This study investigated the crack growth behavior of porous polymer membranes, experimentally and numerically, in order to clarify the criterion of crack growth. A notch was introduced into the membrane as an initial crack (pre-crack) and a uniaxial loading was applied for the stable crack propagation. During the test, crack propagation behavior was observed using a CCD camera and Digital Image Correlation (DIC) method. The strain around the pre-crack tip at the onset of crack propagation was measured experimentally using DIC method. It was clarified that large-scale yielding developed before the onset of crack growth. The stable crack propagation was observed for all tensile tests. In parallel, a homogenized model that mimicked porous polymer membrane was created using finite element method (FEM) in order to investigate stress/strain distribution around the crack tip. This study employed the yield criterion proposed by Deshpande and Fleck. The computed strain distribution was compared with that of experiment, showing a good agreement each other. By using strain distribution from DIC method and FEM computation, J-integral value was calculated to investigate the criterion of crack growth. Regardless of the initial crack length, it is found that the J-integral value at the initiation of crack growth becomes constant for all tests. It is concluded that we successfully determined the criterion of crack propagation of porous polymer membrane. Therefore, our study using DIC experiment and FEM computation is useful to clarify the crack growth behavior of porous polymer membrane and determines the criterion of crack propagation.

In this paper, we propose a parameter estimation method for the three-parameter lognormal distribution based on Type-II right censored data. In the proposed method, under mild conditions, the estimates always exist uniquely in the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. Through Monte Carlo simulations, we further show that the proposed method performs very well compared to a prominent method of estimation in terms of bias and root mean squared error (RMSE) in small-sample situations. Finally, two examples based on real data sets are presented for illustrating the proposed method.

For the three-parameter gamma distribution, it is known that the method of moments as well as the maximum likelihood method have difficulties such as non-existence in some range of the parameters, convergence problems, and large variability. For this reason, in this article, we propose a method of estimation based on a transformation involving order statistics from the sample. In this method, the estimates always exist uniquely over the entire parameter space, and the estimators also have consistency over the entire parameter space. The bias and mean squared error of the estimators are also examined by means of a Monte Carlo simulation study, and the empirical results show the small-sample superiority in addition to the desirable large sample properties.

The method is an extension of the isotonic regression and relaxes the restriction the isotonic regression has. A Monte Carlo simulation study shows that the proposed estimators perform better than the conventional estimators in terms of root mean squared error. Finally, we present two examples to illustrate the method of inference developed here.

The multi-objective network model can be applied to common problems with many conditions, for example, optimal routing of a network connection to the Internet services, optimally scheduling of a production and distribution systems, and multistage-structured modeling for supply chain management systems, etc. The shortest path problem is an optimization problem for finding the shortest path connecting two specific nodes of a directed or undirected graph. When considering not only the distances between the nodes but also other information, for example, toll, fuel cost, or gradient, the problem is formulated as a multi-objective shortest path problem that involves multiple conflicting objective functions. To solve the optimization problem of multi-objective network is difficult because the multiple objectives have to be simultaneously optimized. Thus, few algorithms for this problem have been proposed. In this study, we use a three-objective shortest path problem to find the shortest path between two terminal nodes on a network, and we propose three efficient algorithms for obtaining the Pareto solutions based on the extended Dijkstra's algorithm. We use our algorithms to find the partial group of all Pareto solutions. The results of the numerical experiments suggest that the proposed algorithms reduce the computing time and the memory size for obtaining the Pareto solutions. In addition, we show the algorithms could find almost set of solution in the Pareto solutions.

  • Fast algorithm for optimal arrangement problems of multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system Reviewed

In many practical situations, the states of the systems and their components are assumed to take more than two different levels, ranging from working perfectly to complete failre. In a multi-state system, both the system and the components are allowed to be in M+1 possible states, where M is a positive integer that represents the system or components in a state working perfectly. while zero is a state of complete failure. Therefore, the multi-state system reliability model provides more flexibility for the modeling of equipment conditions. In this study, we discuss the multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system. This system is applicable to the quality control problem for batch products, preventive maintenance problem for oil pipeline systems, and similar items. For the consecutive-kout-of-n:F system, the optimal arrangement problem, where the solution is obtained by the arrangement of components with maximum system reliability, is one of the most important problems in this system. So, we consider the optimal component arrangement for a multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system that has the maximum expectation values for the system state distribution when these components are arranged in positions in the system. The multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system consists of ii components arranged along a linear path. As the number of components n increases, the number of calculations to obtain the exact solution to the optimal component arrangement problems becomes large. Therefore, in this study, first, we propose an algorithm for obtaining the exact solution for optimal arrangement problems in multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems. It is possible to solve the problems if the expectations for all arrangements are calculated. However, we have to calculate the expected values for many arrangements. We propose an algorithm, which is based on the branch-and-bound method, to obtain optimal solutions for such problems and remove operations that are not useful via certain properties of the arrangements. Next, we evaluate our proposed algorithm in terms of the computing time. The results of the numerical experiments show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient for systems where the number of components a is large.

In this paper, we consider the joint distribution of numbers in s-kind of runs in a sequence of independent trials with s possible outcomes in each trial. Though there are four ways of counting the number of runs, we focus on the non-overlapping enumeration scheme (Type I enumeration scheme), and propose an efficient algorithm for evaluating the distributions of the numbers in non-overlapping runs. We give the order of computing time and memory capacity of the proposed algorithm. Furthermore, we carry out numerical experiments to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of the conventional enumeration algorithm with respect to computing time. The results show that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the enumeration algorithm.

The situations where several population parameters need to be estimated simultaneously arise frequently in wide areas of applications, including reliability modeling. survival analysis and biological study. In this paper, we propose Bayesian methods of estimation of the ordered parameters of the two exponential populations, which incorporate the prior information about the simple order restriction, but sometimes breaks the order restriction. A simulation study shows that the proposed estimators are more efficient (in terms of mean square errors) than the isotonic regression of the maximum likelihood estimators with equal weights. An illustrative example is finally presented.

In this paper, first, we propose a new recursive algorithm for evaluating generalized multi-state k-out-of-n:F systems. This recursive algorithm can be applied to the systems even though the states of all components; in the system are assumed to be non-i.i.d. random variables. Our algorithm is useful for any multi-state k-out-of-n:F system, including the decreasing, increasing and constant multi-state k-out-of-n:F system. Furthermore, our algorithm can evaluate the state distributions of the other non-monotonic multi-state k-out-of-n:F systems. Next, we calculate the order of computing time and memory capacity of the proposed algorithm. We perform numerical experiments in the non-i.i.d. case. The results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient for evaluating the system state distribution of multi-state k-out-of-n:F system when it is large and k(l) are small.

The gamma distribution, having location (threshold), scale and shape parameters, is used as a model for distributions of life spans, reaction time, and for other types of non-symmetrical data. It has been said that the inference for the three-parameter gamma distribution is difficult because of nonregularity in maximum likelihood estimation although numerous papers have appeared over the years. It is usual to avoid fitting the three-parameter gamma distribution and to fit the two-parameter gamma distribution to data in practice. The fitting, however, becomes poor if the threshold exists. In this article, for avoiding this problem, we propose a new estimator of the shape parameter of the gamma distribution, which does not depend on the location parameter. A simulation study shows that the proposed estimator performs better than the Nagatsuka et al. (2006) estimator when the threshold exists even though that is close to zero. The proposed method is also illustrated by an example of a maximum flood level data.

The connected-(1, 2)-or-(2, 1)-out-of-(m, n):F lattice system is included by the connected-X-out-of-(m, n):F lattice system defined by Boehme et al. [Boehme, T.K., Kossow, A., Preuss, W., 1992. A generalization of consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system. IEEE Transactions on Reliability 41, 451-457]. This system fails if and only if at least one subset of connected failed components occurs which includes at least a (1, 2)-matrix (that is, a row and two columns) or a (2, 1)-matrix(that is, two rows and a column) of failed components. This system is applied to two-dimensional network problems with adjacent constraints, and various systems, for example, a supervision system, etc.
In this paper, we propose a new recursive algorithm for evaluating of the reliability of a connected-(1, 2)-or-(2, 1)-out-of-(m,n):F lattice system. We calculate the orders of the computing time and memory size of the our algorithm. We perform a numerical experiment in order to compare our proposed algorithm with the algorithm in the previous studies. A numerical experiment shows that the proposed algorithm is more efficient than the other algorithms for evaluating the reliability of the a connected-(1,2)-or-(2, 1)-out-of-(m,n):F lattice system when n is large. In traditional reliability theory, both the system and its components are allowed to take only two possible states: working or failed. In a multi-state system, both the system and the components are allowed to be in M+1 states: 0, 1, 2,…, M, where M is a positive integer which represents a system or unit in perfect functioning state, while zero is complete failure state. A multi-state system reliability model provides more flexibility for the modeling of equipment conditions. Huang et al. (2003) proposed more general definitions of the multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F and G systems and then provide an exact algorithm for evaluating the system state distribution of decreasing multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems. Another algorithm is provided to bound the system state distribution of increasing multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F and G systems. The multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system is applicable to, for example, quality control problems. In this paper, we provide two theorems and a recursive algorithm which evaluate the system state distribution of a multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system using the theorems. These recursive formulas are useful for any multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system, including the decreasing multi-state F system, the increasing multi-state F system and other non-monotonic F systems. We calculate the order of computing time and memory capacity of the proposed algorithm and show that, in cases when the number of components n is large, the proposed algorithm is more efficient than other algorithms. A numerical experiment shows that when n is large, the proposed method is efficient for evaluating the system state distribution of multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems.

Assoc. 90:1041–1054], a new model for the analysis of lifetime data in the presence of a covariate is presented. The model is derived based on physical and statistical considerations. In this article, we focus on estimation of the power parameter of this model, and propose the new methods for estimation based on the location-scale-free transformation.

In this article we present a new method of inference for the three-parameter Weibull distribution. The method enables us to estimate only the shape parameter independent of the location and scale parameters. The methodology is helpful because the difficulty of estimation of the Weibull parameters is dependent on the existence of the location parameter. A simulation study shows that in the case that the location parameter γ is equal or close to zero, the estimator proposed by us is better than MLE for two-parameter Weibull distribution. The simplicity of the method is shown by an example.

In traditional reliability theory, both the system and its components are allowed to take two possible states: either working or failed. In the binary context, a system with n components in sequence is called a consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system if the system fails whenever at least k consecutive components in the system fail. Many studies have appeared over the years dealing with the reliability evaluation of binary consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system. For consecutive-k-out-of-n: F system, one of the most important problem in this system is the optimal arrangement problem wherein the solution is obtained by the arrangement of components with maximum system reliability. On the other hand, in the multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system, both the components and the system are allowed to be in M+1 possible state. One of the important problem in the multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system is the optimal arrangement problem wherein the solution is obtained by the arrangement of components with maximum expectation of system states. (Note: k means the number of consecutive components, whose failed components lead to the system failure. Though the number is not a scalar and should be expressed as a vector (k(1), k(2), ... , k(M)).) In general, the optimal arrangements depend on the values of component state probabilities. It is known, however, that for some case, optimal arrangements do not depend on the values of component state probabilities but on the ranks of component state probabilities. In this study, we consider optimal component arrangement for a multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F system which maximize the expectation of the system state when these components are arranged to the positions in the system. First, we investigated characteristics of optimal arrangements in multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems when M=3 and maximum k(l) (l=1,2,3) is 2, by using analytical approach. We proposed characteristics of optimal arrangement in the systems when n=3, 4 and 5. From these results, we obtained characteristics and trends of conditional optimal arrangements with M=3 and maximum k(l)s are 2. Next, we investigated characteristics of optimal arrangements in multi-state consecutive-k-out-of-n:F systems by using heuristic approach. From these results, we obtained a trend of optimal arrangements with other parameters.

A least squares procedure for parameter estimation of the three-parameter Weibull distribution based on the doubly type-II censored samples are proposed. The estimate of the shape parameter can be optained by minimizing a function of only one parameter and the estimates of the location and scale parameters can be obtained by two closed-formed formulas, by using the proposed method. The proposed method has advantages compared to the conventional estimators: (1) the bias of the estimators can be smaller for small samples, (2) the estimates can be obtained with higher probability, (3) the estimates are much easier to obtain computationally. © 2008 IEEE.
