In this chapter, we reconsider the analytical results on the existence of cyclical fluctuations in continuous time dynamic optimizationmodels with two state variables and their applications to dynamic economic theory. In the first part, we survey the useful analytical results which were obtained by Dockner and Feichtinger (J Econom 53-1:31-50, 1991), Liu (J Math Anal Appl 182:250-256, 1994) and Asada and Yoshida (Chaos, Solitons and Fractals 18:525-536, 2003) on the general theory of cyclical fluctuations in continuous time dynamic optimizing and nonoptimizing models. In the second part, we provide an application of these analytical results to a particular continuous time dynamic optimizing economic model, that is, a model of dynamic limit pricing with two state variables, which is an extension of Gaskins (J Econom Theor 3:306-322, 1971) prototype model.

In this paper we present a model of flexicurity capitalism that exhibits a second labor market with the government as an employer of first resort, where all workers not employed by firms in the private sector find meaningful employment. We show that the model exhibits a unique interior steady state which is asymptotically stable under real wage adjustment dynamics of the type considered in Blanchard and Katz (1999), and under a type of Okun's Law that links the level of utilization of firms to their hiring and firing decision. The introduction of a company pension fund can be shown to contribute to the viability of the analyzed economic system. However, when credit is incorporated in the model, in place of savings-driven supply side fluctuations in economic activity, investment-driven demand side business cycle fluctuations (of a probably much more volatile type) can take place. The stability of equilibrium and the possibility of generation of business cycles in a discrete interregional Kaldorian macrodynamic model with fixed exchange rates are explored using numerical methods. One of the aims is to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the numerical approach for dynamical systems of moderately high dimensionality and several parameters. The model considered is five-dimensional with four parameters, the speeds of adjustment of the goods markets and the degrees of economic interactions between the regions through trade and capital movement. Using a grid search method for the determination of the region of stability of equilibrium in two-dimensional parameter subspaces, and coefficient criteria for the flip bifurcation - and Hopf bifurcation - curve, we determine the stability region in several parameter ranges and identify Hopf bifurcation curves when they exist. It is found that interregional cycles emerge only for sufficient interregional trade. The relevant threshold is predicted by the model at 14 - 16 % of trade transactions. By contrast, no minimum level of capital mobility exists in a global sense as a requirement for the emergence of interregional cycles; the main conclusion being, therefore, that cycles may occur for very low levels of capital mobility if trade is sufficient. Examples of bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent diagrams illustrating the occurrence of cycles or period doubling, and examples of the development of the occurring cycles, are given. Both supercritical and subcritical bifurcations are found to occur, the latter type indicating coexistence of a point and a cyclical attractor.

Complex dynamical features are explored in a discrete interregional macrodynamic model proposed by Asada et al., using numerical methods. The model is five-dimensional with four parameters. The results demonstrate patterns of dynamical behaviour, such as bifurcation processes and co-existence of attractors, generated by high-dimensional discrete systems. In three cases of two-dimensional parameter subspaces the stability of equilibrium region is determined and its boundaries, the flip and Neimark-Hopf bifurcation curves, are identified by means of necessary coefficient criteria. In the first case closed invariant curves (CICs) are found to occur through 5D-crater-type bifurcations, and for certain ranges of parameter values a stable equilibrium coexists with an unstable CIC associated with the subcritical bifurcation, as well as with an outer stable CIC. A remarkable feature of the second case is the coexistence of two attracting CICs outside the stability region. In both these cases the related hysteresis effects are illustrated by numerical simulations. In the third case a remarkable feature is the apparent unfolding of an attracting CIC before it evolves to a chaotic attractor. Examples of CICs and chaotic attractors are given in subspaces of phase space.

In the last months, the world's economies were confronted with the largest economic recession since the Great Depression. The occurrence of a worldwide financial market meltdown as a consequence originally stemming from of the crisis in the US subprime housing sector was only prevented by extraordinary monetary and fiscal policy measures implemented at the international level. Although the world economy seems now to be slowing recovering, it is worthwhile exploring the fragility and potentially destabilizing feedbacks of advanced macroeconomies in the context of Keynesian macro models. Fragilities and destabilizing feedback mechanisms are known to be potential features of all markets-the product markets, the labor market, and the financial markets. In this paper we focus in particular on the financial market. We use a Tobin-like macroeconomic portfolio approach, and the interaction of heterogeneous agents on the financial market to characterize the potential instability of the financial markets. Though the study of the latter has been undertaken in many partial models, we focus here on the interconnectedness of all three markets. Furthermore, we also study how labor market, fiscal and monetary policies can stabilize unstable macroeconomies. Besides other stabilizing policies we in particular propose a countercyclical monetary policy that sells assets in the boom and purchases assets in recessions. Modern stability analysis is brought to bear to demonstrate the stabilizing effects of those suggested policies.

We present a discrete two-regional Kaldorian macrodynamic model with flexible exchange rates and explore numerically the stability of equilibrium and the possibility of generation of business cycles. We use a grid search method in two-dimensional parameter subspaces, and coefficient criteria for the flip and Hopf bifurcation curves, to determine the stability region and its boundary curves in several parameter ranges. The model is characterized by enhanced stability of equilibrium, while its predominant asymptotic behavior when equilibrium is unstable is period doubling. Cycles are scarce and short-lived in parameter space, occurring at large values of the degree of capital movement beta. By contrast to the corresponding fixed exchange rates system, for cycles to occur sufficient amount of trade is required together with high levels of capital movement. Rapid changes in exchange rate expectations and decreased government expenditure are factors contributing to the creation of interregional cycles. Examples of bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent diagrams illustrating period doubling or cycles, and their development into chaotic attractors, are given. The paper illustrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the numerical approach for dynamical systems of moderately high dimensionality and several parameters.

We explore numerically a three-dimensional discrete-time Kaldorian macrodynamic model in an open economy with fixed exchange rates, focusing on the effects of variation of the model parameters, the speed of adjustment of the goods market a, and the degree of capital mobility beta on the stability of equilibrium and on the existence of business cycles. We determine the stability region in the parameter space and find that increase of a destabilizes the equilibrium more quickly than increase of beta. We determine the Hopf-Neimark bifurcation curve along which business cycles are generated, and discuss briefly the occurrence of Arnold tongues. Bifurcation and Lyapunov exponent diagrams are computed providing information on the emergence, persistence, and amplitude of the cycles and illustrating the complex dynamics involved. Examples of cycles and other attractors are presented. Finally, we discuss a two-dimensional variation of the model related to a "wealth effect," called model 2, and show that in this case, a does not destabilize the equilibrium more quickly than beta, and that a Hopf-Neimark bifurcation curve does not exist in the parameter space, therefore model 2 does not produce cycles.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of price flexibility on macroeconomic instability using as our analytical framework a macrodynamic model with a Fisher debt effect. We introduce the expectations-augmented Phillips curve and the adaptive expectations hypothesis into a macrodynamic model with a Fisher debt effect, as developed by Asada (2001). We demonstrate analytically that both of the increase of the speed of price adjustments and the increase of the speed of expectations adaptation contribute to destabilizing rather than stabilizing the economy, and we also show that at the intermediate ranges of the parameter values, cyclical fluctuations occur by means of the Hopf bifurcation theorem. We also present some numerical examples which support our analytical results.

In this paper, we investigate a nonlinear macrodynamic model of business cycles which describes the dynamic interaction of two regions which are connected through inter-regional trade and inter-regional capital movement with fixed exchange rates. Our model is formulated as a five-dimensional system of nonlinear differential equations, which is a two-regional extension of the Kaldorian business cycle model. We study the local stability/instability and the condition for the existence of the cyclical fluctuation analytically, and we also present some numerical examples which support our analytical results. © 2004, JAPAN SECTION OF THE REGIONAL SCIENCE ASSOCIATION INTERNATIONAL. In this paper, we study the economic implications of the trade off between growth and environment in the context of dynamic models of capital accumulation. The collective solution is formulated in terms of dynamic optimization of the central planner, and the decentralized solution is formulated in terms of differential game between workers and capitalists. We compare the economic properties of two solutions.

We construct simple macrodynamic models with policy lag by means of mixed difference and differential equations, and study how lags in policy response affect the macroeconomic (in)stability. Local dynamics of the prototype model are studied analytically, and the global dynamics of the prototype and the extended models are studied by means of numerical simulations. We show that the government can stabilize the intrinsically unstable economy if the policy lag is sufficiently short, but the system becomes locally unstable when the policy lag is too long. We also show the existence of cycles and complex behavior in some range of the policy lag.

In this paper, we formulate a discrete time version of the Kaldorian macrodynamic model in a small open economy with fixed exchange rates. The model is described by a system of the three-dimensional nonlinear difference equations with and without stochastic disturbances (noise effects). We study the local stability/instability properties analytically by using the linear approximation method, and chaotic dynamics with and without noise effects are investigated by means of numerical simulations, In general, it is believed that the effect of the noise is to obscure the basic structure of the system. But, this is not necessarily the case. We show by means of numerical analysis that the noise can reveal the hidden structure of the model contrary to the usual intuition in some situations.

In this paper, we investigate by means of analytical method and numerical simulations the properties of three-dimensional business cycle model, in which foreign exchange rate is flexible and a parameter is fluctuated by noise. The model is a discrete time version of Asada (Journal of Economics, 62, 239-269, 1995)'s continuous time open economy model without noise. We show (1) noise may suppress the burst of flexible foreign exchange rate when its behavior begins to burst as a bifurcation parameter (adjustment speed of the goods market) is increased, (2) the windows of cycles can be broken by noise, and (3) noise may reveal the hidden structures.

In this paper, we reconsider the theory of investment and finance with imperfect capital market from an analytical point of view. First, we present a simplified static model which integrates Keynes' approach to investment determination and Kalecki's approach to the "principle of increasing risk", and investigate the relationships between this model and Tobin's q theory. The second part of this paper tries to extend the basic model to the model of investment and finance in a truly dynamic environment by utilizing the analytical framework which was presented by Asada and Semmler [2].

This paper shows that the Romer (1990) Journal of Political Economy, 98, 71-102 model of endogenous growth, its version for the social planning problem, has a unique steady state and is saddle path stable. The steady state can be monotonically reached by an appropriate choice of the initial values of the control variables if the initial values of the state variables lie in the vicinity of the steady state. For the original version, as well as for generalizations of it, we demonstrate that Hopf bifurcation can be excluded. We also demonstrate that the market variant of the Romer model as, for example, presented in Benhabib, Peru and Xie (1994) Ricerche Economiche, 48, 279-298, does admit Hopf bifurcation and stable periodic solutions. The technique employed here may be useful in studying other variants of endogenous growth models. © 1998 Academic Press Limited.

In this paper, we formulate a Kaldorian business-cycle model in a small open economy. We consider the possibility of capital mobility, and both the system of fixed exchange rates and that of flexible exchange rates are studied. We investigate how changes of the parameter which represents the ''degree of capital mobility'' affect the dynamic characteristics of the model. Some numerical simulations are performed based on the analytical model.

Frequently, intertemporal models, for example, Uzawa's (1969) work on growth, are based on the separation of investment and the financing decisions of firms. Finance variables are disregarded. In contrast, along the lines of the theory of imperfect capital markets, the present paper allows for cross-effects between firms' financial structure and the value of firms. A steady-state analysis gives empirical predictions on the relation of investment, finance and debt, and Hopf-Bifurcation analysis establishes the possibility of cyclical paths. © 1995.

The paper puts forward a dynamic IS-LM model in four state variables representing real balances, inflation, income distribution, and a so-called state of confidence. Local (in)stability is characterized by (high) low interest elasticities of money demand. Also a Hopf bifurcation can be shown to exist. Freezing inflation and distribution makes a mathematical analysis of the main stability mechanisms in the outer regions possible. The global dynamics of the full system is studied by means of numerical simulations. It gives rise to unique and stable limit cycles. Lastly, a sensitivity analysis inquires into the impact of parameter changes on the main cycle features. © 1994.

    Language:English   Publisher:Springer Singapore

This book reflects the state of the art in nonlinear economic dynamics, providing a broad overview of dynamic economic models at different levels. The wide variety of approaches ranges from theoretical and simulation analysis to methodological study. In particular, it examines the local and global asymptotical behavior of both macro- and micro- level mathematical models, theoretically as well as using simulation. It also focuses on systems with one or more time delays for which new methodology has to be developed to investigate their asymptotic properties. The book offers a comprehensive summary of the existing methodology with extensions to the more complex model variants, since considerations on bounded rationality of complex economic behavior provide the foundation underlying choice-theoretic and policy-oriented studies of macro behavior, which impact the real macro economy. It includes 13 chapters addressing traditional models such as monopoly, duopoly and oligopoly in microeconomics and Keynesian, Goodwinian, and Kaldor-Kaleckian models in macroeconomics. Each chapter presents new aspects of these traditional models that have never been seen before. This work renews the past wisdom and reveals tomorrow’s knowledge.

Th study squad of Theory of the Financial Dynamics (K.Watanabe, T.Asada, R.Kuroki) built a financial dynamic model to include inflation rate, an exchange rate and analyzed the policy effects using comparison dynamics analysis and calibration. The study squad of Historic Proof Analysis of the Financial System(M.Ishikura, Y.Watanabe, Y.Noshita) analyzed the causes and effects of the financial panic that happened in the United States in 2007 and enlarged worldwide by the method of the historic proof analysis and examined possibility of the rebuilding of the international monetary system. The study squad of Theory of the Monetary Policy and the Income Distribution(T.Yagi, Y.Yamada, M.Kasamatsu) examined a wage-profit relation in Sraffa's model and tried to develop Sraffa's model. Moreover, it examined the handling of value-added production of banks in the SNA system and considered how banks had been adopted form a point of view of input-output relation..
We received the scientific research funds arts and science books furtherance in 2011, and the results of our research are settled in Monetary Policy and Income distribution(Nihonkeizai hyoronsha, 2011).

The study constrocts multi-dimensional nonlinear dynamic economic models that are useful for considering the long-run dynamic phenomenon observed in not only economics but also other areas such as ecology, biology, global warming, etc.
This study has three parts. The first part investigates an economic implication of chaotic fluctuations that are observed in a nonlinear economic dynamic model. To this end, it constructs a nonlinear discrete time Cournot duopoly model in which firms have U-shaped or inverted U-shaped reaction functions due to production externality and shows that chaotic output fluctuations can arise for strong nonlinearities. Two main results are the following: (1) it is theoretically as well as numerically confirmed that one of the duopolists can benefit in the sense that the long-run average profit taken along a chaotic trajectory is higher than the profit taken at an equilibrium point, while the rival is disadvantaged if both duopolists are homogeneous; (2) is it verified with numerical simulations that both duopolists can benefit from chaotic trajectories if they are heterogeneous.
The second part of this study focuses on the stable fixed point and derives the particular analytic solutions, as well as general solutions of the Cournot adjustment process of output. Since there are, in general, difficulties in finding analytical solutions in a discrete time system, it is worthwhile to present the existence conditions for analytical solutions.
The last part constructs a two (agricultural and manufactured) sector general equilibrium model and studies the dynamic path of the economy and the global temperatures. It is numerically demonstrated that the dynamic interaction between the stable climate system and the stable market adjustment process can generate various dynamics ranging from periodic cycle to chaotic fluctuations

    (1) One Dimensional Models
Chaos occurs in a nonlinear cobweb model with normal demand and supply, naive expectations and adaptive production adjustment. We demonstrates the possibility that chaotic fluctuations may be preferable to a steady state for a simple macro disequilibrium model in which inventory can be chaotically fluctuated.
    (2) High Dimensional Models
We investigate the global dynamics of two-dimensional Diamond-type overlapping generations model extended to allow for government intervention. We identify conditions under which transverse homoclinic points to the golden rule steady state are generated. We examine by mean of analytical method and numerical simulations the properties of three-dimensional Kaldor-type business cycle models in which a parameter is fluctuated by noise. It is shown that noise may not obscure the underling structures, but also reveal the hidden structures.
    (3) New Numerical Approximation Schemes
Composition methods for autonomous stochastic differential equations (SDEs) are formulated to produce numerical approximation schemes for the equations. The new schemes are advantageous to preserve the special character of SDEs numerically and are useful for approximations of the solutions to stochastic nonlinear equations
    (4) Alternative Approaches and Models
We investigate various alternative approaches and models. For example, percolation theory is employed to model stock price fluctuations.
