    Aluminum nitride (AlN) ceramics were fabricated by pressureless sintering with various sintering additives such as 5 mass % Y2O3, 2 mass % Y2O3–3 mass % Al2O3, 3 mass % Y2O3–1 mass % CaO–0.08 mass % B, and 6 mass % Y2O3–2 mass % CaO–0.16 mass % B. The relative density, phases present, lattice parameter c, and thermal conductivity of the samples were evaluated. The oxygen concentration in AlN lattice was estimated from the lattice parameter c by using the relation between the oxygen concentration and the lattice parameter c of AlN. To analyze the effects on the thermal conductivity of the samples, we plotted the oxygen concentration in AlN lattice estimated from the lattice parameters c versus the thermal resistivity, which is inverse of the thermal conductivity measured in this work. The data of the samples sintered with 5 mass % Y2O3 and 3 mass % Y2O3–1 mass % CaO–0.08 mass % B located on the plot of the relation between oxygen concentration in AlN lattice and thermal resistivity of AlN presented by Slack (Slack's line) or Harris et al. (Harris's line), respectively. In contrast, the data of the samples sintered with 2 mass % Y2O3–3 mass % Al2O3 and 6 mass % Y2O3–2 mass % CaO–0.16 mass % B, which contain excess grain boundary phases, located above the Harris's line. It was suggested that the thermal conductivity of the samples could be influenced by the density, the oxygen content in AlN lattice, and the presence of grain boundary phases.

    Solid solutions of Li-doped Mg0.857Cu2.143O3 (LixMg0.857-x Cu2.143O3-y) were prepared at 950degreesC for 12 h in air by the solid-state method using Li2CO3, MgO and CuO powders. The solid solutions were obtained as the single alpha phase with the guggenite structure in 0 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.06 region. With the increasing of the Li content x, the lattice parameters a, b and unit cell volume V decreased, while c increased. On the basis of the charge neutrality, hole carrier estimated by the oxygen content increased with the Li substitution. The Seebeck coefficient at room temperature of x = 0.03 sample was +400 muV/K. The electrical resistivity p at room temperature drastically decreased with the increasing x. Temperature dependences of p for x = 0.01, 0.03 and 0.06 samples were semi-conductive behavior from room temperature to about 12 K. Interaction between Cu2+ and Cu2+ through O2- seems to be somewhat large antiferromagnetic one. Sperconducting transition was not detected in the temperature range. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science (USA).

    Solid solutions of Mg1-xCu2+xO3 were prepared at 950 degreesC for 12 h in air with a narrow composition range of x from 0.130 to 0.166. Thermal analysis revealed that the sample of x = 0.143 decomposed into MgO and Cu2O above 1030 degreesC. The stoichiometric oxygen content based on Cu II valence was confirmed with the weight loss after decomposition in H-2:Ar (20%:80%) atmosphere. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern of the sample (x = 0.143) was analyzed by the Rietveld method. The structure is isostructural with CaCu2O3, and related to a rock-salt-type superstructure with an orthorhombic cell, a = 3.9906(1), b = 9.3482(3), and c = 3.1911 (1) Angstrom, space group Pmmn (No. 59, setting 2). There are two metal atom sites in the structure. One metal atom site (4e) occupied by Cu atoms is in an elongated octahedron of oxygen atoms. The other site (2b) is statistically occupied by Cu and Mg atoms with fractions of 0.143 and 0.857, respectively. (C) 2001 Academic Press.

    B1-type tantalum nitride (polycrystalline bulk state) was synthesized by shock compression. Shock-compression recovery experiments of the porous sample of tantalum nitride with a hexagonal structure (CoSn-type) were performed in the impact-velocity range up to 1.5 km s-1. The instrumental chemical analysis, X-ray and electron diffraction experiments were carried out on the recovered tantalum nitride sample and the combustion-synthesized B1-type sample for comparison. The recovery rate of the B1-type phase increased with increasing porosity, impact velocity and impactor thickness; among these above all the effect of porosity was most remarkable. Almost 100% recovery rate was achieved for the powder of 70% porosity impacted by a 2 mm thick tungsten plate with velocities above 1.4 km s-1. It was confirmed by chemical analysis that the nitrogen content did not change by shock compression. The chemical formulae of the shock-synthesized and combustioned-synthesized B1-type phases were estimated to be TaN0.96-0.99 and TaN1.13-1.16, 1.27-1.30, respectively. The lattice parameter of the shock-synthesized B1-type (Fm3m) phase was a0 = 0.433 63- + (1) nm. The results of X-ray and electron diffraction experiments also supported that the shock-synthesized B1-type tantalum nitride has a good stoichiometry compared with the combustion-synthesized ones.

    High temperature superconductors La2-xMxCuO4-y (M=Ba and Sr) with the K2NiF4 structure were synthesized by solid state reaction and characterized by X-ray diffraction, electron microscopy, IR measurements and thermogravimetry. Anomalous behavior of unit cell parameters was confirmed. Electron diffraction study of the orthorhombic La2CuO4 revealed weak forbidden spots for Fmmm symmetry, suggesting a space group of lower symmetry. One of three IR bands observed in La2CuO4 rapidly disappeared around x=0.1. Highest superconducting transition temperature was found to be 38.0 K in La1.85Sr0.15CuO3.96. © 1987 IOP Publishing Ltd.
