the evolution of creatures.<BR>It is found that layer moduli of pavement structure can be estimated properly by the backcalculation technique based on GA, and the obtained solutions are more stable than those of the conventional backcalculation methods. Finally, the new backcalculation technique based on GA is applied to the deflection basins measured by FWD in an actual pavement in situ, showing that it gives more reasonable solutions than those by the conventional techniques.

    Longitudinal surface cracks (LSC) are often observed in asphalt pavements on steel bridge deck. The cracks appear longitudinally on pavement surface in wheel paths and their spacing coincides with a half of spacing of longitudinal ribs. The objective of this study is to find the causes and mechanism of the LSC. A condition survey was conducted on more than 50 steel deck bridges to investigate actual conditions of pavements on the bridges. The survey revealed that LSC actually starts from pavement surface but does not reach its bottom, and that they appear not only above the webs of main girder or longitudinal ribs but also between the webs. Behaviors of asphalt mixtures at high temperature were investigated. It was observed that at high temperature small cracks really occurred around aggregates and grew further. The reason of the cracking was that the aggregates vertically moved by wheel load and broke thin films of aged asphalt binder around the aggregates. A computer simulation was performed using a newly developed FE model, in which a steel deck structure is modelled with a strip element and the pavement on it is modelled with a prism element. To take into account viscosity of asphalt materials, the Burger model was incorporated. In the simulation, axle loads traveled over a pavement and variations of stresses and strains in the pavement with time were calculated. The dissipated energy in the pavement was estimated. The simulation results suggested that high dissipated energy at the pavement surface between webs might cause the LSC there, which was not able to be explained with fatigue analysis based on the tensile strain fatigue criterion.

    The purpose of this study is to develop a method to diagnose pavement structure using surface wave propagation. This is a method of nondestructive testing. The most commonly used nondestructive testing device for pavement is called FWD. According to the FWD, pavement layer moduli are estimated from measured surface deflections assuming layer thickness is known. Surface wave method is a method to diagnose pavement structure using the characteristics that a wave propagation speed in layered media depends on a frequency. It has been said that the method has a potential to estimate not only layer moduli but layer thickness. There are two approaches to estimate those, which are a simplified method and a theoretical inversion. Surface wave test has been aimed to find soil profiles and an applicability of the method to pavement has not been fully investigated. In this study, we examined whether the past findings can be applicable to pavement and we aim to develop a method suitable for pavement. The followings are found on the applicability of the past findings :
    1. It is impossible to estimate layer thickness using a simplified method.
    2. Theoretical dispersion curve is essential for inversion but found difficult to obtain in a se of pavement. New findings from this study are as follows :
    3. Rayleigh wave speed for a surface layer can be found from the test if a high frequency wave can be generated. When the thickness is 10cm, a frequency of 20kHz is required and 50kHz when it is 5cm.
    4. There is a strong correlation between thickness of surface layer and a slope of nearly straight line in a wave length-phase velocity diagram.

    New findings and results obtained from this study are described as follows :
    Study of 1998 :
    Data processing and analysis are carried out using PIARC EVEN data. It is found that the space-frequency and multiresolution analyses enable to remove the noise from raw data of the road profile effectively and to detect the distress data of the profile. Furthermore, values of IRI decreased 40-50% by removing the noise.
    Study of 1999 :
    On the basis of results for the last year, the study on an influence of the profile on indices of the road evenness is carried out. As regards the evaluation method by the PSD and the wavelet transform, results show that the influence of the road distress data on waviness of the road surface is grasped well using both methods jointly. The effects of localized defects on the road evenness are grasped quantitatively by the ISO standard. Furthermore, we can identify the two-dimensional defects of the road surface such as cracks by the two-dimensional wavelet analysis.
    Study of 2000 :
    From the former results, a protocol for the monitoring the integrity of the road evenness is proposed. A process for the monitoring is :
    1) Collection of the data for longitudinal road profile
    2) Space-frequency analysis and examination of the homogeneity of the data
    3) Removal of the noise from the data and detecting the distress data
    4) Inspection of the influence of the distress data on road evenness using the multiresolution analysis
    5) Decision-making for the maintenance and repair of the surface by before and aft analysis

    近年、都心部の気温がその周辺部に比べて高温になる、いわゆるヒートアイランド現象が問題となっている。ヒートアイランド現象が夜間に多く報告されることや、都市の乾燥化の原因になっていることを考えると、地表面を覆っている舗装の影響は決して無視することのできない要因となっている。そうした中、従来の密粒度アスファルト舗装に代わる舗装としてポーラスアスファルト舗装が注目されている。この舗装体は、連続した空隙を持つ多孔質な構造であるため雨水を速やかに透水するという特徴を持ち、また従来の密粒度アスファルト舗装に比べて間隙率が大きいため熱容量が小さいという性質もある。そこで本研究では、ポーラスアスファルト舗装の熱的特性を調べた上で、舗装が大気を加熱する熱量を算出し、密粒度アスファルト舗装と比べてどの程度の熱的な違いが現れるかを調べた。
    まず、ポーラスアスファルト混合物、密粒度アスファルト混合物、コンクリートについて、表面の色を種々に変えて、表面温度と赤外放射量の関係および気温と大気放射量の関係を調べたところ、各物質の違い、色の違いについては、はっきりした違いは現れないことがわかった。すなわち、大気への影響を考えると舗装の違いによる影響といったものは少なく、舗装体の温度を低くすることが赤外放射量を少なくすることにつながるといえる。また、地上の舗装を用いた観測による大気からの赤外放射量、室内実験による舗装表面の熱伝達率を風速の関数として定量化した。
    以上のようにして実験と観測から求めた混合物の種々の熱特性を用いて、舗装体の表面温度からの赤外放射量、顕熱輸送量を算出し、大気に吸収される熱量を求めた。その結果、昼間はポーラスアスファルト舗装からより多くの顕熱輸送があること、各舗装体からの赤外放射量にはそれほど変わった変化は見られないこと、その結果総合的に、ポーラスアスファルト舗装からは夜間より少ない熱量が放出されていることがわかった。これより、ポーラスアスファルト舗装を採用した場合、夜間のヒートアイランド現象の抑制にはつながることが期待できるといえる。ただし、ポーラスアスファルト舗装が大気の温度上昇をどの程度抑えることができるか、またその温度差が上昇気流を抑えることができるかといったことについては、今後さらに細かいデータを収集し、気象学的な研究を進める必要がある。

    Rutting is considered one of the most serious distresses which occur in the surface of the flexible pavement, and taking it in consideration can be an important matter for pavement design in terms of economy, safety, and serviceability. Generally, there are two causes of Rutting. One is the wearing of the surface due to studded tires or tire chain, and another is viscous flow of the asphalt mixture under comparatively high temperature. The main object of this research is to make the latter type of rutting quantitatively clear.
    In this study, the wheel tracking test with a pneumatic tire was especially adopted to simulate the field pavement condition, and the viscous flow characteristics of asphalt mixture was measured by means of three dimensional photographic analysis developed by aerial surveying. As a result of the precise measurements, it was found that the mixture moved to the unloaded part and swelled at the unloaded part, and that the overall behavior can be expressed by the plane strain analysis better than axial symmetric solution which has been commonly employed for this type of analysis.
