    In this study, the diffraction of a plane wave by an infinitely long strip, having the same impedance on both faces with a width of 2a is investigated. The diffracted field is expressed by an integral in terms of the induced electric and magnetic current densities. Applying the boundary condition to the integral representation of the scattered field, the problem is formulated as simultaneous integral equations satisfied by the electric and magnetic current density functions. By obtaining the Fourier transform of the integral equations the unknown current density functions can be expanded into the infinite series containing the Chebyshev polynomials. This leads to two infinite systems of linear algebraic equations satisfied by the expansion coefficients. These coefficients are determined numerically with high accuracy via appropriate truncation of the systems of linear algebraic equations. Evaluating the scattered field asymptotically, a far field expression is derived. Some illustrative numerical examples on the monostatic and bistatic radar cross section (RCS) are presented and the far field scattering characteristics are discussed.

    A rigorous radar cross section (RCS) analysis is carried out for two-dimensional rectangular and circular cavities with double-layer material loading by means of the Wiener-Hopf (WH) technique and the Riemann-Hilbert problem(RHP) technique, respectively. Both E and H polarizations are treated. The WH solution for the rectangular cavity and the RHP solution for the circular cavity involve numerical inversion of matrix equations. Since both methods take into account the edge condition explicitly, the convergence of the WH and RHP solutions is rapid and the final results are valid over a broad frequency range. Illustrative numerical examples on the monostatic and bistatic RCS are presented for various physical parameters and the far field scattering characteristics are discussed in detail. It is shown that the double-layer lossy material loading inside the cavities leads to the significant RCS reduction.

    The plane wave diffraction by a terminated semiinfinite parallel-plate waveguide with three-layer material loading is rigorously analyzed for E polarization using the Wiener-Hopf technique, Introducing the Fourier transform for the scattered field and applying boundary conditions in the transform domain, the problem is formulated in terms of the simultaneous Wiener-Hopf equations, which are solved via the factorization and decomposition procedure.     The diffraction by strips with impedance-type boundary conditions is an important subject in the radar cross section (RCS) reduction of targets. This structure serves as a suitable model of thin dielectric slabs and finite-length Coatings. In, we have analyzed the plane wave diffraction by an impedance strip using the analytical-numerical approach, where.the efficient solution has been obtained for the same surface impedances on both sides of the strip. As an important generalization to our previous analysis, we shall consider in this paper a strip with different surface impedances and analyze the E-polarized plane wave diffraction by means of the analytical-numerical approach. The time factor is assumed to be e^<-iwt> and suppressed in the following analysis.

    The diffraction of a plane electromagnetic wave by a parallel-plate waveguide cavity with a thick planar termination is rigorously analyzed for both the E and the H polarization using the Wiener-Hopf technique. Introducing the Fourier transform for the unknown scattered field and applying boundary conditions in the transform domain, the problem is formulated in terms of the simultaneous Wiener-Hopf equations, which are solved exactly in a formal sense via the factorization and decomposition procedure. Since the formal solution involves an infinite number of unknowns and branch-cut integrals with unknown integrands, approximation procedures based on rigorous asymptotics are further presented to yield the approximate solution convenient for numerical computations. The scattered field inside and outside the cavity is evaluated by taking the inverse Fourier transform and applying the saddle point method. Representative numerical examples of the monostatic and bistatic radar cross sections are presented for various physical parameters, and the scattering characteristics of the cavity are discussed in detail.

    High-frequency diffraction by a strip was previously analyzed approximately by the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction (GTD), but the GTD solution has an essential difficulty that it is valid only in the limited range of incidence and observation angles. To overcome this difficulty, in this paper, plane wave diffraction by a strip is reconsidered using the Wiener-Hopf technique and the complete high-frequency asymptotic solution is obtained, which is uniformly valid everywhere in space and has no restrictions on incidence and observation angles. Further asymptotic expansion is also carried out to derive the non-uniform asymptotic solution, which is compared with the previous GTD solution. As a result, some discrepancies are recognized.

    As a generalization of the Gamma function defined for a single complex variable, a new special function called a generalized Gamma function, defined for two complex variables and a positive integer, is introduced, and several important analytical properties are investigated in detail, which include regularity, asymptotic expansions and analytic continuations. Furthermore, as a function closely related to a generalized Gamma function, a generalized incomplete Gamma function, which is a generalization of the incomplete Gamma function, is also introduced, and some fundamental properties are investigated briefly.

    The Wiener-Hopf technique is one of the most powerful methods for analyzing the scattering and diffraction problems of electromagnetic or acoustic waves. The essential step for the solution contains the so-called factorization. This procedure needs to split certain analytic functions (kernels) into the multiplication form of two functions which have semi-infinite regions of regularity. In this paper, factorization of typical kernel functions which arise in the Wiener-Hopf equations concerned with dielectric objects, is discussed. By applying a general factorization theorem, exact integral representations of split functions are obtained and then some approximate formulas are derived via rigorous asymptotic procedure. As a result, it is pointed out that final approximate formulas are useful for high frequency range. © 1984, THE PHYSICAL SOCIETY OF JAPAN. All rights reserved.
