This research theoretically examined how to improve the physical infrastructure and the market infrastructure, which play a key role in the sound development and growth of the globalized modern economy, focusing on the interactions between the public and private sectors.
This research focuses on the following three topics: (1) strategic analysis of competition among countries regarding export and financing of physical infrastructure, (2) dynamic analysis of institutional transition and interaction between the mode of competition and trade structure, and (3) knowledge capital-based economic growth through educational investment and R&D under an open economy. By constructing the theoretical models regarding these topics and analyzing, this research derived new theoretical insights and policy implications for infrastructure development to form a "quality market" that achieves the sound development and growth of the global economy.

The present project investigates the long-run effects of inflation on innovation, economic growth, and welfare from various viewpoints. One of the most important findings is in a paper published at European Economic Review in 2017. The paper develops a Schumpeterian growth model with endogenous entry of heterogeneous firms to analyze the effects of monetary policy on economic growth via a cash-in-advance constraint on R&D investment. It shows in the case of a positive entry cost, an increase in the nominal interest rate affects the distribution of innovations that are implemented and would have an inverted-U effect on economic growth if the entry cost is sufficiently large. We also calibrate the model to aggregate data of the US economy and find that the growth-maximizing inflation rate is about 3%, which is consistent with recent empirical estimates.

What are the macroeconomic consequences of legal protection for intellectual properties? In the case where private firms voluntarily invest in private defense of their invented intellectual properties against imitation activities in developing countries, a strengthening of legal protection of intellectual properties in a developing country may reduce the speed of innovation and the rate of economic growth in the developed economy. Specifically, there is an inverted U-shaped relationship between the legal protection and the rate of innovation, which is consistent with recent empirical evidence.

This research both theoretically and empirically examines what effects firm heterogeneity and the difference in market attributes and institutional factors have on the firm's decision of the production and export of goods and services, foreign direct investment, offshore outsourcing, R & D, and innovation. The theoretical studies present the unique dynamic general equilibrium model of innovation and the trade model of goods and services, and the statistical analysis, using the micro-level panel data, shows the empirical evidence on the relation between the firm heterogeneity, outsourcing and R & D.

This research project investigated the role of private firms' incentives to protect intellectual property protection for their inventions in R&D activity and the aggregate rate of technological progress. The major finding is that when firms have sufficiently strong incentives to protect their inventions, the aggregate rate of technological progress tends to be low. This research also shows that the rate of technological progress is maximized at a very lower level of the effectiveness of private activity for IPR protection.
