    <jats:p>We showed two demonstrations of the local charge carrier dynamics measurements of photocatalytic materials using our recently developed time-resolved phase-contrast microscopic technique combined with the clustering analyses. In this microscopic time-resolved technique, we observed the charge carrier dynamics via the refractive index change instead of the luminescence or absorption change, where we could often observe non-radiative charge carrier processes such as charge carrier trapping and non-radiative relaxation. By the clustering analyses of all the pixel-by-pixel responses, we could extract various different charge carrier dynamics because photocatalytic materials have inhomogeneity on surfaces and the charge carrier behavior depends on the local structure and species. Even for typical photocatalytic materials, titanium oxide and hematite, we could recognize various charge carrier dynamics, which cannot be differentiated by the general fitting procedure for the averaged time response. We could categorize the surface-trapped charge carriers (holes and electrons) and bulk carriers in the nanosecond to millisecond order, which indicates that this analytical procedure will play an important role in understanding the charge carrier dynamics for various photocatalytic materials.</jats:p>

    BaTaO2N responds to visible light up to 650 nm and exhibits photocatalytic activity during the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions. However, the difficulty in promoting both processes simultaneously hinders the realization of overall water splitting (OWS) over this material. Herein, we demonstrate the activation and stabilization of BaTaO2N-based photocatalysts for visible-light-driven OWS by combining flux-assisted nitridation with Mg doping and co-loading of Cr2O3/(Na)Rh and IrO2 co-catalysts. RbCl-assisted nitridation produced single-crystal BaTaO2N particles doped with Mg and so promoted charge transfer to the co-catalysts. The coloading of Cr2O3/(Na)Rh and IrO2 at moderate temperatures as co-catalysts to promote the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively, allowed the BaTaO2N photocatalyst to evolve hydrogen and oxygen simultaneously from water. This work highlights the importance of carefully tuning semiconducting and catalytic properties to realize effective charge transfer when preparing narrow-bandgap oxynitrides for OWS.

    Abstract

    Artificial photosynthesis of H2O2 using earth-abundant water and oxygen is a promising approach to achieve scalable and cost-effective solar fuel production. Recent studies on this topic have made significant progress, yet are mainly focused on using  organic polymers. This set of photocatalysts is susceptible to potent oxidants (e.g. hydroxyl radical) that are inevitably formed during H2O2 generation. Here, we report an inorganic Mo-doped faceted BiVO4 (Mo:BiVO4) system that is resistant to radical oxidation and exhibits a high overall H2O2 photosynthesis efficiency among inorganic photocatalysts, with an apparent quantum yield of 1.2% and a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.29% at full spectrum, as well as an apparent quantum yield of 5.8% at 420 nm. The surface-reaction kinetics and selectivity of Mo:BiVO4 were tuned by precisely loading CoOx and Pd on {110} and {010} facets, respectively. Time-resolved spectroscopic investigations of photocarriers suggest that depositing select cocatalysts on distinct facet tailored the interfacial energetics between {110} and {010} facets and enhanced charge separation in Mo:BiVO4, therefore overcoming a key challenge in developing efficient inorganic photocatalysts. The promising H2O2 generation efficiency achieved by delicate design of catalyst spatial and electronic structures sheds light on applying robust inorganic particulate photocatalysts to artificial photosynthesis of H2O2.

    Abstract

    Oxynitride photocatalysts hold promise for renewable solar hydrogen production via water splitting owing to their intense visible light absorption. Cocatalyst loading is essential for activation of such oxynitride photocatalysts. However, cocatalyst nanoparticles form aggregates and exhibit weak interaction with photocatalysts, which prevents eliciting their intrinsic photocatalytic performance. Here, we demonstrate efficient utilization of photoexcited electrons in a single-crystalline particulate BaTaO2N photocatalyst prepared with the assistance of RbCl flux for H2 evolution reactions via sequential decoration of Pt cocatalyst by impregnation-reduction followed by site-selective photodeposition. The Pt-loaded BaTaO2N photocatalyst evolves H2 over 100 times more efficiently than before, with an apparent quantum yield of 6.8% at the wavelength of 420 nm, from a methanol aqueous solution, and a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 0.24% in Z-scheme water splitting. Enabling uniform dispersion and intimate contact of cocatalyst nanoparticles on single-crystalline narrow-bandgap particulate photocatalysts is a key to efficient solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

    Abstract

    Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), as a green fuel and oxidant, has drawn increasing attention in the energy and environmental research. Compared with the traditional anthraquinone process, the electrochemical (EC) and photoelectrochemical (PEC) syntheses of H2O2 are cost‐effective and environmentally friendly. In order to construct membraneless EC/PEC devices for the full H2O2 synthesis, anodic H2O2 production by water oxidation, which is less developed than cathodic H2O2 generation, is highly desirable. Here, we review recent developments for the EC/PEC H2O2 production by water oxidation, including fundamental aspects, benchmarking activity evaluation, material/catalyst selection, and strategies for increasing selectivity, efficiency, and accumulation. Furthermore, we discuss the challenges and outlook of water oxidation for H2O2 production, especially device‐level development, accumulation and stability, and industrial applications. Our review is intended to stimulate studies further improving EC/PEC H2O2 production.

    Significance

    Photocatalysts frequently require simultaneous loading of oxidative and reductive cocatalysts to achieve both efficient half-reactions within a single material. Nevertheless, unregulated loading and distribution of two cocatalysts will result in direct contact between oxidation and reduction centers, leading to detrimental charge recombination. This research presents a center/edge approach to load two redox cocatalysts with controlled physical separation in atomistic scale using single-atom architecture. This spatial separation is critical for enhancing surface charge separation and achieving efficient H 2 O 2 production. We report that redox cocatalysts are spatially separated on a two-dimensional (2D) photocatalyst, which opens an approach for achieving both efficient oxidation and reduction reactions on 2D photocatalysts.

    Photocatalyst sheets consisting of H2 evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and O2 evolution photocatalyst (OEP) particles applied to an underlying conductive layer show promise with regard to promoting efficient and scalable water splitting. One of the most important challenges in enhancing the performance of such systems is establishing efficient charge transfer between photocatalyst particles that are often thickly stacked on the conductive layer. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) is investigated as an additional solid mediator to the conductive layer to bridge particulate photocatalysts and thus ensure effective charge transfer. Photocatalyst sheets made of RhCrOx/LaMg1/3Ta2/3O2N as the HEP and BiVO4:Mo as the OEP are applied to an Au layer together with RGO. The activity of this system is 3.5 times greater following the incorporation of the RGO. Charaterization analyses reveal that RhCrOx/LaMg1/3Ta2/3O2N particles tens of nanometers in size are fixed on larger, micrometer‐sized, BiVO4:Mo particles by RGO photoreduced from GO in situ. The RGO facilitates charge transfer between particles that are distant from the underlying Au layer and thus involves more photocatalyst particles in the water splitting reaction. It is concluded that the incorporation of conductive materials into the photocatalyst particle layer can effectively enhance the water splitting activity of photocatalyst sheets.

    Photocatalytic water splitting using particulate semiconductors is a potentially scalable and economically feasible technology for converting solar energy into hydrogen. Z-scheme systems based on two-step photoexcitation of a hydrogen evolution photocatalyst (HEP) and an oxygen evolution photocatalyst (OEP) are suited to harvesting of sunlight because semiconductors with either water reduction or oxidation activity can be applied to the water splitting reaction. However, it is challenging to achieve efficient transfer of electrons between HEP and OEP particles. Here, we present photocatalyst sheets based on La- and Rh-codoped SrTiO3 (SrTiO3:La, Rh; ref. 8) and Mo-doped BiVO4 (BiVO4:Mo) powders embedded into a gold (Au) layer. Enhancement of the electron relay by annealing and suppression of undesirable reactions through surface modification allow pure water (pH 6.8) splitting with a solar-to-hydrogen energy conversion efficiency of 1.1% and an apparent quantum yield of over 30% at 419 nm.     Abstract

    The mechanism and kinetics of synergetic effect in TiO2/O3/UV process on H‐acid degradation were investigated. The experimental results showed that H‐acid removal rate of TiO2/O3/UV process was the highest among TiO2/UV, O3/UV and TiO2/O3/UV processes. The investigation of reactions with suitable active species scavengers confirmed that H‐acid was mainly oxidised by ozone and holes on TiO2 in the TiO2/O3/UV process. The recombination between holes and electrons in TiO2 reduced in the presence of ozone, as indicated by fluorescence emission spectra. Moreover, the intermediates generated during H‐acid oxidation in various processes were analysed by LC/MSD trap. It is proposed that H‐acid was oxidised to polyhydroxy aromatics, benzene carboxylic acids and quinoids in the first step. Then, saturated aliphatics carboxylic acids were formed and mineralised to inorganic compounds through the Photo‐Kolbe reaction. Finally, a kinetic study on TiO2/UV, O3/UV and TiO2/O3/UV processes was conducted and it was confirmed that both ozonation and photocatalytic activity were improved in TiO2/O3/UV process because of the synergetic effect.

    Amorphous oxide film was prepared on the titanium substrate by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technology in acidic electrolyte consisting of tungstate and then subject to calcination in air. Films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X‐ray, X‐ray diffraction, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, and UV‐Vis DRS before and after calcination, respectively. Calcined film consisted of anatase and WO3, showing more open structure compared with uncalcined film. Furthermore, the absorption edge of calcined film was shifted to visible light region and the recombination of photo‐induced carriers was inhibited effectively, resulting that WO3/TiO2 composite film produced by PEO technology and calcination should be effective as a visible‐light‐responsive photocatalyst.

    SrTiO3の単結晶に対して、マイクロ波光導電減衰法によるキャリア再結合現象を観測した。その実験で得られた信号に対して、キャリアの拡散と再結合を考慮した数値計算をフィッティングすることにより、SrTiO3単結晶の内部と表面の再結合速度の切り分けに成功した。ここでは波長の異なる2種類のレーザーを用いた測定により、キャリアの分布を変化させ、それに応じた計算モデルを用いることにより、その切り分けを成功させたが波長が2種類のレーザを用いたフィッティングのため、得られた値の精度が若干悪かった。そのため現在、斜め研磨により膜厚を変化させた単結晶を用いた実験と解析により、さらに高い精度での表面再結合速度の見積もりをしており、結果が出つつある。この表面再結合の高精度評価については、近く論文発表する予定である。
    またSrTiO3単結晶に対するNbドーピングの影響も時間分解フォトルミネッセンスにより観測し、バンドギャップ内の準位を仮定した速度方程式により、実験結果を再現した。その結果、Nbドーピングによる準位は空間的にはSrTiO3材料内部に存在し、エネルギー的には価電子帯近傍に存在することがわかり、この準位がキャリア再結合の温度依存性を生み出していることが判明した。
    以上のようにSrTiO3光触媒のエネルギー変換効率を向上させる材料設計に必要な、表面と内部の再結合を切り分けて定量化するという目標に対して、確実に成果が得られてきている。
