    We developed a compact system for measuring the flow rate of cerebrospinal fluid in a shunt tube using the laser-two-focus velocimeter with air lumps injected. The range of 3 to 60 ml/h was successfully measured.

    We made direct measurements of temperature-dependent refractive indices of undoped and MgO-doped stoichiometric LiTaO3 to obtain the Sellmeier equations. The thermo-optic coefficients are much larger than those reported by indirect measurements.

    We absolutely measure the second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of LaBGeO5 at the fundamental wavelength of 532 nm. The determined coefficients are d33=1.15, d22=1.41, d31=d32=0.75 and d11=0.55 pm/V, which are inconsistent with those previously measured at 1064 nm.

    A medium-power all-solid-state diode-pumped Nd : YAG laser, passively Q-switched employing Cr^<4+> : YAG as saturable absorber and intra-cavity frequency doubled by a LBO crystal, has been developed. The device produces 263-μJ, 87.8-ns pulses of 〜3.0kW peak power, with 1.0-W average power output at 532nm. The dynamics of the pulse formation is discussed by introducing a nonlinear loss term caused by the frequency doubler into the coupled rate equations describing the operation of saturable absorber passively Q-switched lasers.

    We have succeeded in the growth of lithium tetraborate with periodic twin structure forming during growth by applying an electric field or manipulating a growth orientation relative to the twin boundary. Since lithium tetraborate is not ferroelectric, the conventional method for the formation of the quasi-phase matching structure (QPM) is not possible. By revealing the formation mechanism of (100) and (010) twins, we managed alternative twin formation with these orientations, which made the periodic twin structure with small period. This structure can be served as a QPM structure and the secondary harmonic generation of Nd:YAG laser was successfully obtained. It is a remarkable result that the QPM formation is possible for non-ferroelectric material.

    By employing a new concept of stoichiometry of a material where the activity of any constituent element could be unity, we developed a new lithium tantalate with MgO doping, cs-MgO:LT (Li2O: Ta2O5: MgO = 40.8:50.0:9.2), that is stoichiometric and coincident with the congruent composition. Because of this coincidence, cs-MgO:LT does not yield crystallization electromotive force and does not show segregation during growth even for ionic species. A bulk crystal was grown from the melt of the cs-MgO:LT composition via the Czochralski (CZ) method, and it showed excellent compositional homogeneity, which was proved by the constant distribution of the Curie temperature throughout the crystal.

    We have realized a deep-UV laser, which is attractive for high-precision machining and measurement applications, by fabricating a newly-structured highly efficient wavelength-conversion device using a new method.
    One of popular UV-generating nonlinear-optical crystals, BBO, suffers from the walk-off effect which separates the generated UV beam from the input laser beam, drastically decreasing the conversion efficiency. We proposed a new structure which compensates for the walk-off effect, and fabricated the device using the room-temperature-bonding technique. We have then obtained twice the UV power of that from a bulk crystal. It is expected that one-order higher UV power can be obtained from the device with improved structures.

    We have accurately measured the second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of SiC, which is expected to be a material for next-generation high-power frequency-conversion devices. We carried out the measurements with several combinations of different manufacturers, polytypes, surface orientations of the samples, and different measurement techniques at the fundamental wavelength of 1.064 μm. The same accurate values were obtained for the same polytype samples, and d33 of 4H-SiC was found to be 6 % smaller than that of 6H-SiC. The magnitudes of the nonlinear-optical coefficients determined in this research should be useful for precise design of high-power and highly efficient frequency-conversion devices using SiC.

    1. We have optimized device fabrication process for AlGaAs waveguiding QPM devices. Corrugations, a major cause of the large propagation loss, are shown to be caused by the anisotropic surface diffusion of Ga atoms. We have achieved almost corrugation-free regrowth by using a low-temperature MBE process.
    2. GaP sublattice reversal epitaxy has been successfully demonstrated for the first time. AlGaP-based QPM devices can be used with high-power 1-μm pump lasers because of their small two-photon absorption coefficients.
    3. Conversion efficiencies attainable in high-index-contrast AlGaAs waveguiding QPM devices has been theoretically investigated for the first time. We have shown that normalized conversion efficiencies over 40,000 %/W/cm2 can be obtained for SHG for 1.5 μm fundamental light.
    4. We have proposed a new QPM scheme in bent waveguides utilizing periodical sign reversal with periodic change of propagation direction by 90° instead of periodical inversion of crystal structures.
    5. We have investigated polarity characterization techniques of GaN crystals and succeeded in fabricating periodically inverted GaN films. In addition, nonlinear optical properties of GaN and SiC have been characterized in detail, by using high quality bulk single-crystalline samples.
    6. A 300-W CW operation of Yb:YAG/ceramic YAG hybrid edge-pumped laser has been demonstrated. By optimizing laser cavity configuration, much improved transverse mode characteristics, M^2 = 17, has been achieved for 230-W CM operation.

    We have measured second-order nonlinear-optical coefficients of stoichiometric LiNbO_3, the high-quality crystals of which have been recently developed.
    The measurement was performed at the fundamental wavelengths of 1.06 and 1.31μm. Undoped and MgO-doped crystals were grown by Oxide company and Hitachi Metals company. They were cut and polished to the wedge samples with the wedge angle of 〜0.15 degree, and the fundamental light was normally focused onto the sample. The dependence of the generated second-harmonic power on the sample thickness, or Maker fringe, was measured. We fully took account of the multiple-reflection effect in the nearly plane-parallel-plate samples.
    The accurate refractive indices which are essential for analyzing the data are not available for stoichiometric LiNbO_3. If the wedge angle is known, the refractive indices can be obtained by the measurement of the Maker-fringe period. Because it is difficult to directly measure the wedge angle within 10^<-3> accuracy, we estimated the wedge angle and the refractive indices by measurement of the period of interference caused by the multiple reflection in the sample, and of dependence of the transmittance on the sample displacement in the cross-Nicole configuration, both at the fundamental and the second-harmonic wavelengths. This enabled us to determine the nonlinear-optical coefficients with the accuracy of better than 5%, and we found that the nonlinear-optical coefficients of stoichiometric LiNbO_3 and MgO:LiNbO_3 are same with that of congruent ones within the measurement accuracy.

    The aim of our research is to clear the new direction of ceramic laser. Especially, to create the functional optical devices for improved laser system, we have tried to control the grain and domain boundary as following ;
    (1)Research of grain boundary control for the high-transparent ceramic material : To design the spectral property, we have developed disordered Nd : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12> and Yb : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>. Additionally, by combining Nd : Y_3Al_5O_<12> and Nd : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>, we have add the new function.
    (2)Research of spectroscopic analysis and laser design : To establish the design criteria, we have characterized the spectroscopic property of these laser ceramics.
    (3)Wavelength extension : To overcome the limited lasing wavelength, we have developed the fabrication method of new field poling method for periodically poled MgO deoped LiNbO_3 (PPMgLN). By using 5-mm thickness and 36-mm long PPMgLN, we have succeeded in 100-mJ and 70% optical parametric oscillation.
    (4)Hot band laser upper level direct pumping : We have demonstrated the quantum defect improvement by applying the laser upper level direct pumping to these ceramic lasers.
    (5)Development of the high brightness microchip ceramic laser : By using Yb : Y_3Sc_XAl_<(5-X)>O_<12>, we have demonstrated the ultrafast pulse generation of 280fs, which is the world record in our knowledge. Otherwise, CW output power of 340 W has been obtained in the Yb : YAG single crystal and YAG ceramics composite structure, which corresponded to 57 kW/cm^3 output power density.
    This year, we have published over 30 reviewed papers, 7 invited papers of international conference, and so on. Moreover, we have received "2004 Commendation by the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (Person of Scientific and Technological Research Merits) " and "Medal for Advanced Research Award, The Laser Society of Japan".

    1.GaAs導波路型光パラメトリックデバイスの作製と評価
    赤外域で動作する超小型光パラメトリックデバイスを念頭に置いて,QPM周期7.6μmのGaAs/AlGaAsリッジ型導波路を作製し,長さ2mmのデバイスでパラメトリック蛍光(parametric fluorescence : PF)測定をおこなった。前年度に引き続き,デバイス特性の評価をおこない,温度チューニング特性が設計どおりであること,出力パワーが理論計算と同程度得られており,妥当な特性を発揮していることをあきらかにした。また,伝搬ロスが20dB/cm弱あり,これがデバイスの長尺化を妨げていることもわかった。
    2.波長変換デバイスにおける伝搬ロスの影響に関する検討
    差周波発生デバイス,光パラメトリックデバイス,バックワード光パラメトリックデバイスについて,伝搬ロスがその特性に与える影響をシミュレーションにより評価した。SROの光パラメトリックデバイスの場合は,共振器を構成しているため,わずかな伝播ロスが3桁にも及ぶ発振閾値の増大を招くのに対して,共振器を構成しない差周波発生デバイス,バックワード光パラメトリックデバイスにおいては数db/cmのロスの存在かにおいても発振閾値などの特性パラメータ劣化はfactor程度にとどまることがあきらかとなった。

    1.Development of "Selective Nucleation" techinique.
    We developed "selective nucleation" at an electric field of 18.7 kV/mm, lower than ever reported in LN. The SN improved the unifromity of polarizartion-reversed strucutures and efficiency in wavelength conversion of laser light.
    2.High aspect ratio in polarization reversed domains.
    High aspect ratio (depth/width) of 250-300 were obtained with optimized parameters in polarization reversal and 1mm depth was achieved for 6-8um periods, which correspond to green light generation from a commercial Nd : YAG laser in wavelength conversion.
    3.High power wavelength conversion to green light.
    Wavelength converters were fabricated in congruent lithium niobate and stoichiometric lithium tantalate (SLT). and especially. in SLT we demonstrated 4.4W green light through second-harminic generation from a pulsed Nd : YAG laser.

    As part of the "High performance widely tunable chromachip lasers" research project we have investigated new types of solid-state microchip lasers and nonlinear wavelength conversion by the Quasi-Phase-Matching process as follows :
    (1) We have demonstrated highly efficient laser oscillation using highly concentrated Nd-doped YAG ceramics by grain boundary controlling. The spectrum bandwidth was controlled by changing the composition structure : Nd : YSAG ceramics that have Al sights partially replaced by Sc has 5 times wider the gain band width compared with Nd : YAG.
    (2) A new model that describes theoretically the thermal birefringence in high power state lasers by changing the orientation of crystal axis from <111> to <110> or <100>-axis cut without any other internal optics into the optical resonator was developed. Moreover, a new pumping method that reduces the heat generation was proposed and experimentally proved.
    Directly pumping into the emitting level of Nd : YAG lasers improves the quantum defect but the absorption efficiency is poor for low concentrated Nd : YAG (1.0-at.% Nd, usually used in construction of lasers). We demonstrated that highly Nd-doped YAG ceramics has the potential to overcome this disadvantage, assuring high absorption efficiency for this new pumping scheme. Finally, simulation source code by FEM that estimate the heat generation and its thermal problem was developed.
    (3) We have developed an 'in-situ' poling system that optimizes the QPM fabrication process of MgO : LiNbO_3 that is characterized by a high damage threshold. Then we have realized a periodically poled 3-mm thick MgO : LiNbO_3. Moreover, we found the way for broadening the acceptance bandwidth by using d_31 (= d_32) instead of the normal d_33 coefficient.
    (4) During this research project were published 25 scientific papers and 6 review papers, 33 presentations were given at international meetings and 24 at domestic meetings, as well as 12 invited talks. Finally, we have received 4 awards.

    1.AlGaAs導波路型DFGデバイスの最適設計
    DWDMフォトニックネットワークのOXC用波長変換デバィスを念頭において,1.55μm帯DFGデバイスの最適設計をおこなった。その結果,SHG規格化変換効率にして600%/W/cm^2もの高効率が達成でき,100mWのポンプ光入力に対して10mmのデバイスで30%以上の効率が得られること,3dB帯域幅は40nmと十分実用的であることを示した。
    2.AlGaAs導波路型DFGデバイスの作製と評価
    CMPによってテンプレートの段差の除去について検討し,4nm以下までの平坦化に成功した。副格子交換エピタキシー法と平坦化技術を組み合わせて,1次QpM導波路型AlGaAs DFGデバイスを初めて試作した。屈折率分散データの誤差のために設計よりも位相整合波長が長波長側にシフトしてしまったために,波長変換特性は十分に評価できなかったが,伝搬損失は控えめに見積もっても20dB/cm以下と改善できていることが確認できた。また,評価光学系を最適化することによって50%近い結合効率を実現できており,現在再作製中のデバイスが完成次第,高効率波長変換動作を確認できるものと考えている。
    3.GaAs光パラメトリックデバイスの設計と作製
    GaAs QPM光パラメトリック発振器の基本設計をおこない,LD励起固体レーザ程度の光源で励起可能で2-14μmをカバーする波長可変光源が実現可能であることを明らかにした。バルク型デバイスの実現を目指して,反転ドメイン境界の垂直性を保った成長法の検討をおこない,MBEとMOVPEでデューティ比保存成長条件を特定することができた。

  • 高安定紫外波長変換をめざした水晶結晶によるツイン制御光素子の提案

    13年度には、12年度に導入した応力印加装置の改良を行い、外部ファンクションジェネレータによる電気的制御を可能にした。12年度では貫通するツインの大きさが1mm角でありこれをより精密に制御するためにパルス的応力印加を可能にした。この結果印加応力の立ち上がり時間は300ミリ秒まで短縮され、応力印加時間の短縮が可能になった。またツイン生成の際に高い核成長密度を得るために、最高温度400℃であった装置を改良し、相転移点573℃を上回る600℃までの加熱を可能にした。またこれに伴って応力印加用の高温ブロックの材質を見直し、600℃においても十分な剛性と安定性を有し、研磨の可能な超硬合金を見いだした。これを用いて応力印加用の高温ブロックを改良した。
    また13年度には、ドライエッチング技術を用いて水晶基板を掘り込み、選択的に応力を印加する方法を採用した。反応性イオンエッチングにより周期2μm、高さ1.3μmの掘り込み構造を作製することに成功している。またこの構造において周期ツイン作製のための応力分布計算も行った。周期ツインのパターニングには応力の空間分布を制御する必要があり、十分な空間変調を得るために有限要素法を用いた計算機シュミレーションが有効であった。シュミレーション結果をもとに適切な水晶基板のエッチング深さ、エッチング部の周期に対する比、応力印加装置の周期溝の形状、など、実験による最適条件の探索を行っていく。
    他方シンクロトロン放射光を利用して水晶基板の深紫外光吸収特性も評価し、基板依存性も明らかにした。

  • Wide-Spectrum Mid-IR Generation by High-Powe Solid-State Lasers

    Toward "Wide Spectrum Mid-IR Generation System" we have investigated in high average power and high peak power solid-state lasers with nonlinear wavelength conversion as following ; (1) Models for diode-pumped solid-state lasers : We applied M^2 concept to the solid-state laser optimization. The maximum slope efficiency of 58.6% was obtained in Nd : YVO_4 laser. Then we modified our model for Yb : YAG microchip and slab laser. (2) Development of high power lasers : We have developed new edge pumping scheme for power scaling in solid-state lasers. Byer group of Stan ford University has been demonstrated the edge pumped zig-zag slab laser for high-power system. In Nd : YAG slab laser we obtained 127 W output power with 57 % slope efficiency. However, the maximum power was limited below 40 W with 20 % slope efficiency in Yb : YAG slab. On the other hand, Taira group of IMS was investigated in the microchip scheme. Up to near 100 W output power with 49 % slope efficiency have been obtained in quasi-CW operation mode by edge pumped Yb : YAG microchip laser configuration. (3) Short pulse generation : In order to evaluate the potential of Yb : YAG as an ultra fast laser, we examined the tunability. With 400 μm Yb : YAG microchip we achieved the widest tunability, 〜85 nm, in Yb : YAG with high slope efficiency (60 %) and 3 W output power. This result indicates the possibility to develop under 〜100-fs (up to 〜15-fs) short pulse laser with Yb : YAG system. (3) Widely tunable mid-IR generation : The quasi-phase-matching (QPM) methods will open new horizons in the wavelength conversions fields. To improve poling methods for new QPM devices we developed in-situ poling system, then obtained a broad-band-QPM chip in periodically poled MgO : LiNbO_3. Additionally, we have held the small meeting with Prof. Byer and Prof. Fejer to discuss about the current technology and future possibility of the Solid-State Laser Systems.

    The quadratic nonlinear optical coefficients of several important materials have been absolutely determined. The materials studied include β-BaB_2O_4, CsLiB_6O_<10>, ZnSe and LiNbO_3 . The measurement was made by the non-phase-matched second-harmonic-generation method using single-mode lasers as light sources. The nonlinear optical coefficients of β-BaB_2O_4 and CsLiB_6O_<10>, both important materials for ultraviolet coherent light sources, have been determined for visible to UV second-harmonic wavelengths for the first time. The nonlinear optical coefficients of ZnSe, which is a promising material for wavelength conversion over visible to IR wavelengths, have been determined at 1.3 and 1.5 μ/m . The nonlinear optical coefficients of stoichiometric LiNbO_3 have been found to be significantly larger than those of congruent LiNbO_3.

  • Research of high-power Yb : YAG mode lock lasers for tunable short pulse lasers

    In this project we investigated in diode pumped Solid-State lasers, especially Yb : YAG lasers because it have high potential as the high power short pulse lasers, and wavelength conversion methods as following ;
    (1)Laser models for high power solid-state lasers : By using symmetric dual Nd : YAG rods we obtained 400W multi-mode output power and 163W TEM_<00> mode power. Then we applied M^2 design methods to the microchip laser system to reduce the size of laser system. Finally, we have developed 59% slope efficiency and 4.1W maximum CW output power in microchip Nd : YAG laser. Currently we investigate in the passive Q-switching to realize high brightness lasers.
    (2)Development of high performance Yb : YAG lasers : We optimized Yb : YAG microchip lasers by using M^2 design methods. With 400 μm Yb : YAG microchip we achieved the wide tunable (85 nm)laser with high slope efficiency(60%)and 3 W output power. This indicates possible to develop under 50fs short pulse laser with Yb : YAG system.
    (3)Nonlinear wavelength conversion devices : The quasi-phase-matching methods will open new horizons in the wavelength conversions fields. To improve poling methods for new QPM devices we developed in-situ poling system to optimized QPM Mg : LiNbO_3, then obtained 60W average Mid-IR power in OPO experiments.
    (4)Teraherts generations : As a wavelength conversion system, we demonstrated in 100 mW terahertz generation with bulk InAs emitter.
    (5)New laser materials : In order to enhance the performance of microchip lasers, we developed highly Nd-ion doped YAG ceramics to overcome absorption efficiency while keeping good thermo-mechanical property. With this system we obtained two or three times larger output power compared with the conventional single crystal system. Some journals and news papers carried an account of our ceramic microchip lasers.

  • β−BaB_2O_4の2次非線形光学定数の精密測定

    β-BaB_2O_4(BBO)は吸収端が190nmと短く,紫外域まで波長変換が可能な材料として実用化を目指した研究が精力的に行われている。ところが最も基本的な物理量である2次非線形光学定数の測定例がBBOでは極めて少なかった。本研究ではBBOの非線形光学定数を可視から紫外第2高調波波長の領域にわたって精密に測定し,その絶対値を決定した。
    測定試料はソニー中央研究所久保田研究室でチョクラルスキー法により成長したものを提供していただいた。基本波波長1.313μm,1.064μm,0.852μm,0.532μmにおいて,d_<22>をウェッジ法を用いた絶対測定により求めた。各波長での測定用光源には,いずれも単一縦モード連続発振で動作する,DFBレーザ,半導体レーザ励起Nd:YAGリングレーザ,Ti:サファイアレーザ,半導体レーザ励起Nd:YAG SHリングレーザをそれぞれ用いた。また,その他の独立な成分d_<33>,d_<31>,d_<15>は値が小さく上記の光源では解析に十分なパワーの第2高調波が得られなかったため,基本波光源にQスイッチNd:YAGレーザを用い,波長1.064μmでd_<22>との間で相対測定を行った。得られた測定データに対しては試料内での基本波,第2高調波の多重反射を考慮した解析を行った。
    その結果,d_<22>の絶対値は基本波波長1.313,1.064,0.852,0.532μmでそれぞれ1.9,2.2,2.3,2.6pm/Vと決定した。また,1.064μmでの相対測定から得られた他の成分の絶対値は,それぞれd_<33>=0.04pm/V,d_<31>=0.04Pm/V,d_<15>=0.03pm/Vで,いずれもd_<22>の2%以下と小さいことがわかった。各波長でのd_<22>の値から求められるMillerのΔの値は測定誤差(±5%以下)を考慮しても波長に対して一定であるとは言えず,したがって,本研究のように各波長毎に非線形光学定数を測定することが正しい値を得るためには重要である。
    BBOに限らず紫外第2高調波波長での非線形光学定数の測定例はほとんど無く,今回,特に0.532μmで非線形光学定数を決定したことにより,今後BBOを紫外第2高調波波長における参照物質として用いることができる。
