    This study focuses on a comparison of the future demands between life insurance and saving deposit as life security resources in four areas - health security, old-age security, care security, and death security. A Markov Chain approach is used to estimate each demand. It is found that saving deposit will be preferable to life insurance in old-age security, care security, and death security. This result shows that saving deposit as multipurpose security is preferable to life insurance as purposive security. On the other hand, life insurance is extremely competitive against saving deposit on future demand in health security. In addition, attribute-based analyses show that future preference reflects each attribute factor. It is found that life insurance will be preferable in cases of generations who have comparatively heavy responsibility for family, those who have income and personal assets enough to pay insurance premiums, and those who are regular employees.

    We focus on non-storability, a characteristic of shipping freight that leads to an enormous gap between the widely-used no-arbitrage pricing theory and shipping freight derivative markets. Our main contribution is to modify and generalize the Bessembinder and Lemmon (2002) model. Equilibrium spot and forward price formulae are derived in a shipping freight market where shipowners, charterers, and speculators are non-homogeneous. From our formulae, we also obtain the properties of the forward risk premium and an optimal hedge ratio. In addition, we use the model to quantify the risk attitude of market participants.     In the past few decades, the market environment of the liner shipping industry has changed. The most important changes are in market power and regulation, such as the Shipping Act of 1984 and the Ocean Shipping Reform Act of 1998 in the United States. We estimate and draw the time-varying systematic risk beta in the Japanese shipping industry by using Kalman filters and relate the estimated path of beta to market changes during 1980-2006. To interpret market environment in the Japanese liner shipping industry, we focus on two points. The first is that the introduction of policies for promoting competition increases beta, and the second is that an increase in market power due to cooperation and concentration among firms reduces beta. Our results support the first point and suggest that the increasing trend of beta during 1980-1990 reflects regulatory change in the liner shipping industry. On the other hand, the trends of beta during 1990-1998 are decreasing, which seems to be consistent with the second point suggesting that the market risk was alleviated with inter-firm cooperation coming into effect. After 1998 the trend flattens, which can be interpreted by offsetting the two conflicting factors stemming from the first and second points.

    In the framework of the structural approach of bond pricing, we extend the Fujita-Ishizaka model by considering more realistic payoffs. The payoff to the bondholder at time of default, provided that default occurs prior to maturity, depends on the firm value at time of default.
