This study investigates the effect of different types of clear speech on cross-linguistic perception. In particular, it examines whether the words produced to help L2 interlocutors are perceived more easily by them than the words produced for L1 interlocutors to counteract speech babble noise. English keywords in these conditions are extracted from the LUCID corpus, and they are presented to Japanese listeners for the identification of the words in a minimal pair, in babble noise or without noise. The results demonstrate that when presented in noise, the words produced to help L2 interlocutors are generally perceived more easily by them. This suggests that speech production varies according to listeners' needs in a specific communicative situation. The strong effect of the acoustic characteristics of Japanese /b/ on the perception by Japanese L1 listeners is also discovered. Further acoustic and perceptual research is required to investigate whether a universal or specific cue-enhancement is involved in the clear speech for L2 listeners.

This study addressed the problems of our previous study [5] and investigated the perceptual effect of F0 peak-delay on L1 / L2 perception of English lexical stress. A trisyllabic English nonsense word 'ninini' /nInInI/ whose F0 was set to reach its peak around the second syllable was embedded in a frame sentence and used as the stimulus of the perceptual experiment. Native English and Japanese speakers were asked to determine lexical stress locations in the experiment. The results showed that in the perception of English lexical stress, delayed F0 peaks which were aligned with the second syllable of the stimulus words perceptually affected both Japanese and English groups, although slightly in a different manner: the Japanese group perceived the delayed F0 peaks as a cue to lexical stress in the first syllable when the peaks were aligned with, or before, the end of /n/ in the second syllable, while the English group had the boundary shifted in an earlier temporal position. It was also discovered that the Japanese group had greater sensitivity to the delayed peak positions. The difference could be attributed to the dependency upon F0 as a perceptual cue and upon its alignment position in a constant / relative timing, as well as the speech rate difference between the two languages.

This study investigates the perceived vowel quality change caused by formant undershoot, where vowels in /CVC/ environments are compared with steady-state vowels. In the perceptual experiment of this study, listeners match constant /CVC/ stimuli of /bVb/ or /dVd/ to variable /#V#/ stimuli, using a schematic grid on a PC screen. The grid represents an acoustic vowel diagram, and the subjects change the F1/F2 frequencies of /#V#/ by moving a mouse. The results of the study show that, in vowel quality perception, the performance of subjects was affected by the formant trajectory range of the /CVC/ stimuli. When the formant trajectory range was small, they selected a value between the edge and peak frequencies, while they selected a value outside the trajectory range when it was large. This demonstrated phenomenon is compatible with the results of existing vowel perception studies, although the models proposed by these studies do not account for this phenomenon.
