    In this study, we propose an effective method using deep learning to strengthen real-time vessel carbon dioxide emission management. We propose a method to predict real-time carbon dioxide emissions of the vessel in three steps: (1) convert the trajectory data of the fixed time interval into a spatial–temporal sequence, (2) apply a long short-term memory (LSTM) model to predict the future trajectory and vessel status data of the vessel, and (3) predict the carbon dioxide emissions. Automatic identification system (AIS) database of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessel were selected as the sample and we reconstructed the trajectory data with a fixed time interval using cubic spline interpolation. Applying the interpolated AIS data, the carbon dioxide emissions of the vessel were calculated based on the International Towing Tank Conference (ITTC) recommended procedures. The experimental results are twofold. First, it reveals that vessel emissions are currently underestimated. This study clearly indicates that the actual carbon dioxide emissions are higher than those reported. The finding offers insight into how to accurately measure the emissions of vessels, and hence, better execute a greenhouse gases (GHGs) reduction strategy. Second, the LSTM model has a better trajectory prediction performance than the recurrent neural network (RNN) model. The errors of the trajectory endpoint and carbon dioxide emissions were small, which shows that the LSTM model is suitable for spatial–temporal data prediction with excellent performance. Therefore, this study offers insights to strengthen the real-time management and control of vessel greenhouse gas emissions and handle those in a more efficient way.

    In this paper, we introduce circular region associated with the road network on which one can move toward certain n directions intersecting equal angle. We call the shortest length between two points through the above network as n-directional distance. We calculate n-directional distance assuming that origin and destination are uniformly independently distributed. In addition, we derive the average and variance of the distribution. Furthermore, the ratio of n-directional distance to the line distance is analyzed. Finally, we fit the distribution derived to the real road network of five towns in Tokyo metropolitan area. Results indicate that proposed distribution explains road distance well.

    The transportation plan of Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games assumes that spectators will take public transportation to venue, but massive congestion on commuter train is forecasted due to the capacity of train network in Tokyo metropolitan area, especially at terminal stations and the stations near the Olympic main stadium. We propose the entrance system for Olympic main stadium with utilization of Shinjuku Gyoen Park from Shinjuku Station to the gate of the stadium as security check point and waiting point. We formulate the trip assignment model of spectators based on time-expanded network to evaluation of the flow planning for spectators. We estimate the travel time for each spectator passing through the park, waiting spectators at the gate and the required area for gate checking using this model with travel demand of spectators.

    This paper proposes mathematical models to evaluate the effects of shuttle bus system on visitors' traffic flow to the Tokyo Bay zone during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics. We consider shuttle buses departing from major railway stations in the Tokyo Metropolitan area and examine their ability to relieve traffic concentration on railway lines providing access to the Tokyo Bay zone. We construct a space-time network for modeling actual railway services in the Tokyo Metropolitan area and extend it by introducing links representing shuttle buses. We focus on a particular day during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics and evaluate how visitors' traffic flow changes after the introduction of shuttle bus services using the proposed models. One of the results show that shuttle buses contribute to relieving traffic congestion on the Yurikamome Line departing from Shimbashi station.

    In Japan, energy and natural resources are imported by the maritime transport. It is, therefore, necessary to consider both procurement of overseas energy resources and risk management of resource transportation under the situation where international geopolitical structure faces a big change. In this paper, we consider both country risk and transportation risk including chokepoint risk and marine peril. In this analysis, we evaluate risks using two mathematical models. The objective of the former model is minimization of a country risk using portfolio theory. The objective of the latter model is minimization of a transportation risk using binomial distribution. We use import experience calculated by ship movement database and sea lane network as input data. Using mathematical programming solver, we show that there are export countries and transportation which make both country risk and transportation risk decrease without additional transport cost.

    The number of visitor arrivals to Japan in 2015 was over 19 millions, which is the highest yearly number ever recorded. Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) forecasts growth of the number of visitor arrivals until 2020. Recent years, a short supply in accommodations has occurred in Japan. In this paper, we forecast demand and supply for accommodations during the period of Tokyo 2020 Olympic by using Tokyo 2020 games foundation plan and travel agent's website data. Then we estimate the demand-and-supply balance in accommodations. Moreover, we formulate mathematical programming model for 2-days ticket, and we show that introduction of a 2-days ticket is useful for improvement of demand-and-supply balance.

    This paper extends the maximum flow-covering location and service start time problem (MFCLSTP) by additionally imposing a minimum stay at a facility before the service can be used. The original formulation determines the locations of facilities and the start times of fixed-duration services so as to maximally cover flows of commuters who access services on the way home from work. In MFCLSTP, commuters must stay at a facility from the start of the service until the end of the service in order to consume it. Examples of such services include movies, lectures, and baseball games. There are, however, many on-demand services, which can be consumed by commuters who access the providing facility for a fixed continuous duration of a hours during any of c (>= a) open hours of the facility. To deal with this situation, we extend the definition of coverage in the original model and provide an integer programming formulation of the proposed problem. The model is applied to the Tokyo metropolitan railway network, using census data of commuter traffic for railway users in this area. Exact optimal solutions are obtained by using a mathematical optimization solver with both the original and extended problems, and the characteristics of the solutions are compared. The results show that the optimal solutions for the extended problem allow a much larger flow than the optimal solutions for the original problem do, even when a is very close to c. The locations selected for the optimal solutions of the proposed problem are seen to be much more spatially dispersed than those chosen for the original problem.

    Recently, piracy attacks occurred off the coast of Somalia and threaten the ships and vessels navigating on the sea lane between Asia and Europe. The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of geographic distribution of piracy attacks around Somalia. To achieve this purpose, we plotted the points of piracy attacks from 2005 to 2013 using Geographic Information System and analyze the distance from coast of Somalia and transit corridor in the Gulf of Aden, and Kernel Density Method.

    In this study, we define food desert area by road distance from elder person's home to his/her nearest fresh food store. Since no clear threshold for the distance is established, we give various values to the threshold value and analyze results. Then, we consider the minimum number of fresh food stores required in order to maintain the present condition. We formulate it as a capacitated multi set covering problem (CMSCR). Moreover, we propose a valuation method for a fresh food store. While previous works have proposed a solution of food desert issue, a characteristic of this study is that what we do not worsen than the present condition has the principal objective. The result of this study will be useful for municipal government.

    We propose a network flow model to study problems in commuting traffic in the railway network of the Tokyo Metropolitan area. Through this network, about seven million passengers commute, and about 7,500 trains transport them in morning rush hours. Trains are usually crowded and subject to delay caused by overcrowded passengers. In addition to the huge traffic volume, such facts intensify the situation that the commuters concentrate in commuting during short time period, traveling radial lines directing to the central district, and choosing a "better (higher speed)" train service. In order to relieve such conditions, not only investments in hardware but also soft approach are important to fully utilize the existing capacity of the network to average the number of passengers across the trains. Our model consists of a time-space network (or schedule-based network) and detailed traffic data on route choice of commuters. The former has been intensively studied to consider traffic problems where each vehicle service is operated according to a timetable. Using this network, every train services and actions of passengers can be represented by nodes and edges of the network. The latter is the questionnaire survey of commuting traffic in Metropolitan area being done in every five years. We use the survey conducted in 2005, which has about 140,000 respondents. Another important point of our model is that it is able to consider the whole railway network universally in one system.

    This paper presents a method for deriving a joint distribution of trip length and its ratio to Euclidean distance between origin and destination when a travellers' trip distribution is given. This measure is useful for analyzing the spatial structure of transportation networks in terms of energy consumption and efficiency for trips. We calculate this measure using simple city models with two types of network pattern: rectangular grid and radial-circular. Computation of this measure for road networks with node-based, link-based, and area-based demand is also shown. the results show that radial-circular network provides efficient movement for longer trips.

    In general, a three-dimensional GIS consists of two-dimensional space and height dimension or of two-dimensional space and time dimension. In this paper, we propose an algorithm to construct a three-dimensional geographic database which consists of two-dimensional space and spatial precision. The algorithm maintains correct topological structure. Using the three-dimensional geographic database, we can obtain a map of arbitrary scale. The algorithm makes it possible to integrate spatial data of various scales into a unitary spatial data.

    The label placement problem is one of the most important problems in geographic information systems, cartography, graph drawing, and graphical interface design. In this paper, we considered the label size maximization problem for points with axes-parallel rectangular labels that correspond to character strings and have different widths based on the number of characters. We propose an algorithm for computing the optimum size for the label size maximization problem in the 2-position model and a polynomial time algorithm for the problem in the 4-position model. Our algorithm cannot obtain the maximum value in the 4-position model because the label size maximization problem in the 4-position model is NP-hard. However, our algorithm is efficient in practice, as shown by computational experiments. Further, computational results for JR trains, subways and major private railroads in Tokyo are presented.

    In the Geographic Information Systems(GIS), there are a lot of optimization problems. In order to solve such problems, efficient data structures and algorithms that deal with a large amount of GIS data are strongly required. We developed data structures and algorithms for optimization problems in GIS, for example, a problem of deciding school-commuting routes for elementary school students, facility location problems in times of disaster, etc. We also analyzed marine transportation using a time-space network. Moreover, from a theoretical point of view, we proposed two approximation algorithms for a minimum maximal matching problem that have a strong relationship with minimum maximal flow problem in traffic flow.

    We constructed a digital shipping route network of ships based on a shipping route chart, and we developed an simulator to do spatial-temporal analysis of international and domestic logistics using the vessel movements database. Then, we found the ports of call pattern of each vessel and considered the travelling salesman problem for ports of call. Moreover, we analyzed to influence that the change in the transportation network, for example, the detour for the pirate evasion and the use of the Arctic Ocean sea route, gave to the ports of call pattern.
